Today we will talk on lifestyle disorders and how we can handle it with Ayurveda. Our lifestyle has taken a lot of toll on our health giving rise to many diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity and also depression. So how can we make changes in our lifestyle to handle it. It is very simple.

  • We need to incorporate more walk in our daily life, eat less or eat in a smaller plate.
  • We need to include diet like seasonal vegetables and  fruits, have whole meals, have whole grains in your meals.
  • Let's incorporate yoga and pranayama.
  • Try to take maximum walk during the day.
  • Take the stairs in case if you are going to your office or your home.
  • Meditation plays imporatnat role in the improvement but sounds difficult. It's very difficult to meditate if you just start on your own but Ayurveda has a way to do it. It helps you through shirodhara. A stream of warm oil flows on to the center of the forehead. It's also known as a third eye. This stimulates the pituitary gland and gives you a very blissful experience. You should experience it in order to understand.
  • There are few medications available to help you in your weight loss. Medicines like Garcinia, Gogol, triphala, Nishod etc also help in losing weight and also helps in removing toxins from the body.
  • Last but not the least you need to grab good amount of sleep. A minimum of six to eight hours of sleep is essential for a sound health.Friends don't forget, you need not sleep during day time as it is totally contraindicated in Ayurveda. Namaste Friends! I am Dr. Surjeet Kaur Bawa practicing cosmetologist, skin aesthetics, trichologist and Ayurved Physician. Today we will talk about how corn is treated.

1st of all let us take a call on how is the corn formed. Corn is a small patch of skin, thickened skin, dead plug of skin which is found in feet sometimes, in hands too. What are the causes? Improper walking, uneven pressure on feet, ill fitting shoes etc. All this lead to friction of the feet thus thickening the underlining skin to sustain that pressure. What are the available treatments? Corn caps, acids, surgical excisions. Surgical excisions can offer relief but has big healing time and tedious post op care. Ayurveda offers immediate relief to the long standing pain by Agnikarma. Agni karma has been mentioned by Acharya Susrut, corn has been described as Kaddar in Ayurveda, it is treated by Shalaka Dahan.

This is a superior para-surgical procedure in management of not only corn but other health ailments also by pancha dhatu shalaka the tool for cauterization. This procedure doesn’t require any anesthesia, no hospitalization and minimum post op care. The patient goes on walking comfortably with reduced pain.

How is the treatment done. 1st the area is cleaned and dried, heated shalaka is then applied to the corn till the pain is sensed by the patient. Immediately the shalaka is removed and healing cream is applied, patient can comfortably walk back home. Now I will show you how a shalaka looks, (displaying) this is a shalaka, it’s a panchadhatu shalaka. This point is heated and applied to the corn. Very comfortable procedure and no post op care.

Ayurveda and Weight Loss

Ayurveda or 'science of life' believes in a holistic approach to health and well-being. Lifestyles have changed with more of processed and refined food, less of natural food, reduced exercise, increased sedentary patterns, etc. With this, there is a growing incidence of obesity – both the age of onset and the severity of progression.

Ayurveda attributes good health to a balance between three elements – vaata, kapha, and pitta. The imbalance between the three leads to ill health, including obesity.

Weight loss, according to Ayurveda, includes a holistic approach with lifestyle changes, dietary changes, yoga asanas, and some Ayurvedic remedies.

Dietary changes: A number of herbs are used, which reduce fat accumulation, reduce triglyceride levels, improve insulin resistance, and improve fat-waist ratios.

  1. Have a lukewarm mixture of black pepper, lime juice, and honey first thing in the morning.
  2. Boil cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and fennel seeds; strain and drink throughout the day.
  3. Have honey mixed with cinnamon powder.
  4. Fight obesity with herbs like ginger, triphala, licorice, guggul, and wild gooseberries.
  5. Avoid whites like rice, salt, sugar, and refined flours like maida.
  6. Eat seasonal and natural vegetables and fruits along with dairy products.
  7. Ensure adequate hydration of about three liters per day to get rid of toxins, which are formed during weight loss.

