I am a 23 year old male. I met with a road accident on late of January and fractured my Femur Bone. Oblique Fracture. And had a vascular injury as well because of age accident. It's been complete 4 months but my xray are not showing any improvement. What should I do. I was treated with plates and nail for the support of my femur.

Fellowship in Joint Replacement, M.S. Ortho, Diploma In Orthopaedics (D. Ortho)
Orthopedist, Jalna
If the fracture is well fixed then it should unite in about 3-6 months in your age. Cause of delayed union may be compound injury, or vascular injury. I advise to wait 2 more months if your fracture is well fixed. After that also xray don't show union signs, then second surgery may be required.

Gentle Shoulder Stretching. Core Strengthening Exercises. Gentle Neck Exercises. Avoid sleeping on affected side. Warm up and cool down is a must. Contrast bath---It is a form of treatment shoulder is applied warm water followed by the immediate application of the shoulder with ice water. This procedure is repeated several times, alternating hot and cold. Note that the treatment should always end in the ice water, as heat will induce the body's inflammatory response, while cold helps to decrease inflammation.

I am 82 years old male. I am suffering from left knee arthritic pain. I have been managing with homoeopathy and pain killers. Now, the pain is becoming worse, making it difficult for me to walk. I want to avoid surgery. Have you any advice?

MPT - Orthopedic Physiotherapy, Fellowship in Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (FOR)
Physiotherapist, Kolkata
Hello 82 is a ave where your knee joint gets eroded a lot which leads to tremendous pain when you walk or climbs stairs. Hence you need to take care of your knee in order to decrease the joint loading by unloading it, the way to unload it, is to keep it hydrated by sitting at the edge of the couch/bed and tie a 2 kg weight cuff at the ankle and move/swing your knee in easy gentle low amplitude oscillations for ten minutes twice daily. Wear a knee brace with hinge daily when you are off the bed. Have lots of fresh fruits specially citrus fruits. Have anjeer four piece twice daily. Avoid lady finger, spicy foods, avoid peas, brinjal and tomatoes. Avoid mustard oil. Avoid tobacco in any form (if at all you consume) do knee strengthening (quadriceps, vmo, gluteus, tfl, hamsrings) exercises and hamstring and quadriceps stretching. Quadriceps drill. Partial squatting (30-40 degree bend) if your knee permits. If possible visit a skilled orthopedic physiotherapist. Hope it helps. Take care.

I am a 24yr old male person. I have a back pain problem when I got up in the morning. What should I do?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello. Maintain a right standing and sitting posture, keep your back always straight, avoid carrying weight on back. Hold or carry weight divided equally in both the hands or shoulders (to avoid over straining on one particular hand or shoulder). Lie down on bed on your back without pillow. Exercise: Practice Shavasana or Corpse Pose as it looks like a dead body. If practiced correctly and with full efforts, can relax every body part, relaxing not only the body but also the mind: Spread the legs one to two feet apart, the toes are turned outwards, the heels facing each other, a comfortable distance apart. Bring the arms a little away from the body, palms turned upward. Relax the neck and allow it to turn to the side if it is more comfortable. Close the eyes and focus the attention on the body, breathing normally. Begin focusing each body part and relaxing it, then moving on. Keep the mind focused on relaxation, the breath should be normal. Relax the whole body. (The mind and body are deeply connected. If the mind is occupied by thoughts and worries then the shavasana will be unsuccessful. Therefore one has to acquire the stability of the mind along with the stability of the body.) Medication: Take homoeopathic medicines - Arnica 200 and Rhus Tox. 200 - take both of them thrice daily for 1 week. Also, apply Schwabe's Topi-Arnica and Topi MP Gel on the affected area in circular motions gently thrice a day. Get back to me thereafter.

Hello lybrate-user, disc herniation at l4 l5 s1 disc herniation may lead to nerve root compression, pain in that sided thigh and tingling numbness depending upon the involvement. You will need to get yourself examined clinically in order to rule out neurodeficit and assess your straight leg raising test (doctors way to quantify the seriousness of the disorder) exercises avoid high impact activities like running, jogging, jumping sports and bending forwards. I have shiver pain backbone continuously from 3 months. And eyes get red in every 1 hours. Please help me.

DOMS, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
Red eye has many causes. You have to see if it is associated with blurring of vision, pain, discharge and other complaints. But commonly its allergic or infective in origin ie allergic or infective conjunctivitis. Which has simple treatment protocol. But still its wise to see an ophthalmologist for a thorough slit lamp examination to rule out other differentials for acute red eye. For pain in backe, I advice refer to an orthopaedician and tests done like xray, vit d levels, calcium levels, bone densitometry and vit b12 levels.

Pulled Elbow

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Delhi
Pulled Elbow
(syn. Subluxation of superior/inferior radio ulnar joint)
This is a painful condition of the elbow affecting children below the age of 5 years. It is caused by a pull on the arm with the forearm in a state of internal rotation. It is not the fall but the prevention of fall that causes the problem. Usually it occurs when the mother pulls the child by arm to put him on the other side while turning in bed. Sometimes when the child has a tendency to fall from the bed he, holds the bed sheet to prevent the fall, the whole body weight gives the momentum to internal rotation at the elbow joint and the upper/lower radio ulnar joint is partly dislocated.
It is a very painful condition the affected limb appears to be paralyzed
It is an orthopaedic emergency and the child should be taken to an orthopaedic surgeon or to the casualty department of a hospital immediately.
The x-ray usually does not show any abnormality.
Reduction of the joint displacement is easy. A cuff and collar sling is usually adequate.
If the condition becomes recurrent, a plaster may have to be applied for 2-3 weeks.
No medicine is required.
A chocolate is usually sufficient to bring a smile on the face of the child and parents.

I have a fracture on my left hand. So I want to ask that how much protein or calories I will take for my fast recovery?

BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
By volume, about 50% of bone is protein. When a bone fracture takes place, the body starts collecting protein building blocks to create new bone. 1) protein - 10 to 20 grams increase in protein intake notably accelerate bone fracture healing. 2) calories - an adult normally requires around 2000 - 2, 500 calories per day, but a person with bone fractures may need up to 3, 500 - 5, 000 calories in a day! (depending upon how severe the fracture is) 3) vitamin - several vitamins have vital roles in the healing process; vitamins c, d and k as well as the energy producing b vitamins. 4) exercise - exercise is an important way to accelerate fracture healing. The healing process requires good blood circulation, and a satisfactory flow of nutrient replenishing blood to the fracture area. However, make sure to not put stress on the fracture. Hope the tip helps to recover fast. Get well soon!
