Effects of Excessive Use of Social Networking on Mental Health

Social networking refers to a multitude of websites that let the people from across the globe to get in touch with each other and interact through photos, videos discussions or audio. To name a few, Facebook tops the list by having over 1.2 billion active users monthly from across the world, followed by Twitter, Snapchat and LinkedIn.

As per the latest statistics, around 42% of populace online at one time, is using social networking sites either on their laptops or mobiles. Majority of this population is below 30 years of age, whereas the figure is changing for internet users aged 65 years and above. People use these sites to stay in touch with family and friends, to share things, express their views on matters and to find out what's happening in the other corner of the world.

But this usage can have many negative effects on the mental health and well-being of users both children and adults.

  1. It is addictive: It has been analyzed that these social networking sites are often addictive with people using them daily or even several times during a day. They log in to these sites for many reasons like to overcome boredom, distraction, to check their likes and comments which are usually a positive support after posting a status or information.
  2. It makes us do unfair comparisons: Various posts on social media at times make people compare their lives with others. And it is said, the grass is always greener on the other side, it makes you feel low thinking how idealized are the lives of people connected to you.

I am experiencing hair fall from my beard. Everyday I wash my face I see the 2-3 hairs come out from my beard with hair root. What should I do.

2- 3 hairs coming out is normal .Natural remedies for hair fall patches in the beard include rubbing onion on the patchy area, applying neem paste (margosa tree leaves), massaging with castor oil, coconut oil and other common oils. But care has to be taken that whatever method is adopted, it should be followed for quite some time for the actual results to show up. Coconut milk can be prepared by grinding the coconut with water and squeezing it to get pure coconut milk. This milk should be rubbed with light finger strokes acutely to and fro over the affected area. Rubbing increases the blood circulation of the affected area and an increased metabolism aids in increased hair growth.

Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery - How Laparoscopy Can Help In It?

Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery - How Laparoscopy Can Help In It?

Obesity is a serious lifestyle disorder that can trigger a myriad of health complications. You may often come across people who fail to lose an inch even after toiling hard. The situation may be further complicated and life-threatening if a person is suffering from diabetes, hypertension, arthritis or a heart problem. Bariatric Surgery comes as a much-needed relief for people who desperately need to lose weight to prevent health problems. People between 18-65 years of age can go for a Bariatric weight loss surgery. The surgery is also helpful for people with morbid obesity (a condition where the BMI is over 40) with associated complications.

Common types of Bariatric surgeries

  1. The Laparoscopic Gastric Banding: The gastric banding surgery is a surgical weight loss procedure that divides the stomach into two compartments so that a person consumes lesser amount of food.
    • The surgery requires the surgeon to make 3-4 small cuts in the belly.
    • An adjustable silicone band is placed into the stomach (through the small incisions) to divide the stomach into two compartments (a smaller upper half and a bigger lower part).
    • Due to the banding, the stomach can hold not more than an ounce of food, thus limiting the amount of food a person can eat.
    • There is an opening in the band which serves as a passage through which the food eaten is passed to the rest of the stomach.
    • There is a plastic tube that connects the band to an injection port (situated under the skin). It is through this port that saline is either added or removed from the silicone band (to adjust the tightness of the band).
  2. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery (RGB): The bypass surgery also involves compartmentalizing the stomach into an upper half (small pouch, almost the size of a walnut) and a bigger lower part. Like the gastric banding, the rearrangement reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold to a great extent. In the next step, also termed as the bypass step, the surgeon makes a small hole in the pouch to connect it to the small intestine or the jejunum. As a result of the bypass, the food will now directly enter the small intestine from the pouch. While the bypass surgery can be done using laparoscopy, a person can also undergo an open surgery.
  3. Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: As the name suggests, the surgery involves excision of a large part of a stomach. The excision leaves behind a small sleeve-like pouch, the arrangement ensuring that a person consumes a lesser amount of food.
  4. Biliopancreatic Diversion: The surgery is risky and is advised only when an individual has a BMI of more than 50. In Biliopancreatic Diversion, the surgeon excises a part of the stomach, while connecting the remaining half to the lower part of the small intestine or jejunum. As a result, a person consumes lesser calories than before. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Mam I was told by doctor that I have pcod what is it why did it happen and what is the cure ?

Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian (RD), PGDD, Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S), General Physician
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
polycystic ovary syndrome treatment generally focuses on management of your individual main concerns, such as infertility, hirsutism, acne or obesity. As a first step, I recommend weight loss through a low-calorie diet combined with moderate exercise activities. Low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets may increase insulin levels, so you may want to consider a low-carbohydrate diet if you have pcos as prescribed by a registered dietitian only. Don't severely restrict carbohydrates; instead, choose complex carbohydrates, which are high in fiber. The more fiber in a food, the more slowly it's digested and the more slowly your blood sugar levels rise. High-fiber carbohydrates include whole-grain breads and cereals, whole-wheat pasta, bulgur wheat, barley, brown rice, and beans. Limit less healthy, simple carbohydrates such as soda, excess fruit juice, cake, candy, ice cream, pies, cookies and doughnuts. Even a modest reduction in your weight for instance, losing 5 percent of your body weight might improve your condition I being a both a registered dietitian (rd) and doctor have been successfully helping patients with their problems through a holistic approach using customized therapeutic diet and medications. I will also suggest home remedies. Do reply back for private consultation for rx.

You can definitely achieve the fit body with good amount of muscle tissue. The healthy way of putting on weight is good diet and exercise. Now, you should focus on what you are eating. Increase your protein intake and good fats. Avoid fried foods and sweets. Take more protein rich foods such as eggs, fish, lean meat, soya chunks, paneer, curds. You should aim at increasing weight through proper diet rich in multiple sources of protein, complex carbs, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. You should consult a health coach/nutritionist for getting a proper advise on how to increase your weight in the right way. The weight increasing supplements that are usually marketed on tv and media have lot of carbs and sugars, which increase your weight by the way of increasing your fat percentage, which is not the right thing to do. Get in touch with us to get a diet plan that suits you. Warm regards.
