General Physician,
WAY OF COOKING LINKED TO CANCER-ARE YOU AWARE?

Deep frying, burning or charring foods may produce cancers

Regularly eating burned or charred red meat, similar to that cooked on a grill can increase the chances of pancreatic cancer by 60%, said Padma Shri, Dr. B C Roy National Awardee & DST National Science Communication Awardee, Dr K K Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India and Honorary Secretary General IMA.

Turning down the heat when grilling, frying, and barbecuing to avoid excess burning or charring of the meat may be a sensible way for some people to lower their risk for getting pancreatic cancer.

As per Dr Kristin Anderson of the University of Minnesota, charred meat contains several known cancer-causing chemicals, including heterocyclic amines.

Heterocyclic amines (HAs) are carcinogens produced by cooking meat and animal protein at high temperatures; metabolism of HA is influenced by polymorphisms in the N-acetyltransferase-2 (NAT-2) gene. Data from a variety of sources suggest that HA may play a role in human carcinogenesis and are liked to many cancers.

Anderson's team started with 62,000 healthy people and documented what they actually did eat. Over nine years, 208 were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. When divided into five groups based on how much charred meat such as hamburgers they ate, the people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer were far more likely to be in the top two groups.

They found that those who preferred very well-done steak were almost 60 percent more likely to get pancreatic cancer as those who ate steak less well-done or did not eat steak. Those with the highest intake of very well-done meat had a 70 percent higher risk for pancreatic cancer over those with the lowest consumption.

The mutagenic activity and the mass amount of heterocyclic amines responsible for the mutagenic activity have been measured in some cooked foods. Cooked meats are the predominant source of mutagenic activity in the diet with values ranging from 0 to 10,000 revertants per gram reported in the Ames/Salmonella test with strain TA98.

Frying at higher temperatures and for longer times produces the greatest mutagenic response, and thus concomitantly, the largest amounts of heterocyclic amines.

Non-meat products such as baked breads can also form significant mutagenic activity, particularly when overcooked. Commercially prepared hamburgers made from meat substitutes such as tofu, wheat gluten or tempeh and fried at 210 degrees C have up to 10% of the mutagenic activity of a fried beef patty cooked under the same conditions.

Our food grains such as wheat and rice the vegetables and fruits and even meat are found to contain varying amounts of pesticides residues. State the reason to explain how and why it happens?

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye. Most often the reason for it is the increasing demand of all foods. Secondly, want to get fruits and vegetables that are not even local or seasonal. So, to make foods available you need to ripen them before season and also increase their shelf life as they are travelling a great distance to reach you. The best way is to eat local and seasonal foods so as to avoid the hormones and pesticides added.

Hi welcome - if banana or banana shake is always high calorie foods, if you are working out daily or doing some hard work then it s definitely helpful provided after or with foods preferably one in morning & mid afternoon or midmorning max two times. This is really high calorie foods but you make you entire day all meals balanced with high protien. Do not depend or focused only banana shake. Make complete high protien diet in a very well planned way.

Hello, When you regularly eat more calories than you consume, you are likely to gain weight specially around the belly . Avoid fast food, fried food, cake, candy, soda, juices, cookies and frozen foods that are high in fat and calories. Do sprinting as fast as you possibly can for 30 seconds, followed by two minutes of walking at your normal pace. “Repeat this for 15 – 20 minutes, combined with healthy eating. Don't skip breakfast. Have 5 small meals and eat lots of freash fruit ( specially citrus ones) and veggies. Snack on nuts, fruits, boiled potatoes.

How to make body without using supplements. Suggest me some diet.

Advanced Aesthetics
Ayurveda,
How to make body without using supplements. Suggest me some diet.
Eat right. Ensuring that you're getting all the vitamins and minerals your body requires will help you grow to your full height. Take a supplement targeted at your age group with breakfast each morning, and try to incorporate certain foods into your diet. Here are some specific suggestions: ? Make sure to take in an abundance of carbohydrates and calories for that is where the body gains its energy to grow. ? Get plenty of calcium (found in dairy products and green vegetables). Calcium promotes bone growth, and can help prevent osteoporosis. ? Taking 500 mg of niacin has shown to significantly increase growth hormone levels only when taken on an empty stomach. ? Get sufficient vitamin D (which can be obtained through eating fish, alfalfa, or mushrooms, or spending enough time in the sun). Vitamin D promotes bone and muscle growth in children[, and a deficiency has been shown to stunt growth and cause weight gain in teenage girls. If you don't like fish, consider a purified fish oil supplement (purifying removes mercury). ? Take in lots of protein (from meat, eggs, tofu or legumes). Proteins provide an essential building block your body needs in order to grow. At least one (preferably two) of your meals each day should include a high quality protein. ? Up your zinc intake (oysters, chocolate, peanuts, eggs, peas, asparagus and supplements). A zinc deficiency can cause stunted growth in children . The best way to make sure you meet your body's daily need is by taking a vitamin or supplement that includes zinc. ? Eat on a regular schedule. You should be eating 3 meals a day, with small snacks between breakfast and lunch, and lunch and dinner. Try to schedule these events at roughly the same time each day.