Massage: Ayurveda recommends specific massages aimed at weight loss.

  1. Abhyangam: This massage done using warm herbal oils helps in revitalizing and reenergizing the body. It is a great detox method by improving blood and lymphatic circulation, eliminating wastes, and improving nutritional supply at a cellular level.
  2. Udwarthanam: This is a special dry massage using dry herbal powders and vigorous strokes/movements. They are believed to help in breaking up fatty deposits, improving blood circulation, and improving overall muscle tone.

Ayurvedic herbs:

  1. Ginger: Helps in cholesterol metabolism, reduces fat accumulation, and controls fatty acid oxidation
  2. Triphala: Helps to maintain a lean body mass, prevents fat accumulation, and helps weight loss
  3. Garcinia cambogia: Stops fat accumulation, prevents visceral fat formation and alters fat synthesis
  4. Guggul or Commiphora: Another fat burner, which reduces total cholesterol and triglycerides and improves levels of good cholesterol
  5. Licorice or Glycyrrhiza Glabra: Has phyto-chemicals and flavonoids, which reduce triglyceride levels.
  6. Kalonji: Reduces waist-hip ratios and body mass index

Lifestyle changes:

  1. Include yoga asanas like Ardha Chandraasana, which are aimed at weight loss. Any yoga is useful in detox and improving metabolism.
  2. Quit smoking.
  3. Quit or consume alcohol only in moderation.
  4. Follow a regular sleep routine of 7 to 8 hours.
  5. Maintain adequate hydration.

All these will together help in losing weight, maintaining weight at a desired level and preventing unnecessary weight gain. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Health Tips for Women Over 40!!

The health and beauty habits we had during our 20s and 30s were fairly simple. We just had to do the basics - wear sunscreen, exercise, and eat healthy foods. During that period of our lives, our bodies were resilient. We could stay up late, have the occasional unhealthy meal, and skip a couple of days at the gym without a problem.

However, by the time you hit your 40s, your body begins to change. Since turning 40, your body parts want to connect with the floor. Not only that, your stomach is sensitive, You can’t stay up past 10 p.m., and if you don’t exercise regularly, again, the whole operation starts inching closer to the floor.

Keeping ourselves healthy and beautiful post-40 takes work. So here are some tips to keep your post-40 body at its most lovely.

  1. Dietary requirements for women: Until the age of 40, a woman can get away with being a bit naughty about her diet. However, after the age of 40, the important hormones in her body are more imbalanced than before. This imbalance is further accentuated if her lifestyle and nutrition is not managed wisely. According to Ayurveda, a woman over the age 40 has to control her diet aggressively. This can be done by reducing fats and carbohydrates while ensuring the body is nourished by fibers and sufficient amount of vitamins, calcium, minerals and protein.
  2. Take Your Vitamins: Taking vitamins after 40 is the difference between having healthy looking skin and glossy hair, and having sallow skin and hair that is a dry mess. So take your vitamins - just like when you were a kid!
  3. Exercise Daily: When you were younger, your body didn’t show the effects of a couple of days of missed exercise. However, when you are in our 40s, working out is critical. Your body quickly loses its agility if you don’t exercise it daily. You don’t have to spend 2 hours a day at an expensive gym. Have a regular exercise regime that you can do consistently is the best gift that you can give yourself.
  4. Take Care of Your Feet and Back: Your feet and back do big jobs for you. They support your weight and make walking easier or harder, depending on your health condition. For those of us who don’t live in warm climates, we tend to neglect your feet during the winter months because they aren’t visible. However, caring for your feet all year round, including regular pedicures, at home or at the salon, is important to keeping your feet healthy. And our back health is critical. Back injuries do not heal quickly, especially as we age. Make sure to stretch your back daily, sleep on a firm bed, and take care when lifting either children or furniture. Your back will thank you.
  5. Sleep!: Gone are the days when you can stay up until 2 a.m., and still look great the next day. These days, if you stay up until 2 a.m., the next morning, you look like you are 90. After 40, sleep makes a big difference in one’s appearance. Even after a quick 10-minute nap, you look refreshed and about 5 years younger. So make your sleep a priority.

