dear shashank, Hashimotos Thyroiditis and subsequent Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder . This is an auto immune condition. This means that your body's immune system attacks your own thyroid cells and might eventually destroy the cells. There are many causes which can precipitate this attack like a viral attack, trauma, post partum period, +ve family history, selenium deficiency etc. The treatment of hypothyroidism is thyroid hormone replacement The treatment of Hashimoto's disease without hypothyroidism is only symptomatic. Once your TSH goes above 5 miu/ ml we need to start on treatment please revert back with your thyroid profile

I have diabetes since last 15 years and it is largely controlled but time and again it goes beyond the regulated limits. I am experiencing pain in my feet and maybe because of neuropathy, and there is also a sense of numbness. Lately is is seen that the third toe on my right leg has curved downward. Can you suggest treatment for the above and who should be consulted. Thanks/regards

M B B S, M. D (Internal Medicine)
General Physician, Nellore
If your glycated hemoglobin is within fair control, then you need not bother about occasional rises in the sugar levels. Neuropathic pains are treated symptomatically. They are expected to happen after so many years. Do not worry about your toe. I think it is only age-related changes in the joints.

Your bl sugar report is normal, iam not sure whether you are takin any medines or not but you need to get anti- septic dressing daily & some antibiotic course, for which you have to see the doctor. You take care of the feet so well as you take care of your face specially in diabetes.

Do regular light exercise along with meditation. 4. Take more sprouts. 5. Instead of pure curd, take diluted curd mixed with cucumber, onion (raayta). 6. Use cow milk and its products. 7. In fruits, you may take papaya, apple, orange, pear, jamun, guava in average quantiy. 8. Soyabean chunks, dal, and atta is good. 9. Sabudana khichri is good in breakfast. 10. Curd made by methi seeds is good (boil the milk with methi seeds and make curd of this).

lybrate-user, Arre you on treatment with thyroxine tablets? Because Anti TPO antibodies, indicate there is Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. In this situation TSH can be normal, but there is hypothyroidism. That affects menstrual cycles. So getting conceived is difficult. Since you have not mentioned anything about thyroxine treatment, I asked this question. Thanks.

Increase thirst, increased frequency of urination are some initial symptoms of diabetes but it can vary from being completely asymptomatic to non specific symptoms like weakness, tingling in feet, dry mouth, blurry vision, burning during urination. You need to follow a healthy lifestyle to prevent such metabolic diseases. Type 1 usually occurs at younger age due to insulin deficiency and treated with insulin injections. Type 2 usually in adults due to insulin resistance and treated with oral medicines.

For hypothyroidism only treatment is taking thyroxine tablets in prescribed dosage regularly without fail for life. Plus avoid cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard, soya and soya products and coffee. Use whole grain flour breads, consume a lot of green vegetables (other than those mentioned) and exercise regularly. For you (uric acid 7.1 mg) if there is no symptom then there is no need for any medicine. All those with high uric acid are not likely to suffer with gout or any other problem. Your level is marginally high and nothing to worry about. Continue jogging.

It will be much better to first control the TSH and all symptoms before going for another modality of treatment. You are, in the perimenopausal period which is adding to the problems. If you like, please contact me for discussion and advice.
