Hi lybrate-user. This problem is due to irritation and inadequate nutrition of the brain. So follow few basic things 1) drink only 100-150 ml of water during meals . 2) don’t drink water one hour before meals and one hour after meal 3) avoid oily, spicy, salty, junk, fast, fermented and stale foods 4) avoid coffee and tea 5) try to sleep upto 10.30 pm 6) do anuloma viloma pranayam regularly early in the morning A) eat 30-40 black currants and 1 tsf of jaggery during meals B) take 250 ml of fresh butter milk during meals. C) instill 3-4 drops of CHANDANADI TAILA in each nostril at the time of sleeping Do all these things for 15 days. It gives you good result. THANKS.

Sometimes I became very obsessive towards masturbation and smoking. It becomes compulsion especially masturbation. It affects me very much. Right now I am preparing for exams. First of all determine to set yourself right. Start light, spiceless or little spice only good. Palliative herbals and satvic food is the answer but meditation, yoga, deep breathing will synergise the effects manifold. Socialize yourself. Read good literature. Hear music. Concentration will start coming quickly with our nervine and brain toner package which have, among others, jatamansi, brahmi, shankhpushpi etc. These also have palliative effect and you will be able to control masturbation.

I am facing some issues with my memory. Sometimes I can not remember my friend, s name. Sometimes while trying to recall something from my memory I feel some kind of pain in my head. Is that the symptoms of memory loss or Alzheimer's disease?

Hello, I am having this psychological/neurological problem since 2011 after I met with a serious accident which caused internal-bleeding and blood clotted in my brain but it got fine with medication and no surgery was required. Then my doctor prescribed me 'Epsolin tablets for around a year. The composition of tablet is Phenytoin Sodium (100 mg). To be frank, It took me 8-9 months to fully recover physically and mentally. Then during that time-period I faced this problem which is explained below: It happens for one full day. On that day, When I wake up in the morning I am totally depressed and my head feels heavy. Thoughts of death come to mind so often. Then a memory blinks in my mind which is always related to some adventurous nightmare I saw previously. When this memory blinks, my heartbeat fastens and feel dizzy for 9-10 seconds and then recover. This keeps happening until I go to sleep at night and wake up next morning. It totally takes me two days to fully recover from this state of mind. Facts: 1. Intensity of the effect which occurs after blink is reduced since starting. 2. Frequency of the problem is also less now. As I mentioned in the description it happens once a month now. 3. Nightmares which blinks in my mind are always those which I saw on the same day previously. It is full of adrenaline rush for example someone chasing me, hanging from an aeroplane etc. 4. I have never explained this to anyone. I tried once but none could understand it. I couldn't even find out that whom should I consult. 5. I have tried sleeping during day to see if it goes away after that nap but it was not working. It still remains until night sleep. Please help me. Tell me something. I am so confused. Thank you in advance.

These are all symptoms of anxiety, which might even be related to your handling of the stress of the accident. Try simple methods like yoga and meditation, and a daily walk to soothe your mynd and exercise your body. If this fails, meet a Psychiatrist.

One of my family member is addicted with smoking and is unable to relax. How can he quit smoking?

Whoever it is, this much is clear, whoever has the smoking habit has to want to stop the habit himself, first. Anybody else that wants to stop someone else’s habit, even if you use force, cannot succeed in the long run until the person himself wants to stop it. Now the person will want to stop the habit as soon as he has ‘Hit Rock Bottom’ when he is really ready to give it up and wants help and support. You can keep encouraging and warning him about the damage he is causing to himself and that the effects may be visible much later. Initially he needs to meet with a counselor who will encourage him to give up the habit by pointing out the imminence of ‘Hitting Rock Bottom’, and some responsive candidates respond with a serious motivation. Once that has been achieved he can be taken for detoxification either to a hospital or to a rehabilitation center and he can then follow their schedule for complete cessation. If it is not too serious, he can cope with counseling itself to sufficiently give it up.

You are right. Normally we don't stammer when we sing or say a poem or even if we act like some one or imitate some body. As you are conscious about how or the way you speak not what you are speaking. Go to a experienced speech therapist.

