Hello! I am 23 years old n I am having backpain for past 2 weeks. First I want to know the reason for this n next ho...
Hello, first of all you should know what is backache and by which factors it caused and aggravated. The usual cause of low back pain is the sedentary lifestyle that we lead these days. There is hardly any movement. We remain seated most of the time and stand for very short periods of time. Unfortunately walking, running and cycling like activities are also not a part of our daily routine. To add to it, our diet consists more and more of junk food. Fresh fruits, vegetables and high fibre foods are consumed less and less. These daily practices lead to obesity. The increased body weight puts lot of pressure on the spine which has to bear all the extra unwanted weight. The back muscles which are already weak due to lack of exercise and wrong posture are unable to cope with this increased load. This causes pain in the back muscles. Management for Low Back Pain:-Along with medicines for relieving pain, one needs to identify the cause and correct it. This may require some medicines or some correction in your posture or reducing weight or improving your lifestyle. At the same time, there is a need to work on the local muscle strengthening. Back muscles need to be strengthened so that they can bear the weight of the upper body. For this exercises of the back muscles are very helpful. Regular walking is also very helpful as it is a wholesome exercise of the body, improves blood circulation and helps lose weight. Most importantly if you are overweight then losing weight is an important part of the whole treatment plan .Long term use of painkillers for low back pain is harmful Treatment for low back pain:- Homeopathic medicines are very helpful. They not only treat the acute stages but are also for the treatment of back pain but selection of the exact remedy depends upon the individual symptoms of the person. So choose the doctor of your choice, share the complete symptom picture and get the treament. Take care..

In time of summer she can walk but not more but in summer time she is not even to walk properly because of severe knee pain. Because of pain she can not move her knees. Your mother may be suffering from age related degenerated changes in her knee joints. Early morning stiffness and difficulty walking especially with seasonal change is common. Along with allopathic and homeopathic treatments you need to take her to a good physiotherapist who can mobilise the joint to increase the range of motion, give modalities like IFT or Ultrasound therapy for pain relief and exercises to increase the strength of the muscles, and teach her a proper gait pattern. Also please get her Vitamin D and calcium levels checked.

Persistent low back pain: 6 questions to ask yourself

Persistent low back pain: 6 questions to ask yourself

80% of all people suffer from (lbp) low back pain at least once in their lifetime. So, if you are having one, no big deal. But if your back pain continues beyond reasonable time (say, about 6 weeks) or recurs frequently, then something must be wrong with your health habits. To find out what, you should ask yourself these questions:

#1 am I sitting the wrong way?

A slouch sitting on a badly designed chair for a long time produces considerable amount of lbp. Sit straight with butts deep inside the seat so that your thighs are completely supported. Your feet should be supported too, instead of hanging in the thin air, so adjust the chair height or get a foot rest. It is best to add a cushion in the lumbar area (the hollow of your back opposite the umbilicus). A rolled up towel works fine, but if you are the spending type then you can order the mckenzie roll.

Invest in a good ergonomic chair if you are on a sitting job, mind you, the costliest is not the best, so look for user review or expert opinion while choosing one.

#2 am I bending too much?

Frequency of flexion (forward bending) is a known risk for lbp. In fact a study has shown if you control forward bending early in the morning there is significant improvement in the low back pain. So, next time use a broom with a log handle, tie the shoelace with the foot over the stool, bend the knees instead of stooping when you pick up something from the floor. In short, stop forward bending as much as possible.

#3 are my daily activities taking a toll on my back?

Are sundays/leisure days better than a working day? if yes, then most probably your adls (activities of daily living) are over stressing your back. Remember, there are two ways to perform any work, the wrong way: when you hurt your back and the right way, when you protect it. If your job involves sitting for prolonged time without much movement, lifting and carrying heavy objects, riding two wheelers or operating machines that vibrates a lot then you should take frequent rest in between and exercise.

#4 am I performing the correct exercise?

First, are you exercising at all? studies have shown sedentary lifestyle is a known risk factor for back pain. So, if you do any physical activity you are positioned better prevent lbp.

If you are already suffering from lbp then depending on your type of pain you need to perform specific exercises. There is no single exercise prescription that cures them all, so consult a good physio who will show you the correct set of exercises. While in most cases a properly designed exercise regime is sufficient to get rid of low back pain, a wrong set of exercise may have a disastrous effect on the back pain.

#5 am I suffering from an underlying disease?

While most back pains are mechanical in nature (overload related) a variety of systemic diseases are associated with low back pain, ranging from forms of arthritis to cancer to kidney stone. The hallmark of a mechanical back pain is it changes intensity with body posture. Still, when in doubt, always seek professional help.

#6 am I suffering from stress?

Stress can both produce back pain and delay the recovery. Negative emotions like depression, anxiety, anger, tension etc have far reaching implications on health issues like back pain than we commonly realize. If this is the case for you then don't ignore it. There are a number of ways to de-stress, you need to choose what suits you.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Disc protrusions to some degree can be seen in upto 70% of people undergoing mri of their lower back, of which 70% are not symptomatic, and around 90% just need conservative management of their backs. What you have written are mri findings of your lower back which is fine but we have to treat patient and not the mri. These findings are only significant if they correlate with your examination and clinical findings. So you are advised to tell me your elaborate clinical history of pain and also tell me whether it is only back pain or any symptoms like pain, numbness, paraesthesia etc in legs as well? do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards Dr. Akshay kumar saxena Consultant orthopaedics fortis hospital, new delhi.

Great to know you are such a enthusiatic & good athlete. If you have shooting pain from your back going to your legs it could be spine related issue leading to nerve compression. You may need specific medications and interventions for it. In addition to good physical therapy in form of spine strengthening exercises. Consult a pain specialist or spine surgeon. Its better to go for treatment at early stage especially since your an athlete.

Orthopedist,
I am 30 years old I have back pain so what I should do?
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You are very young to actually have persistent back pains. If you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation. Thanks & regards

Firstly keep it supported in a crepe bandage and take some cold pack on it, if swelling is there which doesn't go, get yourself examined by an orthopedic.
