No Salt Please!

No Salt Please!

It is estimated that 25% of people with normal blood pressure and about 60% of those with high blood pressure are salt sensitive, which means that as salt intake goes up so does blood pressure.

'salt to taste' as it reads in most recipes.... At times far exceeds the sodium requirements of our bodies, resulting in water retention, stress on our kidneys and bloating up. Not to mention the fact that if you are salt-sensitive then you may be at a much higher risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Apart from the salt that you add to your food, do you know the amount of stealth salt you are exposed to? the papads, the pickles and the farsan that you eat have excessive salt and so does any other packaged food that you may be consuming on a regular basis. A good idea is to read the labels of what you are buying.

Let us help you identify the stealth salt in your food...

  •     Use less, or no, salt in cooking or preparing dishes like salads, sauces and dips.
  •     Remove the table salt and any salt seasoning - such as lemon, pepper, garlic and onion salts.
  •     You should set aside the masala sachets that come with instant noodles, readymade soups, sauces etc.
  •     Don't use ready-made salad dressings.

The alternatives:
For additional flavour to your food, minus the excessive salt, keep a stock of fresh garlic, onion, ginger, parsley, coriander, and seasonings like, dry onion powder, dry mustard, nutmeg, black pepper and roasted cumin powder in your kitchen.

Remember: it's easier to cut down on sodium when you are on a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products.

All You Need To Know About Headaches

All You Need To Know About Headaches

Mind your headaches (All about headaches)

Headaches and migraines are one of the most common types of pains that patients can face. There are many types of headaches that may afflict people and there are a number of reasons that can be attributed as their cause.

Let's look at some of the types of headaches and their causes:

Facial headaches - This is an ache, which is usually centered on the face, the crown, and the forehead. In this headache, movements of the head and face may also cause problems.

  • Causes: The main cause for facial headaches tends to be sinusitis, a condition in which the cavities in the skull get blocked. Sinusitis may also happen due to a cold as this has often been accompanied by a runny nose as well.
  • Treatments: The best treatment for this issue would be to treat the underlying condition, i.e. the cold or the blockages. Using the prescribed variety of decongestants and inhalers can vastly improve the situation.

Migraines - This is an intense pain on one side of the head that can last for a few hours to a few days. Most of the pain is sometimes centered behind the eye, and many people report extreme sensitivity to light as well as sound. It can be debilitating to some people who suffer from a severe form of it.

  • Causes: Migraines are one of the most complicated problems to diagnose and there can be a variety of reasons for it. Triggers may include food or lack of it and also be caused by other underlying physiological reasons.
  • Treatments: Although there are certain painkillers, which are available, it is best to consult a doctor to know the root cause and thus, avoid the triggers or take appropriate medicines if necessary.

Tension Headaches - These headaches are induced by periods of stress, anxiety, anger and other mental distresses.

  • Causes: These headaches are a result of stress, which may result in the decrease of the blood flow to the brain due to the stiffening of the head and neck muscles.
  • Treatments: Over the counter drugs such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help improve them, but it is better to consult a physician before undertaking self-medication.

Cluster Headaches - These are the most potent form of headaches that can be very painful. They usually originate as a piercing pain in the head with pressure on the eye and can even lead eye inflammation, and watery and droopy eyes.

  • Causes: Certain neural functions originating from the hypothalamus can cause this issue and this type of headache may be triggered by alcohol, smoking or other forms of strong smells.
  • Treatments: Generic painkillers may not be able to correct the issue quickly enough and this may require the administering of special injections or nasal sprays.

'Consult'.

Will vitamin D save my life? Should I really be taking four times the recommended daily dose? Should I intake anything else to have normal life?

Deficiency causes ricket/osteomalacia, poor hair growth, increased risk of cancer. 1. Expose yourself to sunlight for 15-20 minutes daily in the morning 2. Take milk, cheese, egg yolk, fish (salmon/mackerel/ trout/sardines/tuna) cod liver oil, mushroom, cereals, orange juice. 3. If you have deficiency of vitamin d you have to take vitamin d supplement 60000iu/week for 3 months after consulting physician.

I have appendicitis taking treatment and is it ok to do abs exercises? Will it burst? Consulted doctor told me.

MBBS
General Physician, Malappuram
I have appendicitis taking treatment and is it ok to do abs exercises? Will it burst? Consulted doctor told me.
Walking is a safe way to restart your activity after surgery. Although it is not generally thought of as an abdominal exercise, walking while paying attention to your posture strengthens your abs passively and safely. With your doctor's clearance, you can begin more focused exercises. Sit on the edge of a chair or bed and steady yourself with your hands. Slowly lift one leg at a time, with your knees bent. Repeat this 12 to 15 times on each leg. As you gain more strength, progress to lifting both legs simultaneously. If you have more queries you can consult me. I have a good plan for you thank you.

Let us consider the treatment of a fungal infection in the groin region i. e. around genitals. Medical treatment we will see in the last. First thing what you need to do is, keep the area clean. Then see to it that the region is always dry because Wet and moist environment provides nice place for fungus to breed. Change the underwear daily. Old underwears to be thrown, please buy new ones. Stop smoking, tobbacco chewing etc. habbits if present. Maintain good diet without sweet for a few days in non diabetics, diabetics need blood sugar level control. Medicines can be prescribed. My wife have bleeding problem in nose once or twice in every year from last 3 years. What is the problem and what is treatment.

MS , MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Hi. Bleeding from the nose, both in children and young adults is due to nose picking. Although in elderly its mainly because of hypertension. Sometimes even vigorous rubbing of nose could cause nasal bleed. As an emergency, you could pinch the nose for five minutes while you breath through the nose and that should stop nasal bleed.