Yes, taking care of our post-40 bodies is work. Taking care of your body is a full-time job! Well, it may not be that bad in your 40s, but caring for your bodies as you get older requires some effort. Calcium - 10 Excellent Non - Dairy Foods

The key to good bone health are calcium and vitamin D, both of which are stored in the bones. Along with strengthening of bones, calcium has been recently shown to play a major role in weight loss as well. Calcium is one of the essential minerals that are required for several important life processes. The deficiency of calcium can cause complications such as brittle and fragile bones that are more susceptible to fractures and diseases. Hence it is essential to consume a certain amount of food that is rich in calcium everyday for good health. Adults need about 1,000 milligrams a day—that's a little more than three 8-ounce glasses of milk—but what if you're vegan, lactose intolerant, or just don't like the taste of dairy products?

Here's a little-known fact: there are lots of non-dairy foods with calcium. Here are 10 of them:

  1. Broccoli (Calcium content: 47 milligrams in 100 gms) - Believe it or not, in addition to calcium this cruciferous veggie contains nearly twice the vitamin C of an orange. Research also shows that diets high in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli may be linked to a lower risk of certain types of cancer, including colon and bladder cancer. 
  2. Kale (Calcium content: 150 milligrams in 100 gms) - This superfood has it all: it racks up just 30 calories per serving, provides a day's worth of vitamin C, and twice the recommended daily intake of vitamin A, not to mention that 101 milligrams of calcium per serving. It also provides a hefty dose of vitamin K, a nutrient that helps your blood clot. Without it, you wouldn't stop bleeding when you cut or bruise yourself. 
  3. Figs (Calcium content: 26 milligrams in 100 gms) - Bite into a dried fig, and you'll think you're indulging in a super-sweet and sticky dessert, when in fact you're chowing down on a fiber- and potassium-packed fruit. Figs also supply you with magnesium, a nutrient the body uses in more than 300 biomechanical reactions, such as maintaining muscle function, keeping your heart rhythm steady, and strengthening your bones. 
  4. Oranges (Calcium content: 40 milligrams in 100 gms) - You know oranges for their immune-boosting vitamin C content, but they're also low in calories and brimming with antioxidants. 
  5. Beans (Calcium content: 442 milligrams in 100 gms) - These meaty little guys are rich in fiber, protein, and iron, and they're also one of the best nutritional sources of potassium. Additionally, they contain resistant starch, a healthy carb that boosts metabolism. 
  6. Okra (Calcium content: 82 milligrams in 100 gms) - Okra contains constipation-fighting insoluble fiber, as well as vitamin B6 and folate. And don't write off this veggie if you've only ever had a boiled, slimy version; oven-roasting, sautéing, or grilling bring out the best flavor. 
  7. Tofu (Calcium content: 350 milligrams in 100 gms) - You know tofu as a vegetarian source of protein. Turns out it's also a great source of calcium. Tofu is incredibly versatile—it takes on the flavor of whatever else you're cooking with it. 
  8. Almonds (Calcium content: 264 milligrams in 100 gms) - Almonds, which are among the best nuts for your health, contain about 12% of your necessary daily protein, and are rich in vitamin E and potassium. And although they are fattening, it's the good kind of fat that helps lower your bad cholesterol levels as long as you enjoy them in moderation. 
  9. Drumsticks (Calcium content: 185 milligrams in 100 gms) - The green vegetable features large quantities of iron, Vitamins as well as calcium. Drumsticks are recognized to offer healthy and strong bones and are also believed to purify the blood. Drumstick leaves particularly are said to be the blood purifier. Good evening. I'm kavitha I have a problem of severe hair fall n I've noticed baldness in my head n I'm really worried I have done permanent straightening twice n 1st was a few years ago n second was last year January n once I got highlights done in last years August. But I've noticed baldness from a few months ago only n my mom also has baldness but she never got done anything. please do tell me the solution for this I'm really very worried for my hair plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Regular oiling and some supplements for hair depending upon your health conditions can be prescribed for good hair. since you are young - I feel you will have good results. Causes and Treatment for Corn on Skin

Namaste Friends! I am Dr. Surjeet Kaur Bawa practicing cosmetologist, skin aesthetics, trichologist and Ayurved Physician. Today we will talk about how corn is treated.

