Red eye has many causes. You have to see if it is associated with blurring of vision, pain, discharge and other complaints. But commonly its allergic or infective in origin ie allergic or infective conjunctivitis. Which has simple treatment protocol. But still its wise to see an ophthalmologist for a thorough slit lamp examination to rule out other differentials for red eye.

An immunoglobulin E (IgE) test measures the blood level of IgE, one of the five subclasses of antibodies. Antibodies are proteins made by the immune system that attack antigens, such as bacteria, viruses, and allergens. IgE antibodies are found in the lungs, skin, and mucous membranes. An allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) blood test is done to check whether a person is allergic to a particular substance. An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system overreacts to something, often in the environment, that's harmless to most people. Variations in the upper limit of normal total serum IgE have been reported: they can range from 150 to 1,000 UI/ml; but the usually accepted upper limit is between 150 and 300 UI/ml.

Blurry Vision - Possible Things That Can Be Behind It!

Blurry Vision - Possible Things That Can Be Behind It!

Blurred vision is most often a sign that you need corrective spectacles for near sightedness, far sightedness or astigmatism but it could also be a sign of a bigger problem including eye diseases or neurological problems. Blurred vision involves the loss of sharpness of vision and objects appearing hazy and out of focus. It can affect one eye or both eyes simultaneously.

Whatever be your age, it is a good idea to consult a doctor as you begin to experience a blurred vision. To measure the extent of your vision problem, a doctor will do a comprehensive eye examination including spatial contrast sensitivity and a standard eye chart test.

Some of the factors that trigger blurred vision are:

  1. Myopia or nearsightedness
  2. Hypermetropia or farsightedness
  3. Astigmatism caused by an irregularly shaped cornea
  4. Presbyopia - the diminished ability to focus on objects due to the hardening of the lens in the eye
  5. Dry eyes or the lack of lubrication on the surface of the eyes
  6. Hormonal changes during pregnancy
  7. Migraine headaches
  8. Temporary floaters in the eye formed by the liquefying of the gel in the eyes
  9. After effects of Lasik surgery
  10. Eye drops or medication
  11. Overuse of contact lenses
  12. Diabetes

Blurred vision can also be a symptom of a serious condition such as cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cardiovascular diseases.

Treatment for blurred vision depends on the factors triggering it. Wearing corrective glasses can cure blurred vision caused by myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. These conditions can also be treated by Lasik surgery. For blurred vision related to diabetes, check your blood sugar and get it into its optimal range.

Exercises for the eye muscles can also help sharpen vision and lower the rate of eye muscle degeneration. Some of these exercises are:

  1. Alternately focus on an object close to you and another far from you for ten seconds each.
  2. Blink your eyes and hold for two seconds
  3. Roll your eyes clockwise and anticlockwise. Repeat 15-20 times.
  4. Rub your palms together to generate heat and place over your eyes to relax them.

A healthy diet with plenty of vitamin A can help keep your eyes healthy and prevent blurring of vision. Wearing sunglasses can also protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation and lower their rate of wear and tear. Lastly avoid reading in moving vehicles and holding a book too close to your face.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

