I do not brush regularly I realised its my mistake. Now my teeth has plaque n tartar. Someone told me for cleansing. But you scared if my teeth become weak. What to do. Please help can I take one dentist cleansing. Or any other way toh eliminate plaque and tartar.

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Dear Lybrateuser, - For removing the plaque & tartar do consult a dentist & have it cleaned, not to worry as teeth won't get deal - once the teeth are cleaned, to maintain them brush at least twice a day or better after every meal, also learn to floss - have 7-8 glasses of water for adequate hydration as dryness leads to deposit & staining - have more of fruits & vegetables as chew them helps remove tartar & keeps them shining.

oral cancer is not common to all.. factors like habits of smoking, drinking, tobacco chewing etc. increase the risk of cancer. .. do visit to a dentist regularly twice in a year for routine check up...if any signs of cancer is diagnosed, it can be cured at early stage easily. ..

Toothache in common cold

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Basic Life Support (B.L.S), BDS

Toothache in common cold
Common cold can cause pain in the upper back teeth. This is because the roots of these teeth are very close to the maxillary sinus which is involved in sinusitis. So, a person suffering from sinusitis can experience tooth pain even in the absence of any problem in the tooth as such.
The usual measures to treat sinusitis are sufficient to help cure the tooth pain in such cases.

Teeth can be whitened by a procedure called Teeth Bleaching which is generally quite a safe procedure but has to be done under the supervision of your dentist.

Eat lot of fruits & green leafy vegetables & drink plenty of water. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need coronoplasty (smoothen teeth edges) along with t. Rebagen 10, morning one tab & one at night for 5 days, c. Becosules 5 cap, for five days in the morning after meals. Hexigel ointment on the area of ulcer. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

Geographic tongue is the name of a condition that gets its name from its map-like appearance on the upper surface and sides of the tongue. It may occur in other areas of your mouth, as well. You'll be relieved to know that geographic tongue is a harmless, benign condition that isn't linked to any infection or cancer. Two other names for geographic tongue are benign migratory glossitis and erythema migrans. Affecting about 1% to 3% of people, geographic tongue can show up at any age. However, it tends to affect middle-aged or older adults more often. It appears to be more common in women than in men. Symptoms of Geographic Tongue The telltale signs of geographic tongue are irregular, smooth, red patches on parts of the tongue. These patches may: Have a white or light-colored border Vary in size, shape, and color Appear one area, and then move to another area Come and go or change very quickly in days, weeks, or months Last up to a year You may be unaware that you have geographic tongue until your dentist or other health care provider diagnoses it during an oral exam. About one in 10 people with geographic tongue may have mild discomfort or a burning or painful sensation. This is often from sensitivity to substances such as: Hot, spicy, or acidic foods Cigarette smoke Toothpaste Causes and Risk Factors Geographic tongue occurs when parts of the tongue are missing layers of small bumps called papillae. They normally cover the entire upper layer of your tongue. Why do you lose these papillae with geographic tongue? Nobody knows for sure. However, because geographic tongue tends to run in families, genetics may be a common link. Geographic tongue has also been seen more frequently in people with psoriasis and in those with fissured tongue. In fissured tongue, cracks and grooves appear on the tops and sides of the tongue. Treatment or Self-Care for Geographic Tongue Seeing a dentist or doctor is the best way to rule out a more serious problem. In most cases, he or she can diagnose geographic tongue from a description of your symptoms and from examining your mouth and tongue. You may need tests to rule out other medical conditions. In most cases, any pain or discomfort will get better without treatment. But if you have severe, ongoing pain, medication can help. These are examples of what your doctor or dentist may prescribe: Over-the-counter pain relievers Anti-inflammatories Mouth rinses with anesthetic Corticosteroids applied directly on the tongue Zinc supplements If you're wondering about steps you can take to hasten the relief of symptoms, try limiting these substances or avoid them altogether: Tobacco Hot, spicy, or acidic foods or dried, salty nuts Toothpaste with additives, whitening agents, or heavy flavoring (toothpaste for sensitive teeth is a better choice)

I am suffering from an accident whch cause bleeding in my mouth I want a medicine by which it can be good.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

- use a soft toothbrush -- and brush properly! brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth. - floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque. - control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. - rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth. - stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums. - eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque. - try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a" water pick" to clear debris from around the gum line. - you may need deep cleaning along with surgical curettage or gum strengthening procedure. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person.

Hello sir / maam I have been taking soft drinks a lot now a days and now some white colour substances are above my teeth. Can you help and say how to overcome it and make teeth strong?

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

All individuals requires scaling (cleaning) to be done atleast once in 6 months to maintain our oral hygiene clean. Our toothbrush is not much finely designed to clean all the plaque and calculi in the interdental areas of the teeth, which is the area where most of the calculus accumulate much and has to be removed regularly using scalers by the dentist.
