I have pain on my left foot heel. That does not pain on walk initially but on the left outer end precisely. After morning walk when I come back and rest a while then I get pain on the outer back end of the heel, or should say periphery of the heel. No broken bones history. The pain is around a year old and no relief even after visiting Orthopedics. Kindly suggest.

I have started walking and jogging recently (3 months now), I have pain in my right knee. Its not severe though. Can you suggest if I need to wear a knee strap or something during jogging as a preventive step? There are many products online but wanted to confirm what would be a good preventive step. Additional information 1. Temporarily stopping jogging is ok, long run I plan to jog regularly 2. I jog only and don't run 3. I jog outside in roads and not in treadmill with good jogging shows 4. I don't have any history of knee problems. 5. I am not looking for any medicine until its absolutely necessary. Please suggest what measures can be taken to prevent knee pain.

To be precise to your question. Pain in your knee may be due to weak Quadriceps muscles which causes weakening of cartilage of your knee cap a/k/a chondromalacia. Please don't wear any Knee cap as it will weaken your Quadriceps more. 1. Yes you can jog and take pauses in between this will help muscles to relax 2. Jogging is fine 3. In Indian roads there are a lot of bumps which might impact your knee ankle. Not a plain ground to run. 4. Don't worry this will be fine once you do Quadriceps strengthening exercises 5. No medication until you hv severe pain 6. Try doing cycling and swimming as this will strengthen your Quadriceps muscles more.

Sciatica - Non-Surgical Treatment For It!

Sciatica - Non-Surgical Treatment For It!

The term Sciatica is used to describe leg paintinglingnumbness or weakness that travels down the low back via the sciatic nerve to the back of leg. Sciatic nerve arises from each side of lower spine and passes deep in the buttock along the back of thigh and legs. The pain of Sciatica may be irregular/ infrequent or persistent causing severe agony to the patients. The pain of Sciatica may be confined to low back or hips or may extend up to toes. The pain of Sciatica can be excruciating and "not relieved by painkillers".

What causes Sciatica?

Pain in Sciatica is due to irritation or pinching of Sciatic nerve within the spine. This occurs most commonly due to prolapsed intervertebral disc (slip disc) causing nerve compression resulting in pain.

Is surgery the only treatment for Sciatica?

Most patients can be managed with medication/exercises. So surgery is not the only way out. Patients who have severe pain can also benefit from "Epidural Steroid Injection". This treatment has proven to be effective in avoiding spine surgery in such patients.

What is Epidural Steroid Injection?

Epidural Steroid Injection is a procedure done by a Specialist (Interventional Pain) in an Operation Theatre using X-Ray (Image Intensifier) to locate exact level of injection. A drug mixture consisting of Steroid with Local Anaesthetic is injected at the epidural space of affected nerve root. The steroid washes away inflammatory mediators from the epidural space which decreases the pain. Steroid also decreases the inflammatory response of body to the prolapsed disc. As a result the pain arising from nerve inflammation is decreased. This is a day care procedure i.e. the patients are discharged the same day.

How is the possibility of surgery ruled out?

Epidural Steroid Injection is a proven, safe and an effective treatment that works on the concept of Interventional pain management - to provide relief from persistent and chronic pain of Sciatica. Generally, a single injection is sufficient to relieve patients of the pain. The procedure can be repeated for a maximum 3 times in a year, depending on the patient's response. With effective pain relief, surgery is negated.

Extension Exercises x 15 times x twice daily - lying on tummy, take left arm up for 3 seconds, then bring it down, right arm up for 3 seconds, bring down. If she is unable to walk, then first of all try to find out the cause. Only then you will come to know whether her treatment is medical or surgical. At the age of 59 years, if she is having severe tricompartmental osteoarthritis of knees, then the treatment is total knee replacement, not any medicine.
