Normally I breathe through only one nostril only. If one nostril opens then the other one automatically become blocked. The problem is transfers to other nostril automatically and no problem with unblocked nostril. Is it a problem or it is general health condition?

Diploma in Hospital Administration, MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Cases of blockage of nostril area stuffy or runny nose, mucus buildup, swollen nasal tissues, allergies, nasal polyps (noncancerous growths on the nasal passages or sinuses caused by inflammation of those areas), chronic sinusitis (a long-lasting sinus infection),tumors (usually benign, or noncancerous, masses that can cause congestion if they grow in the nasal passages), a deviated septum (the structure that separates the two sides of the nose is not located in the middle of the nose) Home remedies: Humidifiers that add moisture to the air may help to break up mucus and to soothe inflamed nasal passageways. However, if you have asthma, ask your doctor before using a humidifier. Propping your head up on pillows can also encourage mucus to flow out of your nasal passages. If right nostril is blocked, then sleep on your left lateral position.

Even Children Can Have Acidity

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Children who have continuing recurrence of cough and croup could be suffering from stomach acid reflux problems.

Croup or ‘Kali Khansi’, as it is called in local parlance, is recognized by a loud cough that often sounds like the barking of a seal. It can cause rapid or difficult breathing, and sometimes wheezing. Croup is thought to be caused by a virus, but reflux acidity has been suggested as a possible trigger.

In gastroesophageal reflux disease, stomach acid causes swelling and inflammation of the larynx, which narrows the airway. It can trigger more swelling with any kind of viral or respiratory infection.

Identifying children with gastroesophageal reflux disease could help treat and improve recurring croup. It is unusual for a child to have three or more bouts of croup over a short period of time. These children need to be evaluated.

The same is true for adults also. Patients with non responding asthma should be investigated for underlying acidity as the cause of acute asthma.
YOu can ask me privately in any doubts

My husband is having breathing problem.

MD - Consultant Physician, MBBS
General Physician,
Hello welcome to lybrate. There are two possibilities: 1. Bronchial asthma. 2. Cardiac issues. Breathlessness in night which awakens you from sleep is usually a sign of heart failure and is called as paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea (pnd). This pnd required evaluation. I would advise in such scenario: 1. Hemogram with esr 2. Ecg 3. Chest xray 4. Pulmonary function test 5. Echo if cardiac issues are found you would be treated accordingly, else you will be treated for asthma. Your doctor would evaluate you clinically. If you don't have severe chest congestion, he would treat you with anti-allergic drugs like levocetrizine and montelukast. He may add deriphylline or doxophylline for the chest spasms. If your chest congestion is very severe and there are wheezes and rhonchi's, then inhalers containing bronchi dilators like salbutamol would be required. You might also require short dose of steriod inhaler like budenoside. Share my opinion with your doctor before acting upon it. I hope it helps. Stay healthy.

If you are stable with the medicines continue with the same and consult your physician to decide whether it can be tapered. If you are still symptomatic i. E. Suffer from cough or breathlessness then you need to increase the dosage of your rotacaps. Keep a regular follow up with a chest physician near you.
