Hello everyone!

My name is Amreen Sheikh. I’m a clinical nutritionist practicing since 8 years in Goregaon and Andheri. I consult people suffering from diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and weight gain, weight loss and many other medical conditions. Today I will be talking about a pH balance for healthy body. Now firstly we need to understand what is pH? pH is basically a power of hydrogen ions which range between 1 to 14 and if it is less than 7 it is known as acidic if more than 7 is known as alkaline or basic. Now normally a blood pH is in range of 7.3 to 7.4.and which is slightly alkaline in nature and we need to maintain it for a healthy body. Now whenever we consume food or beverages the foods get break down into nutrients and after digestion it is then absorb in the body. Now what happens, whenever after digestion and metabolism takes place the acid or toxins which is remain in the blood is known as acidic or it depends upon whatever you eat. It is alkaline or acid forming food. Now this pH balance is maintain by process of excretion via a urine, stools or perspiration. Now we need to understand why our body and how a body can become acidic. See whenever we consume more amount of sugars or carbohydrates rich food like fruit juices, beverages and cold drinks and even wheat, rice, maida products and non-veg, these are the foods which have the tendency to produce acidin our body. Whenever we consume a large quantity of this kind of foods our body tends to produce more acid which remains in the blood system and if you consume it more frequently than the extra toxic or acid which is there in the blood it goes towards fats and it deposit there. And that’s why people trying to lose weight find it difficult to lose weight after so many efforts of physical activity and dieting as well. Not only for weight gain it also effect other body system like blood circulation becomes difficult and respiration, that’s why we get patients having more prone of diseases like breathing difficulty, lungs problem and COPD and hormonal imbalance, headache and immune system like viral infections. These are all because of nowadays our body is becoming more acidic. Now how we can prevent this problem? First we need to make a target of adding more alkaline food in our diet i.e. at least 70% of our diet should consist of alkaline foods i.e. fresh fruits, fresh vegetables in the form of salads fruits, vegetable sources of protein like soya beans, sprouts, daal legumes and many other protein rich foods which is vegetable sources. And always you can keep moderation of acid consuming foods like wheat-rice and fruit juices and other carbohydrates which you can add in moderation. Always keep a target of three liters of water or more than that to detox your body which will helpful for losing weight in a faster way.

Furthermore, diet-related query you can contact me through Lybrate.com or for booking an appointment, for online consultation or for visiting my clinic you can go through a Lybrate app and then you can become an appointment with me.

Don't Go With A Crowd - Time To Opt For A DNA Based Diet Plan

Don't Go With A Crowd - Time To Opt For A DNA Based Diet Plan

Isn’t it frustrating when you and a friend decide to follow a diet plan and exercise regimen only to see that you don’t lose as much weight as your friend? This is most probably due to you and your friend’s different DNA structure. Just as people put on weight in different ways, people also lose weight in different ways. Your DNA not only determines our height and the color of your eyes, but also the diet and workouts/sports best suited to you. Your DNA can also guide you to know your risk score toward lifestyle diseases such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease

Our unique DNA structure determines how your body processes carbohydrates, protein and fats and what types of food your body can metabolize easily. Thus, some people can enjoy cheesy pastas without it affecting their weight while others need to avoid it completely.

Unlike generic diets that typically have a 50-50 percent chance of success, a DNA based diet is customized to your body’s requirements and can help you, lose weight/fat, correct your blood parameters, and make your fitter and healthy. In a study involving over 150 obese people, following a diet plan customized to the individual’s DNA structure saw the participants lose 33% more weight than by calorie counting. This type of diet also reduced their BMI and increased their muscle mass.

Getting started with this diet is easy. 98400

  1. The first step is to send your saliva sample to a lab for testing. The results of this test can be broadly categorized as what kind of food; exercise regime is best suited to you. What kind of lifestyle disorders you are genetically at a risk.
  2. If your genes say that your body metabolizes carbohydrates easily, skipping out on carbs could drain you of energy. On the other hand, if your sensitivity to saturated fat is high, you will need to restrict your consumption of saturated fats.
  3. When speaking of exercise regimens, your genes determine whether it is better for you to practice short, high-intensity workouts or to practice low-intensity workouts for a longer duration. This can help you create the optimum workout schedule for yourself.
  4. Your health panel suggests which lifestyle diseases you need to be watchful about.

So, don’t give up on losing weight, or correcting your blood parameters, or building your fitness level, just yet. Listen to what your genes are telling you and find an easy way to fit into your old jeans. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

5 Things You Must Consume After Indulging In Junk Food!

5 Things You Must Consume After Indulging In Junk Food!

As an old saying goes, all the tasty things are unhealthy, everyone knows that burgers, pizzas, fries, etc are not very healthy for us, still, these are things we treat ourselves to on weekends and holidays. Junk food not only has a high calorific value, it also exposes the body to preservatives, artificial flavors, bad cholesterol and refined carbs. But, do you know that eating smart after binging on junk food can help reduce the harmful effect of these foods. Here are a few tips.

