Effects of Stress on Sex Life!

Stress can take a toll on your health in more ways than one and your sexual health is greatly and adversely impacted by stress. Stress can take a toll on the emotional relationship you share with your partner and also your own physical health, thus resulting in a hampered sex life.

Stress and Our Libido:

By now, we know that hormones affect our bodies in numerous ways from childhood to adolescence, pregnancy, menopause and beyond. Cortisol is one of the hormones produced by stress, and you might have heard of it if you’ve ever seen those late night diet pill commercials with the image of the pixelated woman gaining weight in her abdomen. Our bodies need this hormone, but in small doses for short bursts of time. If elevated levels of Cortisol are being produced for a prolonged period of time, they suppress our sex hormones. Lower quantity of sex hormones equals lower libido.

Impact of Stress on Sex:

  1. Stress takes a toll on libido.
  2. Low levels of libido imply lesser secretion of sex hormones, thus, affecting your sex life.
  3. Stress can interfere with your fertility, ovulation and sperm count.
  4. Stress can cause a shift in the hormones. In women, the change in hormones manifests in the form of an irregular ovulatory cycle.
  5. Loss of intimacy.
  6. Being under stress constantly can lead to anger, emotional outbursts, depression and loss of intimacy with your partner; thus affecting your sexual relations.
  7. Stress also affects your body image negatively, thus leading to unpleasant and bad sex.

How to rejuvenate your sex life?

  1. Communicate your feelings:  Many a times, communicating and sharing your feelings, desires and anxiety with your partner might be all that you need to rejuvenate your sex life.
  2. Regular exercise and proper sleep: 20-30 minutes of body work out or a session of yoga everyday helps you to de-stress. A proper eight-hour sleep cycle will also go a long way in de-stressing you.
  3. Supplements to boost your libido and energy: Taking multivitamins, minerals, zinc and other supplements helps to boost your energy levels and libido, thus allowing you to enjoy your sex life to the fullest.
  4. Set the mood correctly: Set the right mood before your intimate sessions; with some soothing music, aromatic fragrance and dim lights. This can and will enhance your sex life by promoting relaxation, happiness and overall emotional well being. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist and ask a free question.

escitalopram is an antidepressant. Amisulpiride on the other hand is an antipsychotic drug. So your comparison is not fair.

Globus pharangis (also known as globus hystericus commonly referred to as having a "lump in throat feeling"), is the persistent sensation of having phlegm, a pill or some other sort of obstruction in the throat when there is none. Swallowing can be performed normally, so it is not a true case of dysphagia, but it can become quite irritating. One may also feel mild chest pain or even severe pain with a clicking sensation when swallowing. If you have consulted an ENT specialist/physician and there have been no diagnosis or relief in symptoms, please consult a psychiatrist.

Dear user. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.

It depends on the nature and severity of lung damage. If it is early and reversible may be in 6 months to 12 years. After permanent severe damage the damaged lung part cant be reversed, but by stopping smoking further damage can be prevented. All the best

Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. Clinical depression or depressive disorder is a neurochemical disorder. Clinical depression is usually treated with a combination of psychiatric medicines, psychotherapy, life style changes, meditation and exercise. I hope you are undergoing psychiatric treatment, otherwise, please approach a psychiatrist. Once you make the necessary amendments in your life with the help of the above said therapies and life style changes, learn how to manage the depressive episodes without medicines and learn to relax, the medicines can be weaned off over a period of one year. The best option for you is to undergo counseling and depression related therapy. Take care.

Among your understandable symptoms, you seem to have an emotionally labile mood where you tend to lose control on your anger, feel depressed for things that don't go your way and you attempted self harm twice. All these symptoms suggest a form of personality disorder or a mood disorder which needs a complete evaluation for a definitive diagnosis and management. Please consult a psychiatrist preferably with a family member for further management.

Dear lybrate user, if you wish to lose weight, you need to modify you lifestyle and food habits. If health is important for you, then please find out some time slot in your tight schedule which you can devote to either yoga, jogging, cycling or going to the gym. It may appear difficult to find time for this, but you need to somehow find time for this. May be get up earlier than your usual time or work out at night. Once you start your physical exercise, you will realize that it will help you in losing weight and at the same time it acts as a stress buster. It is very important to have healthy food and on time. If home food is not possible find out some other options like getting tiffin delivered at office from online catering services or any mess or find a place near your office where you will get a square meal. You may also consult a nutritionist.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Physical health and mental health are inter dependent. They are related to each other. You should learn to be always happy, thereby providing an attitudinal change to even your body. Physical exercise, entertainment, games etc can boost your body immunity and thereby mind also will be happy. This also ensures your appetite and therefore you eat well. All these things together will improve your overall health. Take care.

What Is Stress ?

LCPS, BAM&S
General Physician, Pune
What Is Stress ?

Stress is not mental tension. Stress is burden on your body and mind. When it is within your capacity, it improves your system. You feel energetic. When it outgrows your capacity, you feel tired and weak. Burden could be physical, like working day and night without rest. Or it could be financial burden. An impending wedding or hospitalization can be a cause of your stress. If you are hiding something in the mind for a long time, it becomes a cause of your stress.

Work related stress is usually overworking beyond 8 hours. Continuous focussing on job cause mental fatigue. Young persons don't feel it. So they overlook it and continue working. Initial first symptoms could be heartburn, indigestion, headache, bodyache or infections. Later you have high blood pressure, kidney stone, gout, skin diseases. Still later thyroid, diabetes, pcod, liver disease raise their head.

Stress is the root cause. If it is not treated, your disease will keep on increasing and your dependence on medicine will continue.
