I have stammering problem since a long time. When I am getting nervous or meeting someone for the first time then it happens so badly. So please give me a permanent solution for this problem?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

I am suffering from stammering and I am 19 years old, female. While at home and talking to other people I stammer less but whenever I find myself in public places when I have to face public and speak I stutter alot and sometimes I have blockage due to which I am unable to even speak, I also get nervous and my stomach also hurts while speaking, I also start making faces while speaking and it gets difficult to take out words out of my mouth. So should I consult a speech therapist or a Public speaking and Personality development course ?I am confused.

Dear lybrate-user, You can consult a speech therapist and attend a personality development course. Add, a clinical psychologist to the list. Those therapists know the extent of your problem and their limitations. At some stage, they may refer you to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist may offer an antidepressant and/or anxiolytic drug for few months in addition. I hope you have done ENT check up.

Dear lybrate user. I am sure that you consulted your child specialist about this. What was his advise. Delay in speech is normal upto an age of 2 and half years. Even though there is speech delay, 2 year old child should speak some words, for sure. I suggest you to have a detailed discussion with your child specialist. Take care.

Hoarseness of voice could be due to chronic laryngitis or polyp in vocal cord. Get your throat examined by ent specialist and follow the advice and treatment. Do warm saline gargling 2-3 times daily. Give voice rest. Take throat lozenges. Avoid smoking, if you smoke.

Sir. My father have problem in speaking. We have consult many Ent specialist and surgeons but all in vain. Kindly help me?

MD - Forensic Medicine/Forensic Medicine & Toxicology

A better suggestion can be given after knowing the age, duration, pre-existing diabetes/bp or other diseases. I don't think if he stopped talking suddenly then any ent specialist can help, rather go to a medicine/neurologist or else a psychiatrist.

I am suffering from miss articulation lisp since my childhood. To this stage of my life I HV however spent my life. BT after college I HV to go to workplace. And me being unable to speak clearly. I am facing lots of problem. I avoid asking questions which harms my learning. My pronunciation is not clear. Pls help me Sir.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS

It can be made lesser only and only by Speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, I'd suggest you to visit a Psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it. Hope your query is answered. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts. Wishing you good health.

Dear Lybrate user. In many of the cases Stammering has two important reasons. Vocal chord misalignment or other problems are the primary reason. For this vocal chord complaint, you should consult an ENT specialist and get it corrected. Second reason is purely psychological. Stammer therapy can help you in psychological reasons. Take care.
