Hair Transplant - Who Can Opt for it

Hair Transplant - Who Can Opt for it

Hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness is a condition that affects both men and women equally. Surgical hair transplantation is the only solution for restoring the lost hair in pattern baldness when medical hair restoration does not offer you a good hair re-growth. If you have well-defined and clearly established areas or patterns of baldness on the crown with healthy dense coverage of hair at the sides and the back of the head, you are probably suitable for a hair transplant surgery. Hair that is transplanted in the frontal region of the skull generally offers the best results. However, a hair transplant procedure can also be carried out on any other area of your head if you have some bald patch there.

It is best to have detailed information about the hair transplant procedure before you make plans to undergo a surgery. It is only after you have read through all the information that you can understand and appreciate the significance of surgical hair restoration. The information will also help you decide whether you are the right candidate for the hair transplant surgery. Receiving a hair transplant can improve your appearance and self-confidence.

All those who can opt for a hair transplant:

  1. Men with male-pattern baldness

  2. Women suffering from hair thinning

  3. Anyone who has lost some hair from a burn or scalp injury

Hair replacement isn’t a good option for:

  1. Women with a wide-spread pattern of hair loss throughout the scalp

  2. People who don’t have enough “donor” hair sites from which to remove hair for transplant

  3. People who form keloid scars (thick, fibrous scars) after injury or surgery

  4. People whose hair loss is due to medication like chemotherapy

Two types of procedures

It's worth noting that there are new surgical techniques involved in hair transplants:

  1. FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction: The hairs are individually extracted from the back of the head and re-planted across the area. This is a lengthy, pain-staking process but the result is minimal scarring and a very natural-looking hairline.
  2. FUT - Follicular Unit Transplantation: This technique involves taking a larger area or 'strip' of hair from the back of the head, dividing it into smaller units and then re-planting those units in the desired area of hair loss. Scarring can be slightly more conspicuous at the back of the head as a larger area has been removed but an expert surgeon will minimise incision marks to ensure rapid healing.

Hair transplant do, of course, utilise your own natural hair and re-growth can be expected within 4 weeks of surgery. Great care must be taken during your recovery period to protect the newly-transplanted hair. However, once it is deemed safe to resume normal activities, the results can be life-transforming. A successful hair transplant is permanent and can restore confidence and self-esteem.

You should scrub your face and body once in every two days. You can either buy a good scrubber from the market or make a natural one yourself using besan and yogurt. Waxing also helps control the appearance of too much hair. Laser hair removal gives permanent results

Slowly straighten the knee until a stretch is felt in the back of the thigh, trying to get the bottom of the foot to face the ceiling, one leg at a time. Hold the position initially for 10 seconds, and gradually work up to 20 to 30 seconds.

When I was 18 years old my hair was smooth and I coloured it for 3 times but now I'm 20 years old and my hair became rough. What should I do for that?

B.Sc. - Dietitics / Nutrition, Nutrition Certification,Registered Dietitian
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Delhi
First of all, stop colouring and follow this daily - 1. Use mild shampoo to wash hair (you can make your own shampoo using reetha and shikakai at home) 2. Stop using conditioners. Use natural conditioners like egg, yougurt and lemon. 3. Massage your scalp with a mix of oils like olive, coconut, sesame, castor oil at night. 4. Apply raw amla juice on hair thrice a week. 5. Rub your scalp with the juice of white onion. 6. Use a paste of bhringraj on hair. 7. You can use some good hair packs like - fenugreek and yogurt, egg and green tea. 8. You can rinse your hair with organic apple cider vinegar after washing your hair to maintain ph balance of your hair. 9. Hair health depends on the amount of protein in your diet. Foods like chicken, eggs, fish, nuts, dry fruits gives you the required nutrients to keep your skin and hair healthy. So consume plenty of them. Eat things rich in vitamin c like amla and oranges. 10. Drink lots of water to flush out toxins from the body.

I am loosing my hair rapidly. My hair is a bit curly and after washing with oil or shampoo it remains absolutely dry as if I didn't use any thing. Please suggest me something to prevent this.

IAT, BHMS

Hair loss happens due to various reasons and to treat it correctly the cause has to be known. There are temporary and permanent types of bair loss. You can try taking a multivitamin supplement with iron and zinc for a month to see if it helps. If your hair loss does not reduce with this you should consult a trichologist for further investigation as early treatment is the key to successful results in hair loss. Hair follicles once damaged or dead are difficult to be revived back so do not waste much time on trying shampoos or oils instead look for internal causes of hair loss. Have a healthy balanced diet and include sprouts, green tea, almonds, walnuts and flaxseeds and leafy greens in your diet. Avoid red meat, ghee, cheese, butter, smoking, fried food and sweets. Exercise regulary to improve the blood circulation to your scalp.

I am 26 years old guy. I need a good amount of hair. What can I do best regarding oiling my hair? Will that improve growth of hair?

BHMS, DEMS
Homeopath, Pune
Use B&T Hair Growth Oil Feed your hair: Have a good balanced diet Hair requires a good number of vitamins and minerals too. Vitamin A encourages healthy production of sebum in the scalp and also helps in hair growth. It is found in dark leafy green vegetables, sweet red peppers, mango, papaya etc. Vitamin B12 found in milk, and milk products, beans etc. Is useful for hair growth. Biotin is very important for hair health. A deficiency of biotin can cause hair fall and hair thinning. So, if you are suffering from hair fall, include foods like dairy products, nuts, green vegetables e.g. Cabbage that are rich source of biotin in your regular diet. 2. Give hair their building blocks: Have a protein-rich diet Proteins are the building blocks of hair. Adequate protein intake promotes hair health and in turn helps curb hair loss. Indulge in a protein-rich diet, which comes in the form of lentils, dried beans, cottage cheese and of course, milk.   3. Hydrate your hair: Have enough water.
