Want a Healthy Heart - 11 Foods You Must Have!

Master in Food & Nutrition, B.Sc. - Home Science

Want a Healthy Heart - 11 Foods You Must Have!

While every organ in the body needs to be cared for, the heart assumes a very special place. What is good for the heart can be good for the whole body and the reverse is equally true. The effects of a diet that is unhealthy for the heart is definitely unhealthy for the whole body.
With lifestyle changes like heart disease, diabetes, obesity and stroke are on the rise, the importance of eating a heart healthy diet has assumed all new levels of importance. The following are some of the heart healthy foods that should be a part of everybody’s diet.

  1. Fatty fishes: Salmon, sardines and mackerel are loaded with generous amounts of omega-3 fatty acids and reduce the risk of arterial plaque buildup. They are also rich in antioxidants. Eating fish at least twice a week is recommended; for non-fish eaters, supplements of Omega-3 fatty acids are recommended.
  2. Oatmeal: Oats again are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, folate and potassium. It is also rich in soluble fibre and is believed to lower bad cholesterol and keep the arteries free of plaque. It soaks up the cholesterol in the digestive system and helps manage cholesterol.
  3. Avocado: This creamy fruit has loads of monounsaturated fat which helps lower the levels of bad cholesterol and improve levels of good cholesterol. They also improve absorption of other carotenoids like lycopene and beta-carotene, which are also extremely heart friendly.
  4. Berries: Blueberries, strawberries, and other berries reduce the risk of heart attack by almost one-third. These are rich in compounds like anthocyanins and flavonoids which are proven antioxidants. They relax the blood vessels and reduce blood pressure and reduce the incidence of heart attacks.
  5. Dark chocolate: Chocolate which contains 60-70% cocoa is rich in polyphenols, which helps blood pressure, clotting, and inflammation.
  6. Olive Oil: Loaded with monounsaturated fats, this helps reduce levels of bad cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. The extra-virgin variety is preferred for cooking in place of regular vegetable oils.
  7. Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, pistachios, peanuts, and macadamia nuts are packed with mono and polyunsaturated fats, fibre, and vitamin E. Flaxseed is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and can be added to oatmeal or eaten raw.
  8. Soy: Soy products, including tofu and soy milk, are ideal for adding protein and reducing cholesterol and polyunsaturated fats, fibre, vitamins, and minerals.
  9. Legumes: These are high in omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and soluble fibre.
  10. Spinach: Helps with its rich content of fibre, folate, lutein, and potassium. In fact, most vegetables have a beneficial effect.
  11. Green tea: Rich in antioxidants, it reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Include some of the heart healthy foods and see your heart smile!! If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

After 3 months of angioplasty I often feel panic attack with palpitation and missed beats occasionally.

Internal Medicine Specialist, Ajmer
After 3 months of angioplasty I often feel panic attack with palpitation and missed beats occasionally.
These may be due to paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, ask your cardiologist for a 24 hour holter monitoring study. It is just a continuous ecg recording for 24 hours and will pick up any abnormality in heart beats that occurs at any time of the day.

Dear Doctor, I am having diabetic and hypertension for the last 12 years. I am 51 years old. I am presently taking the following medicines: Glycomet GP 0.5 mg 2-0-2 Zita 100 mg 1-0-0 Atorva 10 0 -0-1 Olmax 40 1-0-0 Revelol am 5 /50 - 0-0-1 Presently on a recent checking my BP levels and cholestrol levels seems to be fine and normal. BP 90/130 Total Cholestrol : 118, Trigliceride: 127 ,LDL : 60 ,HDL :45. I presume my BP and cholestrol and BP levels are fine with these numbers. My concern is diabetics. Earlier 3 years back my medication was Pioglit 15 , after its so called ban, doctor changed the medicine to Glycomet GP 0.5 mg which i am using for the last three and half years. My fasting & pp sugar initially even after medication happens to be 130 / 170 levels. However during the last 4 months my sugar started shooting up , partly due to official preoccupations. My HbA1c levels are nearing 8 and morning fasting levels ( vary between 170 to 200) depending on the food what i take at night. Doctor asked me to increase the dosage of medicine and now i am using Glycomet GP 0.5 mg 2-0-2 instead of earlier 1-0-1. Zita i am using only 100 mg. I am not seeing any change in sugar levels. I s the combination right ? should i need to change it ? Please guide. Since i have a touring job for 15 days a month, i resort to outside food and i do walking. Please guide.

Yes you can take all these medications together in the morning regularly And if we talk about hypertension Many factors can affect blood pressure, including: 1) The amount of water and salt you have in your body 2) The condition of your kidneys, nervous system, or blood vessels 3) Your hormone levels You are more likely to be told your blood pressure is too high as you get older. This is because your blood vessels become stiffer as you age. When that happens, your blood pressure goes up. High blood pressure increases your chance of having a stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease, or early death. I read your query, by the information I have in hand my advice to you would be 1) Keep a BP daily record for at least one week 2) Basic tests should be one to rule out cardiac issues 3) unless any recent evaluation has been done I would advice these test ECG ECHO Lipid Profile TSH Get back to me with a detailed history and  old / new records for a better individualized advice.

My wife is 47 years old having chronic problem of low blood pressure, low pulses and sometimes, subsequent depression. Can you suggest some minimal medication to cure this problem. Thanks.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
I understand your concern and would explain that low blood pressure could be related to different causes: - chronic anemia - dehydration - electrolytes imbalances from malnutrition - orthostatic hypotension, etc. I would recommend performing some tests to investigate for the possible cause: - a resting ECG - blood lab tests (complete blood count, blood electrolytes, kidney and liver function tests) A head up tilt test would be necessary to exclude possible orthostatic hypotension. If all these tests result normal there is nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, I would recommend avoiding prolonged standing up position and take plenty of fluids (water, juices) to stay well hydrates. An increase in the salt and caffeine intake could help in raising blood pressure. Hope to have been helpful! Greetings!