1st of all let us take a call on how is the corn formed. Corn is a small patch of skin, thickened skin, dead plug of skin which is found in feet sometimes, in hands too. What are the causes? Improper walking, uneven pressure on feet, ill fitting shoes etc. All this lead to friction of the feet thus thickening the underlining skin to sustain that pressure. What are the available treatments? Corn caps, acids, surgical excisions. Surgical excisions can offer relief but has big healing time and tedious post op care. Ayurveda offers immediate relief to the long standing pain by Agnikarma. Agni karma has been mentioned by Acharya Susrut, corn has been described as Kaddar in Ayurveda, it is treated by Shalaka Dahan.

This is a superior para-surgical procedure in management of not only corn but other health ailments also by pancha dhatu shalaka the tool for cauterization. This procedure doesn’t require any anesthesia, no hospitalization and minimum post op care. The patient goes on walking comfortably with reduced pain.

How is the treatment done. 1st the area is cleaned and dried, heated shalaka is then applied to the corn till the pain is sensed by the patient. Immediately the shalaka is removed and healing cream is applied, patient can comfortably walk back home. Now I will show you how a shalaka looks, (displaying) this is a shalaka, it’s a panchadhatu shalaka. This point is heated and applied to the corn. Very comfortable procedure and no post op care.

Hair Loss - 9 Reasons Behind it

Hair loss or Alopecia areata is a condition characterized by loss of hair from the scalp and other parts of the body that have hair over a prolonged period of time. Recent research states that losing 100 strands of hair a day is normal. But anything in excess indicates that you might be suffering from this embarrassing condition. Experiencing recurring episodes of hair loss can end up affecting one’s self-confidence, and hence, any sphere of his personal life as well.

What causes hair loss?

  1. Over 95% of hair loss occurs due to hereditary factors coming into play. A family history of this condition can exacerbate one’s risks of developing the condition.
  2. Hair loss can also occur if you have been exposed to increased stress levels of late. Temporary hair loss is also observed in people suffering from mental stress or trauma resulting from an incident, may be the death of a loved one or any other incident that might have brought on shock and stress on the concerned person.
  3. Hair loss can also result from chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Also, certain medications used to combat cancer, depression, heart disorder, birth control and arthritis (know more about arthritis problem) might also result in significant loss of hair.
  4. Hair loss can occur as a result of thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
  5. Hair loss might also be the result of an auto-immune disorder known as ‘Alopecia Areata’ that results in bald spot formation around the scalp, beard, and eyebrows.
  6. Trichotillomania (a mental condition wherein a person pulls out hair from the scalp, almost unconsciously) can lead to hair loss as well.
  7. Hair loss can also occur as a result of excessive experimentation with your hair. This can include using permanent hair straightening devices, developing curls or tight braids, ponytails, etc.
  8. Hormonal imbalances or change, noticeable mostly during pregnancy or at the onset of menopause can be triggers of hair loss as well.
  9. Ringworm infection can also result in hair loss by damaging the skin of the scalp and hair. However, hair loss tends to get better once the infection is treated.

When I wash my face with soap it gets very dry. I change my soap to mild one but still I get dryness. Also I have oily skin. When I use cream for dryness my skin get too oily. Cream remain on the skin surface and not get absorbed. What is this problem and how to prevent. I do not want to use cream because it produce oil.

Soap is not recommended for face. Always use a gentle cleanser for washing your face. Use a mild moisturising cream and a sunscreen with spf 30 will help you.