I want to remove my eyes glasses what should I do for it and in how many days it can remove.
Hello, get your eyes tested from an opthalmologist. Include the following for getting better vision: vitamins a, c, e, and minerals like copper and zinc are essential to eyesight. Get the antioxidants from dark leafy greens, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Include garlic and onions. Blueberries, grapes as they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision. Dha is a fatty acid found in coldwater fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel. Exercises for strengthening eye muscles: -begin by partially closing your eyes; the lids should only be halfway shut. After holding for 10-15 seconds, close your eyes very slowly. Take a few deep breaths to increase oxygen in the blood. -warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times. -hold a pen at arm's length. Focus your gaze on the tip of the pen. Bring the pen closer to your nose at a slow and steady pace. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times. -concentrate your vision on the tip of your nose. Then shift your gaze to an object further away, either at arm's length or 20 feet away. Then shift your eyes back to the tip of your nose. Repeat this exercise 10 times. -sit in a relaxed but upright position. Begin by look to the left-most position (without moving your head) and hold to stretch your eye muscles. Hold for 5 counts. Blink and return your gaze back to look straight in front of you. Then look to the right-most position with your gaze and hold for 5 counts. Repeat 3 times, blinking between each hold. Then, repeat this exercise looking up and then down. Do not forget about blinking. -sit in a relaxed but upright position. Look up and to your right for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look up to and to your left for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look down and to your right for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look down and to your left for 5 seconds. -one helpful way to do this is to imagine that you are looking at the number 12 on a clock. Then, follow the numbers around the clock with your eyes. Repeat going the other way around the clock. Insufficient sleep may weaken your vision, so shoot for 8 hours of sound sleep a night. Rest your eyes 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading or in front of the computer. If your eyes feel overly tired, lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids. Medication: take homoeopathic medicine which will help you in preventing first and then reducing the power of your eyes (if the eye power is less). Take physostigma 6/ thrice daily for 1 month and instill euphrasia eye drops twice a day. Thereafter, revert back for further guidance.

What Is Amblyopia? Are You or Your Child Suffering From It?

Diploma in Ophthalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Hyderabad
What Is Amblyopia? Are You or Your Child Suffering From It?

Amblyopia is decreased vision in one or both eyes due to abnormal development of vision in infancy or childhood. It is commonly known as lazy eye, in which a child's vision does not develop properly, usually in one eye. If it is left untreated, a child's vision will never develop correctly in the affected eye.

What are the types of Amblyopia are there?
There are several different types and causes of Amblyopia, such as Strabismic Amblyopia, Deprivation Amblyopia and Refractive Amblyopia. The end result of all forms of Amblyopia is reduced vision in the affected eye(eyes).

How does Lazy Eye occurs?
Lazy eye occurs when your brain favors one eye, often due to poor vision in your other eye. Eventually, your brain might ignore signals from your weak or lazy eye. The condition can result in vision impairment and loss of depth perception.

What are the Symptoms of Lazy Eye?
Lazy eye may be hard to detect until it becomes severe. Early warning signs include:

  1. Tendency to bump into objects on one side
  2. An eye that wanders inward or outward
  3. Eyes that appear not to work together
  4. Poor depth perception
  5. Double vision
  6. Squinting

What Causes Lazy Eye?
A number of conditions and factors can lead you to rely on one eye more than the other. These include:

  1. Constant strabismus or turning of one eye
  2. Genetics or a family history of lazy eye
  3. Different levels of vision in each of your eyes
  4. Damage to one of your eyes from trauma
  5. Drooping eyelids
  6. Vitamin A deficiency
  7. Corneal ulcer or scar
  8. Eye surgery
  9. Vision impairment, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
  10. Glaucoma, which is high pressure in your eye that can lead to vision problems and blindness

How is Amblyopia diagnosed?
When it first occurs, parents and children often don't notice the condition. It's important to get routine eye exams as an infant and child, even if you show no outward symptoms of eye problems.
Family history of amblyopia is a risk factor for the condition.

How Is Lazy Eye Treated?

  • Glasses/Contact Lenses
  • Eye Patch
  • Eye Drops
  • Surgery
  • Other treatments include:
  • Atropine penalization therapy (also used for maintenance)
  • Optical blurring through contact lenses or elevated bifocal segments

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

What are the initial symptoms of glaucoma. Is it hereditary. What are the precautions to be taken.

BHMS
Homeopath, Chennai
What are the initial symptoms of glaucoma. Is it hereditary.
What are the precautions to be taken.
Symptoms of closed angle glaucoma are Eye pain, usually severe. Blurred vision. Eye pain is often accompanied by nausea and sometimes vomiting. Lights appear to have extra halo-like glows around them. Red eyes. Sudden, unexpected vision problems, especially when lighting is poor. Too much aqueous production or obstruction of its outflow from the eye causes a rise in intraocular pressure (IOP) that can lead to glaucoma. In most types of glaucoma, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is associated with damage to the optic nerve in the back of the eye.