You will have to review your study schedule. That is causing enough stress to give you a headache. Hard work and no sleep is a recipe for poor health and concentration. At 16 years if you do so much for your studies and so little for your wellbeing, then you can expect to suffer more serious problems over time. This does not make any sense. So plan your day properly and do everything in moderation.

By blaming yourself only your problem will not solve.every human commits mistakes it totally depends upon you whether you have taken any lesson from this or not,but you are analysing it shows that you are on right path .you can take help of any counsellor regarding this.if you need my help i will be glad to help you.we can show you the way only but only you can go on that path.remember even god helps those who help themselves.forget whatever happened we cannot change the past,what we can change is the present so that our future should be good.your concern is showing that you are ready to achieve your goal just be confident.do some yoga, and meditation it will increase your concentration and make parts of the subjects and try to complete in time for example 2 topics for today so that you will not feel burden and enjoy study.good luck.

Dear Lybrate User, It appears that your friend has some suppressed negative emotions. When such emotions are suppressed for a long time, they manifest in form of physical pain but one cannot find out any reason for such pain. This is known as "Psychosomatic Pain" May be, your friend is having this condition. Please ask him to seek help from a Counsellor. The Counsellor will help your friend to give an outlet to his suppressed emotions. The Counselling process will also help your friend to understand what is happening to him, what is causing all this and how he can cope up with this situation. Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. You must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. If the task is boring, it is natural that that person will sleep or feel sleepy. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Take care.

Inability to speak may be due to various reasons. She needs to be investigated thoroughly to know the cause. It could be related to cochlear abnormality or poor development of brain; needs assessment for the same.

Hi. I am addicted to smoking, I have picked it up since last 3 years and till now continuing. I know its not good for heart as well as lungs. Please give your opinion about how do I quit this habit?

Yes, it is very harmful for more than the damage to heart and lungs. You must quit your smoking completely and you must do it now, seriously. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. But don’t fool yourself any smoking is harmful, and you need to seriously get on with quitting it completely and immediately.

What you are going through is greaving. Loosing loved one is not easy to deal with emotionally. I am sorry for your loss. When you are greaving, your mind is continuously engaged in sad and disturbing thoughts and feeling of loss and perhaps guilt. When sadness over powers you it is difficult to feel any other feelings. Even feeling happy makes you feel guilty and uneasy. Slow but effective way to over cone sadness is to engage yourself in some neutral activities such as cleaning. Walking or readjng a light book. Once you try that for few days you may be ready for following things. There are few things I would like you to try. 1. When you feel sad. Feel the feeling of sadness fully. You may close your eyes and let that sadness flow through your mind and body. If tears flow let them flow. Cry it out. Feeling what you feel fully and totally is healing. Once you feel your sadness fully. You might feel the lightness in your heart. Feel that too and say out loud. How wonderful! and engage your mind remembering some good qualities and good times you spent with the person you are missing. 2. Regular simple breath awareness meditation also help manage your loss. 3. You may also l write daily 3 to 5 things you are grateful to every morning. These things could be as simple as having a bed to sleep and food to eat. Affirm what you write and add new thing in your list for 7 to10 days. If you are not feeling any change over next 2 weeks or if you lack motivation to initiate and maintain above activities hope this helps wishing you very best.

If your sex related thing is masturbation, it is the guilt that unnecessarily plagues youngsters. There is nothing the matter with masturbation as long as you do not get addicted to it. Otherwise, too, it can cause a lot of distraction. So everything in moderation and you will be fine. In the meantime do some of these recommendations very faithfully: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food. You may also include these noted foods that are good for your brain health: Brain-Friendly Foods MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. But the MIND approach “specifically includes foods and nutrients that medical literature and data show to be good for the brain, such as berries,” says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology at Rush University Medical Center. You eat things from these 10 food groups: •Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week •Other vegetables: At least one a day •Nuts: Five servings a week •Berries: Two or more servings a week •Beans: At least three servings a week •Whole grains: Three or more servings a day •Fish: Once a week •Poultry (like chicken or turkey): Two times a week •Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking oil. •Wine: One glass a day You avoid: •Red meat: Less than four servings a week •Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily •Cheese: Less than one serving a week •Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week •Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week.

30kg in 4 months is a rapid gain. Before starting any specific treatment, first reduce your weight. Do regular physical exercise. Avoid junk foods.
