For your kind information paranasal sinuses are a group of four paired air-filled spaces that surround the 1. Nasal cavity i.e. cheek region (maxillary sinuses), 2. Above the eyes (frontal sinuses), 3. Between the eyes (ethmoidal sinuses), and 4. behind the ethmoids (sphenoidal sinuses). The sinuses are named for the facial bones in which they are located. You maybe suffering from allergic rhinitis and pharyngitis. You need to avoid the cause of your allergies and also take anti allergy medications. Please consult for prescription. If you have an infection and have fever you will need to do a course of antibiotics. For now do warm saline gargle and steam inhalation 3 times a day.

My friend' s back throat got damaged from inside when pierced with hard stick and started bleeding. But bleeding stopped after some time. After 6 days also, it hurts while swallowing. Please do help

MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Aurangabad
Hello . Uncomplicated throat injuries usually heal well. Your friend needs a clinical examination of throat, if there is no secondary infection, it will heal within few weeks. Pain during swallowing may last till the wound heals completely ( usually takes about 2-4 weeks to heal ). Pain killers may be used after consulting ent physician. Regards.

I am suffering from sinus since 3 months. I used many medicines but there is no cure. So please root out this problem.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
First thing you should go for ct scan of nose and sinus than treatment is based on grade of the sinus, if it is grade iv than no treatment is available or effective unless you get this corrected by surgery, surgery will give you nearly 80-90%. Than remaining you can treat with homeopathy than it will help. The bone of he nose gets deviated this leads to nose breathing problem if a person suffering from nasal obstruction along with sinusits and mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusitis. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopic ally. But if the sinusitis is grade ii or iii than there are possibility that you may get relief from symptoms.

I usually do not get any complaints of my snoring, but since last week or so, ever since I migrated to a new place, apparently I am snoring. Are there any specific causes for this and how can it be cured?

BAMS
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Hi, snoring occurs when a person is not able to move the air through the nose and throat while sleeping. As aresult, the air vibrates the surrounding tissues and causes snoring sound. Causes of snoring are obesity, nasal problems such as blocked nose due to nasal septal deviation, polyp or sinusitis, smoking, consumption of tobacco, intake of alcohol, sleeping pills, relaxed throat muscles in elderly and tonsillitis in children. Please follow these tips to stop snoring: - reduce your weight if you are obese. - perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - sleep on sides instead on back. - elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - clear the nose before going to bed. - establish regular sleep pattern. - keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in the nose and throat. - perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - anti snoring appliances can also be used.

I have deviated nasal septum (Dns) So doctor has suggested me 3 surgeries. What should be the combined cost of these 3 surgeries? 1.Septplasty 2.Radiofrequency nasal Turbinate reduction 3.Balloon dilatation of Sinuses And is it necessary to do all the 3 surgeries? And do I need to stay for 3 days in the hospital for these surgeries? Is it possible that in a day I can go home?

MBBS, Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO)
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
The problem is that Indian Insurance Companies have not woken up to the fact that medical technologies have come a long way in the last 60 years! Thus they insist on 24 hour hospitalisation for any surgery! If I were to do the above surgeries, and you were a cash paying patient, I would discharge you within 3 hours after surgery! If it was balloon sinuplasty along with RF assistedTurbinate Reduction, I can do it as an Office case! Under local anaesthesia in my clinic chambers, so no OT required! and you can go back to work immediately after the surgical procedure! However Septoplasty does require hospitalisation but can be discharged within 3 hours of surgery, however it also required daily follow-ups at my clinic to clean the nose so as to keep you comfortable for about 1 week.

How effectively can" appliances" be used to control snoring (i. E. Nasal strips or that plastic thing that dilates nostrils to open nasal passages)?

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Ahmedabad
Most of the time they are ineffective because the sound and vibration of snoring arise from back part of the nose and throat.
