Generally prostate related problems causing urinary dysfunction are diseases of elderly. You can get your ultrasound kub and urine analysis done to rule out cause of outlet obstruction it may be a stone or some kind of inflammation. If above are normal you can get psa checked. If it is prostatitis it can be treated by antibiotics under supervision of nephrologist, don't worry.

My grandpa has 4th stage lung cancer, he was diagnosed with it by Feb 2015, he is treated by around 10 radiation and two cycles of chemotherapy and third cycle is going on. Can some one guide me for further alternative treatment? Is there any new research or treatment for lung cancer? I want to mention that his physical condition is good and no much side effects of chemotherapy also. Also he has smoked in past. I am really thankful if someone guide me further.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, fourth stage cancer lung means it has spread to other organs and line of treatment is more towards palliation. Treatment also depends on histopathology and immunohistochemistry, if EGFR mutations positive then some oral treatment can also be tried. Please continue chemotherapy if his general condition is good.

All About Melanoma

All About Melanoma

Melanoma is a condition which mainly indicates a severe malfunction of the melanocytes or the melanin producing cells of the body. These cells are responsible for giving you your skin colour, tone and complexion. Usually, a person suffering from melanoma will have many normal and irregular moles as well as melanoma in the eye and digestive tracts too.

Some general facts on melanoma are mentioned below:

  1. Melanoma is common in young women and causes many deaths.

  2. More than one million new instances of skin cancer or melanoma are analyzed every year.

  3. There has been a 2000% increase in rate of melanoma since the year 1930. One out of fifty get affected by this cancer.

  4. There has been a high rise in the rate of melanoma from 1970 to 2008. There has been an 800% increase in young women and 400% increase in case of similar aged men.

  5. Early recognition makes melanoma treatable. It is screened for growth very minimally.

Primary causes Melanoma may be caused primarily due to these causes:

The most primary cause of melanoma is ultraviolet light (UV) in people with a low level of skin pigment. The UV light might be from either the sun or from different sources, for example, tanning devices. Around 25% of cases occur from or in the form of moles.

The individuals who work on airplanes seem to have an expanded danger, due to more contact with UV rays.

Ultraviolet UV light of wavelengths between 315 - 280 nm from the sun react with the skin cell DNA and result in a kind of direct DNA harm called cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs).

In order to stay away or avoid melanoma, you should:

  1. Avoid the sun at peak hours.

  2. Examine your skin at times for some kind of change.

  3. Keep away from tanning salons. Melanoma is a dangerous form of cancer and causes a lot of deaths. You should stay away from anything that causes melanoma. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Oncologist,
Dear there is a medicine for a type of blood cancer known as chronic myeloid leukemia (cml). The name of the drug is imatinib mesylate (not imatenef as seen in those messages). It has improved the chance of survival for this group of patients by a big margin compared to previous treatments. Regards

Do cancers are somehow related to heredity as I have seen many cases where cancer patients parent or uncle / some family member was also affected by same disease.

MS ( General Surgery)
Oncologist, Mandsaur
Some types of cancer run in certain families, but most cancers are not clearly linked to the genes we inherit from our parents. In this section you can learn more about the complex links between genes and cancer, as well as genetic testing and how it is used.

pancreatic cancers can cause obstruction to biliary passage and cause jaundice for which stent if placed to secure passage further treatment will depend on his general conditions and radiological extent of disease. chemotherapy can start as soon as his bilirubin is within normal limit and general conditions improved.

I have been operated for tongue cancer 2 weeks back which is operated with neck too. So report say my neck is now cure but my tongue report is like this. Distance of tumor frm base 0.6cm Lymph vascular invasion: present Final impression: invasive squamous cell carcinoma, conventional, grade 2, right lateral border of tongue, pT1 pN0. So whats next now. Doctor say for a radio therapy or operation which is best and tell me whats next step now?

Oncologist, Mumbai
Though pt1, n0 is stage one cancer which after your surgery is now completely removed. As far as post operative radiation is concerned, it is given to reduce the chances of recurrence. However according to the present knowledge we have there is no advantage of radiation in stage 1 cancer. Having said that, there is a risk factor called lymph vascular invasion which is present in your case and sometimes in some cases, there is also something called perineural invasion present. Moreover in head neck cancers tongue malignancy is the most tricky. Hence some oncologist prefer radiation after surgery.

What is cancer. Symptoms of cancer. How can it be treated. Why it is so dangerous disease. How can we prevent this disease.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, cancer is abnormal uncontrolled growth of cells caused by some faulty gene which control the growth of cells. This faulty gene may be due to some injury to genes by chemicals, tobacco, radiation exposure, adulterated food, viruses, pollution, faulty food habits Etc. Currently available treatment modalities are surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy etc depending on organ affected, and stage of the disease. We can prevent by avoiding known carcinogens, healthy eating habits, exercise and go for regular health screening. this disease is dangerous due to unpredictable nature and nature of relapse post treatment.

My Grand mother died because of breast cancer. I was obese since 15 years and was PCOd. Due to joint pain, sciatica and spine pain, I was not able to exercise. I have recently reduced 31 kgs. But I still feel the pain in my breast. On ultrasound nothing came out. Do I suspect something wrong. After reduction of 31 kgs my periods are normal.

MBBS, DNB ( Radiation Oncology)
Oncologist, Mumbai
Dear Ms.Subhalaxmi I must first congragulate u for loosing so much weight. Its an achievement indeed. If the ultrasound is normal u dont need to worry. Sometimes there is pain in the breast due to hormonal cycle with periods. You can again do a followup after 3 to 6 months with a doctor and if needed an ultrasound. There are some medicines which relieves such pain as well. You can ask your doctor to prescribe you one. All the best!

My father is suffering from colon cancer and it is in fourth stage what best we can do and what are the survival chances his age is 84 year please guide me properly and tell me everything clearly With High regard.

MCh - Surgical Oncology, FEBS - Fellow of European Board of Surgical Oncology
Oncologist, Navi Mumbai
Hello lybrate-user, sorry to hear about your father. He is 84 and has lived over the average expectancy of an individual. At this point we should consider quality of life rather than cure for cancer since he is old and cancer has spread. If he is symptomatic for Colon cancer he should be operated for the colonic mass to give him relief. Laparoscopic surgery or Robotic surgery is preferable. Even a simple stoma can be done to allay symptoms. However, that would mean daily toilet cleaning for relatives and self. Regards.
