General Physician,
Can High Cholesterol Lead To Diabetes?

When was the last time you checked your cholesterol levels?
Are you one of the many who do not get a regular health check up unless a medical condition necessitates it?
Well, if you are, you may be putting you are jeopardising your own health. This is because some diseases do not have overt physical signs or symptoms to warn you in time. One such condition is high cholesterol.
High cholesterol implies high level of bad LDL cholesterol in your body. It does not cause any physical symptoms. So, you are less likely to identify it till you get yourself tested for it.
Having high LDL cholesterol puts at risk for developing many other ailments. It is basically a silent killer disease.
What are the complications of high LDL cholesterol?
Well, high amounts of LDL cholesterol in your arteries can result in a number of complications. This happens because the plaque deposits inside your arteries and narrows them down. It makes less amount of blood to pass through these blocked arteries which may cause:
-Heart attack
-High blood pressure
-Chest pain or angina
-Chronic kidney disease
Can high cholesterol cause diabetes?
Diabetes is often associated with high cholesterol condition. High LDL cholesterol does not cause diabetes. In fact it’s the diabetes or insulin resistance that hikes up bad cholesterol in your body. High levels of insulin in your blood increase triglycerides and cholesterol.
High cholesterol happens when the sugar sticks onto the low density lipoprotein and it stays in our bloodstream for longer. These sticky plaques are very hard to remove and block your arteries. This leads to even greater damage from LDL cholesterol in comparison to LDL cholesterol without diabetes.
People with diabetes are more prone to high cholesterol. This is because diabetes lowers your good cholesterol known as HDL or high density lipoprotein and increases triglycerides as well as bad LDL cholesterol levels. This gets really dangerous for your health as it hikes your risk for getting a heart attack or a stroke. So, though diabetes and high cholesterol are inter-related, high cholesterol is the effect of diabetes.
If you are diabetic or pre diabetic, make sure your blood sugar levels are under check. It will prevent the further complication of having high cholesterol levels.
How to manage high cholesterol?
-The best way to manage high cholesterol is by taking appropriate medicines and improving your lifestyle by consuming a healthy diet full of fibre and nutrients and exercising daily.
-Keeping your blood sugar levels in check will also prevent LDL cholesterol levels from rising.
-Elevate good HDL cholesterol levels. Your bad cholesterol and triglycerides will automatically come down.
Consult and follow your doctor’s advice diligently.ASK ME PRIVATELY

My wife is 47 years old having chronic problem of low blood pressure, low pulses and sometimes, subsequent depression. Can you suggest some minimal medication to cure this problem. Thanks.

General Physician, Nashik
I understand your concern and would explain that low blood pressure could be related to different causes: - chronic anemia - dehydration - electrolytes imbalances from malnutrition - orthostatic hypotension, etc. I would recommend performing some tests to investigate for the possible cause: - a resting ECG - blood lab tests (complete blood count, blood electrolytes, kidney and liver function tests) A head up tilt test would be necessary to exclude possible orthostatic hypotension. If all these tests result normal there is nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, I would recommend avoiding prolonged standing up position and take plenty of fluids (water, juices) to stay well hydrates. An increase in the salt and caffeine intake could help in raising blood pressure. Hope to have been helpful! Greetings!

DNB Cardiology, MD, Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology

Dear Mr. lybrate-user Do take care of your diet and restrict fat intake. Start regular walking and weight reduction. A cholesterol lowering medications can wait until a repeat check after 2 months considering rest of the reports are normal. Do not bother about Hs CRP. It is a test that can be elevated due to various other reasons other than risk to the heart. It is considered a predictor for heart disease if associated other risk factors are also present, but never in isolation.

Dear lybrate user, only home remedies may not be sufficient enough to lower your blood sugar level. If home remedies could lower the blood sugar then there won't be such worldwide research on diabetes. Home remedies help to confine your blood sugar level to a certain extent. But if you want to lower your blood sugar level then you will surely need some medicine. We need detailed history to prescribe you suitable medicine. *Maintain healthy body weight by doing regular exercise like yoga. *Eat small amount of foods. Do not skip meals. *Take 5-6 times foods with small amount. *Avoid fast foods. No sugar, cola, soft drinks etc. *Drink plenty of water specially before meals. No underground vegetables etc. * Extra fish, lean meat etc will help you. *Avoid smoking, alcohol

Is olive oil is better than mustard oil & sunflower oil for high cholesterol level in blood?

Homeopath, Indore
Yes olive oil is a better option. But olive oil is beneficial only if we used it without coocking. Because at high temperature olive oil loses its goodnes properties. So you can apply it on fried food.
