Detox Your Body and Be One With Your Spiritual Self

MD
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Delhi
Detox Your Body and Be One With Your Spiritual Self

Fasting not only aids religious beliefs, but also has many spiritual benefits. It is considered the best way to re-energize one's mind, body and soul. It is one of the best ways to detoxify one's digestive system and immune system. One's stomach and pancreas are always in a state of action and hence a few days' rest can actually retune both the systems. Fasting also provides one with the opportunity to reconnect with one's spiritual body. It is a journey of self-discovery. Activities like praying and meditating helps people to connect more with their spiritual self.

How can you detox your body?
Although fasting is one of the best ways to detox one's body, not everyone has the physical strength to perform it. Detoxing can also be performed by having detoxifying foods.

  1. Fruits help in washing out toxins from the body. Green foods like barley, wheatgrass, spinach, alfalfa helps to give a chlorophyll boost to the digestive system. Broccoli sprouts are very high in antioxidants and its ability to stimulate detoxifying enzymes in the digestive system is unparalleled. They are more effective than any fully grown vegetable.
  2. Green tea is full of antioxidants and washes away impurities and toxic substances. It also contains catechins, which increase the function of liver. Vegetables like onions, cabbage, carrots, cauliflowers, turmeric and garlic are best eaten juiced or raw which will help in purging away toxins from the liver thus aiding the cleansing process.
  3. Omega-3 oils like hemp, olive oil, avocado oil help in detoxing. They lubricate the intestinal walls and thus allow the toxins to be absorbed by the oil and wash them away.
  4. Fasting is often aided by meditation, which helps to establish a deeper connection with oneself through faith. While meditating, make sure that you are neat and clean. Clean the environment in which you are fasting. Try to spend a minimum to 10-15 minutes remembering the name of the Supreme and chant his name or mantra. Light a candle to burn your ego and feed animals, birds around you. One should speak in limited amounts during meditation. After you break your fast, you will experience a sense of gratitude towards the food you eat.

My father have diabetes. This is very old I'll by10 years by suffering from diabetes. What should I do?
I recommend to control your sugar level 1) a healthy and well balanced diet having regular meals. Divide your meals into 5 to 6 times. 2) one teaspoon of methi seeds soaked overnight in 100 ml of water is very effective in controlling diabetes 3) good fats such as omega-3 and monounsaturated fats (mufa) should be consumed as they are good for the body. 4) diet should be high in fiber. Let whole grain cereals & flour, salad vegetables, green leafy vegetables & fruits be an integral part of your meals.

I have dust allergies soon I will be sick and getting a running nose.
Potatoes are crammed with carbohydrates. All forms of this stuffy food have major impact on weight gain. You can grill or bake potatoes with butter. People who eat potato chips and French fries tend to gain weight faster. Make French fries using extra virgin oil, if you like them. •Moreover, you can also make a delicious potato salad. Peel and slice potato. Boil them and mix them with the high calorie ingredients like buttermilk, mayonnaise, and veggies. Note – If you eat French fries regularly, limit your potato consumption to twice a week. If you have any medical disease that needs to be treated. Find a great personal trainer and yoga instructor to keep you consistent. Take Five phos - 4 tablets twice daily.

There are many reasons for being underweight. Very active, tense, nervous, irregular eating habits, some psychological factors may cause a person to eat less. Take 500 calorie more than what you are taking daily. Take more cereals, pulses, potatoes, sugar, creamed milk, fruits, dry-fruits. Also do some exercises that will help you by stimulating your appetite to improve the intake of calories. It also helps in improving muscle tone specially of the digestive system, resulting in better absorption and assimilation of the food, which helps tremendously in weight gain.

Lybrate-user, if hypothyroidism is not well controlled, if tsh levels are not in the normal range, then efforts to control weight do not succeed. So first thing is bring tsh levels down to 3 to 4 milli units, then work on reducing weight. So please check tsh levels and come back. Thanks.

I started with the gym and my trainer is asking me to start the protein powder (isolated) for the betterment of body. But I am confused because many people says that this can cause problems in future. So is it good to use protein powder or not ?

I started with the gym and my trainer is asking me to start the protein powder (isolated) for the betterment of body....
Whey protein powder helps in muscle recovery after work out. It is not necessary to take an isolate, you can do a concentrate isolate as well. It has no side effects and it also helps in building up immunity. But one has to be careful with the dosage. So always take it with the consultation of a nutritionist.

Hi lybrate-user, according to your height, you are falling into overweight category. If you loose 10 kg weight, it will be more than sufficient. No need to reduce 25 kg weight. For that you have to exclude all junk and fried foods and sweets from your diet. Take small and frequent meals. Tell me your eating habits so that I can suggest you something for weight reduction. You can also message me on private inquiry for more information.

Hi my weight is 64 kg. My height is 5.10. My gender is male. I want to be fit. I'm going gym daily since 2 month. What diet should follow and what my weight should be according to my height.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye. Thanks for the query. You are underweight by 10 kgs for your height. Maintain a well-balanced and healthy diet. Without a proper diet, your efforts at the gym are useless. You need to ensure you are eating a sufficient amount of protein. Determine how many grams of protein you should eat a day (based on weight and physical activity). Great sources of protein include: nuts and nut butters, beans and other legumes, soy milk, cheese, egg whites, lean meats, poultry, and fish, paneer, sprouts are a great source of proteins for vegans. Ensure that your diet consists of mostly raw, minimally-processed foods. Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains. Opt for nutritionally dense foods that are low in fat and high in fiber. Stay away from soda and sugar. Avoid alcohol. Avoid tea and coffee as much as possible as both tend to dehydrate muscles leading to low muscle volume. Stick with it! the only way to get stronger is to hit the weights frequently. Also, try to do activities during the day that involve working your muscles. Get plenty of sleep. Your body requires lots of rest, so make sure to sleep at least 7 hours a day. If you go to the gym, make sure to do only what you can. Don't try to compete with other people who are lifting heavier weights. Everyone is different, and you will see progress if you are consistent with your diet and exercise routine. Do not use steroids to build muscles; steroids will hurt your body. Supplements will be useful only when your exercise intensity and diet is good.
