Hello lybrate-user. Though redness of eyes has variable causes associated with it, the history of chicken pox does give us some useful information. This means that the redness in your eyes could be due to viral infection affecting the conjunctiva and the cornea of the eye. This should be taken seriously and treated. The reason for the urgency is that at times viral infection of the eye tends to leave a permanent damage causing irreversible blindness in the eye. Otherwise, redness of the eyes has multiple causes associated with it. To enumerate a few common causes: (1) allergy of the eye. It is usually caused by improper eye hygiene. There is a tendency to rub the eyes with fingers, handkerchief, cloth, etc. This is not a good habit because it tends to transmit lots of virus, bacteria and dust into the eye. Allergy usually presents with symptoms of watering (clear water), redness and itching of the eye. (2) infectious conjunctivitis: this is usually associated with white-yellowish discharge. If so, it would be a good idea to go and show to an eye specialist in person. (3) foreign body lodged in the eye. This is more commonly associated with people who drive 2 wheeler vehicles without protection. It occurs more commonly in one eye. Foreign bodies that commonly get lodged are eyelashes, insect wings, small insects, dust particles, iron particles (more common with people working in the iron industry) the solution for a foreign body lodged in the eye would be better provided by an eye specialist at the clinic. (4) raised intraocular pressure: this is a condition known as glaucoma. It is not so common as the previous mentioned conditions. There is usually associated pain in the eyes. It is commonly bilateral (occurs in both eyes). There is usually a positive family history of glaucoma associated in a majority of the cases. (5) inflammation of the coats of the eyeball. This is known as" uveitis" it is also a relatively less common condition. There is associated pain. It would require a thorough eye checkup including the retina-thus a good idea would be to visit the eye specialist in person. For you, the right thing to do would be to visit an eye specialist in person and get your eyes evaluated and treated. Hope my suggestions help. Feel free to contact me for further help.

I want to remove my spectacles permanently. What should I do for it?

FICO, Specialist in Cataract,Cornea and refractive surgeries , MD - Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist,
Normally the number gets stabilised by 18 yrs of age. After 18 yrs if number is stable, depending upon your corneal thickness you can undergo laser eye surgery if thickness is good. Or ICL which is implantable collamer lenses. Presently you can use soft contact lenses , with strict aseptic precautions.

Daily morning I have facing headache. And eyes getting become red colour please give solution.
Early morning headache can be due to 1. Migraine headache 2. Tension type 3. Cluster headache 4. Sleep apnea 5. Severe hypertension 6. Brain tumor. You could be suffering from cluster headache as you have redness of eyes with headache. Characteristics of cluster headache are: 1. Severe unilateral headache around the eyes. 2. Headache lasts for 15 to 180 minutes. 3. There is redness or watering of eyes/ nose, eyelid swelling, severe restlessness or agitation. 4 headache can occur once every alternate day to 8 per day. This is just a brief outline. In such headache conventional painkillers are not generally effective and specific medicines are to be taken to prevent headache. Most patients get relief by taking oxygen inhalation. Get mri scan of brain done, get a health check up done, consult a pain specialist. Get treatment according to cause of your headache.

Sir good afternoon sir my eyes are infected by cataract How can I remove please suggest me sir.

Sir good afternoon
sir my eyes are infected by cataract
How can I remove please suggest me sir.
Dont worry. Caract is an old age problem. If it is present n person less dan 50 yrs its termed as presenile. It can b presenile perse or secondry to trauma, ocular infection, etc (complicated cataract) it has surgical cure. But the type of surgery will depend after accesing your lens status. Lens capsule status, state of the pupil and associated conditions. So see an ophthlmologist who would asses all dese and explain you the surgical procedure. Do not panic.