  1. Drink plenty of water: Junk food has high sodium content. This can leave the body feeling dehydrated and create an electrolyte imbalance. As a result, your body retains water and you begin to feel bloated. At this point, water is your best friend. It can help flush toxins from your body and hydrate it. To go one step further, try drinking warm water through the day. If you like, you can also infuse water with slices of freshly cut fruits or herbs.
  2. Make your diet fiber heavy: Junk food is always tempting and the one way to keep yourself from giving in to such temptation is to keep yourself feeling satiated. Increasing the amount of fiber in your diet can keep you satiated for longer and prevent snacking between meals. Fiber also helps improve digestion and helps the body expel junk food faster. To increase the amount of fiber in your food, pile on fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains.
  3. Include lean proteins: Proteins can also help relieve hunger pangs. However, not all forms of protein are good for the body after binging on junk food. Avoid fatty proteins like dairy products made from whole milk and red meat and instead focus on lean proteins like fish and chicken. These proteins are also easily digestible. Fish is also rich in omega 3 fatty acids that help reduce inflammation caused by additives in junk food.
  4. Flavor your food with gingerGinger can help reduce inflammation caused by junk food and ease the digestive system. Drinking a cup of ginger tea or grating ginger over a salad or fruits can help lower triglyceride levels and aid in the liver’s recovery. Additionally, ginger is also beneficial in blood pressure regulation and improving cardio vascular health.
  5. Sip some green tea: One of the reasons junk food is said to be bad for you is because of its high-calorie count. This can cause weight gain and undo your efforts to stay fit. Green tea has antioxidant properties that can negate some of the ill effects of junk food. It also helps lower bad cholesterol levels.

Replace Tomato Ketchup With Home-Made Tomato Chutney

P.G. Diploma In Dietitics & Nutrition, BSC - Zoology

Replace Tomato Ketchup With Home-Made Tomato Chutney

The problem with the commercialized ketchup available in all markets is that even though they may be addictive, they often contain high-fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, brown rice syrup, cane crystals and tomato concentrates in place of naturally produced tomatoes. As a result, they bring about a host of health problems which propels one to prepare home-made tomato chutney easily with a handful of ingredients.

The simple home-made tomato chutney can also be consumed as ketchup, and it is quite easy to prepare as well. A different recipe that needs garlic, ginger along with some dry red chilies or chili flakes, the recipe is healthy as well. The red chilies add a gentle touch of hotness as well as smokiness which you will feel while cooking. The chutney can be a good option to be used as an accompaniment with snacks or other foods.

Ingredients For The Homemade Tomato Chutney
For making around 2.5 kg of tomato chutney, you will require the same amount of tomatoes, around 5 grams of garlic, a quarter inch ginger and 5 to 7 dry red chilies which should be deseeded and halved. You may also add half-a-cup of raisins, half cup of apple cider vinegar, one tablespoon of rock salt, about a quarter teaspoon of sodium benzoate dissolved in warm water. The sodium benzoate acts as a preservative so that the shelf life of the product is more. You should try to replace sugar with the natural element stevia which is not just super sweet but has no calories with a zero-glycemic index. It is a great sweetener and is available in the woods of Brazil and Paraguay. You will be surprised to know that the leaves of this plant are about 300 times sweeter than sugar. It would stay good for 6 months, but the taste would be so amazing that you will end up finishing it sooner.

Procedure To Make The Chutney
Rinse the tomatoes and raisins well in water and chop the tomatoes in roughly sliced pieces. Now peel the ginger, garlic and chop them. You will have to cut the chilies in halves and deseed them. Take all the chopped tomatoes in a 5-litre pressure cooker and add garlic, ginger, red chilies, vinegar, raisins, salt, and sugar or stevia. Keep the flame low and start mixing them and as the tomatoes start to soften, you should switch off the gas. Allow the mixture to cool down and blend it well into a smooth puree. Strain the mixture into a large saucepan or pot. Your last step is to stir and dissolve the sodium benzoate in a cup of hot water and add it directly to your chutney. The home-made tomato chutney is ready to be served. Refrigerate it after use. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Weight Loss: Why Exercise Is A False Promise?

Weight Loss: Why Exercise Is A False Promise?

If only losing weight was as easy as gaining it, people would have been a lot happier in their lives. Maintaining a healthy body weight has become very important. In addition to the physical discomfort, being obese or overweight can invite innumerable health complications. From diabetes to cardiac problems, menstrual problems to reproductive disorders, the list is endless. Unhealthy lifestyle habits and practices make things even worse. As per a survey, obesity is on a mercurial rise, wreaking havoc like never before. The condition is particularly affecting children and teenagers. It can often be really painful to see them suffer so much because of obesity.

Since time immemorial, we were made to believe that physical activities such as exercise and gymming play a pivotal role, assisting millions of people to lose weight effectively. Nobody ever felt the need to challenge the credibility of this fact. We were too happy to follow the belief blindly. The hardcore fitness freaks swear by the health benefits of exercises and gymming. Now here comes a shocker, recent studies suggest that exercise or gymming does little to help you shed the extra pounds. Yes, you heard it right! Research in the UK and USA have come up with this shocking fact that is sure to break many hearts.

There is no denying the fact that exercise and gymming is a healthy practice. People with cardiac problems, dementia, anxiety, to name a few, definitely benefit from exercises. It has made pregnancy a lot easier for many pregnant women. However, when it comes to weight loss, the contribution is almost negligible. Many people have the misconception that obesity is mainly due to lack of physical activity and exercise. If that was the case then physically fit people would never put on any weight, which is not always the case. Obesity can be an indication and an outcome of some serious health complications, such as PCOS (PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome), hypothyroidism, cushing's syndrome, to name a few. In such cases, exercise may help to lose some weight, but only when supplemented along with proper medications and treatment.

Many health and fitness institutes and organizations guarantee 100% success and fruitful results for people dealing with obesity. It would be extremely foolish on your part to buy their words without getting yourself medically examined. A timely diagnosis and treatment will automatically be helpful to deal with the situation better. Gymming or exercise helps to lose weight when amalgamated with a proper diet and healthy lifestyle practices. A strong determination and willpower are equally important for weight loss.

Losing weight may be difficult, but not impossible. Have patience, lead a healthy life, eat a healthy and balanced diet. Exercise, but do not depend on it to work miracles for you.