Hello lybrate user, there can be many reasons to it. E. G. You may be spending a lot of time in travelling to office changing modes of transportation e. G bus, rickshaw, taxi and so on. Secondly it may also be due to mental exertion which people experience in office due to work and spend time overthinking. When you overthink your body uses up glucose and this drains the body of the energy. You may replace it temporarily with some sweets and fast food, but still your mind has got into the habit of overthinking and that will not stop. Hence stop overthinking. Relax. Try not to run your imagination. This will help in long run. Or else consult any psychologist for further help.

Dieting Vs Fad Dieting: How can you spot the FAD?

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Dieting Vs Fad Dieting: How can you spot the FAD?

Dieting vs Fad Dieting: How can you spot the Fad?

When it comes to health foods, the craze these days are the low-fat foods or the diet foods - This craze is more of a fad. A fad that unfortunately, most of us are following. However, it is important that we understand that if the goal is to lose weight or stay fit - 'fat-free' isn't a magic wand! The health food market is full of a variety of restricted fat versions of foods. There is a variety of 'fat-free', 'low-fat', 'light' and 'reduced-fat' products available.

Let's understand what these terms actually mean.
'Fat-free' foods have less than 0.5 grams of fat per serving.
'Low-fat' foods have 3 grams of fat or less per serving.
'Reduced-fat' foods have at least 25% less fat than regular versions of those foods.
'Light' foods have either 1/3 fewer calories or 50% less fat.

The real issue with the 'actual' fat-free foods is that they are tasteless. To make up for that, food industries pour ingredients which enhance the flavor - especially sugar, refined flour, thickeners, salt and other additives. That actually adds calories, chemicals, and stabilizers which make the food ironically much less healthy than its 'with fat' version!
If the foods are not very appealing, they are less satisfying. However, if it comes as a healthy version, you can eat it guilt free and maybe eat a lot more of it.

The right thought is to think good fat, not fat-free! Follow these rules for the right fat intake.

- When it comes to health, the type of fat you eat is more important than the amount of fat you eat. It is recommended to keep the amount of fat in your diet down to about 30% of the total calorie intake.
- Don't include saturated fats, which are found in animal products (beef, pork, butter, and other full-fat dairy products), or artificial trans fats, found in partially hydrogenated oils, Dalda or vanaspati.
- Choose lean cuts of meat and fish, and low-fat dairy products, and eliminate trans fats from your diet as much as possible.
- Chose pure ghee, nuts, dairy, fatty fish, fruits like avocado or jackfruit in your diet.
- Avoid packeted, convenience and processed foods.

Tips for buying fat-free foods

You do not have to completely miss total miss the fat-free foods, but pick them with the right knowledge! Here are the guidelines for the same:

- Read the food labels: Before buying a fat-free food, make sure the product isn't loaded with sugar or additives, and that it's actually lower in calories than the regular version. Also, check the serving size.

- Watch your servings: Sometimes it's better to eat one serving of more satisfying whole-fat food and avoid the extra calories and sugar in the low-fat version. So, having a few pieces of regular fried chips is way better than indulging in a bag full of the so-called baked chips.

- Eat more vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains: These give you nutrients and fiber to keep you feeling full for longer, and they typically have fewer calories. They're also naturally low in fat. Eg: A baked potato is a better choice than 'baked' potato chips. The whole potato has more nutrients, more fiber, and fewer calories. Wheat cracks or daliya, vegetables, and fruit also have soluble fiber, which helps the body lower blood cholesterol. Your diet should have variety and be based on whole foods.

Alcohal and beer is not the solution to gain weight. You did not mentioned about your height. You may take Alfa Tonic thrice a day for one month. Add 40 gram butter with sugar( paste) in your meal daily. One glass daily banana shake in the morning for one month. Grapes juice you can take daily. Two figs soaked and black raisons soaked you may take. Consult privately for further course of action. You should do hard work in gym.

How can I gain my weight without any side effect naturally at home.

Diploma in Diabetology, Master of Hospital Administration, MBBS
General Physician,
How can I gain my weight without any side effect naturally at home.
Our weight should be proportionate to our height. For every given height there is a normal weight range. You must do several things correctly to gain weight. A healthy diet: this is the foundation of gaining weight. If you don't do this right, the other things you do won't be effective and could even be harmful. Follow the following tips:- · Pay attention to your health and food intake. · To increase your appetite, have a glass of lime water or 1 cardamom (elaichi) before your meal. · Have minimum 4 meals in a day. · Drink 1 glass of milk twice a day. · Try to enjoy your meals and gradually increase the quantity you eat every time. · A balance diet should have all essential nutrients in it. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It should include combination of Both Carbohydrates and Proteins for e.g. Oats with Milk or Poha/ Upma with a glass of milk. If you do not like milk have 1-2 egg whites in the morning along with your breakfast. · You need to focus on your protein intake : Increase your protein intake e.g. milk, dairy products- cheese, paneer, lentils (dals), nuts ( soya, peanuts, dry fruits ), pulses e.g. rajma, chole, kidney beans etc. sprouts. If you are a non-vegetarian, then you can have proteins by also eating eggs, chicken, fish. Make sure you are including at least 2 serving of any of these in your daily meal. · Lunch and dinner again should be a combination of Proteins, Carbohydrates and Fats which could have dal, roti, sabji/chicken, salad. · Please do have minimum 4 almonds or a small bowl of peanuts every day. · Please ensure that you drink at least 3 litres of water every day.