I have a desk job and since a week my eyes gets irritated and lazy. please tell me the solution of irritating eyes.
Usually eye fatigue can be prevented or reduced by making simple changes in your work habits or environment. Make changes to your computer screen, such as: place the screen 20-26 inches away from your eyes and a little below eye level. Regularly clean off dust and fingerprints from the screen. Smudges on the screen can reduce contrast and increase problems with glare and reflections. Choose screens that tilt and swivel. Consider using a glare filter over your screen. Make changes to your work environment, such as: change lighting to reduce glare and harsh reflections. Use an adjustable chair. Place a document holder next to your computer screen. Make changes to your work habits, such as: try the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. Post a note that says" blink" on the computer as a reminder. Take regular breaks from computer work. Take care of your eyes with these steps: apply a washcloth soaked in warm water to tired, dry eyes (with eyes closed). Use artificial tears to refresh your eyes when they feel dry. To help prevent dry eyes while working indoors, use an air cleaner to filter dust and a humidifier to add moisture to the air. Management: give sufficient rest to your eyes with proper sleep. Keep yourself hydrated with intake of 10-12 glasses of water in a day. Eat healthy especially vitamin a rich food (green vegetables, carrots, yellow fruits and vegetables) and avoid junk food. Hold tap water in your flexed palm, dip your one eye closer to the water level, shut and open your eyelids often. Do the same with your other eye. Repeat this whole process 1-2 times more in a day. Give your eyes proper rest. Can keep slices of cucumber or potato or used tea bags over the closed eyes for sometime. Medication: instill 2 drops of euphrasia eye drops in each eye twice daily.

The Importance of Pre-Surgery Testing

DNB Ophtalmology, MS - Ophthalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
The Importance of Pre-Surgery Testing

Any patient who needs to undergo cataract surgery must be evaluated in a thorough manner so as to establish the requirement, appropriateness, expected surgical problems, expected benefits and co-morbid conditions having an influence on cataract surgery.

The preoperative assessment consists of -

A test for your existing glasses prescription:

It is useful for your cataract surgeon to know your existing glasses prescription in cases where there is a high refractive error (people who are very short or long sighted), in order to plan to correct this error after cataract surgery.

A full ocular examination: This includes looking at:

  • The eyelid anatomy and inflammation.
  • The state of the tear film, dry eye changes could make surgery difficult
  • The presence of abnormalities in the cornea that could make visualisation of the cataract difficult during surgery.
  • The amount of dilation the iris undergoes with dilating drops.
  • The type of cataract. Soft cataracts can be aspirated. Hard cataracts need more ultra-sound energy and surgical time to break up and remove. White cataracts may need trypan blue staining to visualize the capsule
  • The measurement of intra-ocular pressure. With this test, we aim to exclude glaucoma and ensure optimal control of immediate pre-operative and intra-operative eye pressures often with extra eye drops that temporarily lower eye pressure.

Biometry Tests: This is a simple pre-operative measurement. It calculates the correct power of artificial intra-ocular lens. They will be implanted into your eye once your cataract is removed.

Corneal Topography: This is a test to map out the corneal curvature in greater detail. It is used prior to premium IOL Implantation like Toric IOLS either monofocal or multifocal , to ensure avoid postoperative refractive errors. This extra test is only required if the biometry readings show larger than normal differences in keratometry readings.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): This test allows detailed visualisation of the macula (the central sensitive part of the retina used for fine vision). If the ophthalmologist suspects any macula changes that may prevent a patient from visual improvement after cataract surgery, he always suggest optical coherence tomography.

Blood Pressure Measurements: It is very important to know your blood pressure measurements before your cataract operation. The risk of having a bleed at the back of your eye during cataract surgery (supra-choroidal haemorrhage) is very small (1 in 10000). But is higher if you have uncontrolled blood pressure.

Blood Sugar Measurements in Diabetic Patients: Cataract surgery itself does not affect your blood sugar measurements if you are diabetic. A routine checkup of blood sugars in diabetics before cataract surgery is done and the surgery if often delayed if the levels were greater than 20mmol/L as the risk of post-operative infection is higher.
