Hi sir/madam. I am 18 years old boy. I am having puberphonia. My voice us not yet deepen, still I don't get a deeper manly, low pitch, masculine voice. Still my voice is at high pitch only. All my friend and boys who r younger to me got deeper low pitch voice. But I am still not. I had already consulted three ENT specialist in my area and they also told PUBERPHONIA and they prescribed me to take SPEECH THERAPY. With their consultation I went to speech therapist for two weeks of speech therapy. But I felt there is no changes in my voice. After speech therapy also my voice is like as before. Kindly prescribe me a speech therapist specialist. Pls sir because I faced lot of problem with this voice. Pls help me sir.

Dear lybrate-user, yes for puberphonia you need to consult a speech pathologist. It is not prescribed by any one. Correcting puberphonia needs consistent practice of some techniques and frequent monitoring by speech therapist. St will help you attain a low pitch voice, maintain it, and also keep the health of your throat and vocal folds. I am not really sure what kind of exercises carried out. I would be able to help you in a better way if you could consult me privately where you can share the voice samples too. Thank you.

Hello. Sometimes I have speaking problem. I feel difficult to utter words. But it happens only when I feel nervous. May be its due to stage fear. But what is the solution for this. Kindly suggest.

M. Phil Clinical Psychology
Psychologist, Hyderabad
You can gradually get over the fear. Initially, try to rehearse a speech in front of a mirror. Then try to give a speech in front of your parent or sibling, then in front of a friend. Gradually increase the number to two and then three and so on. Try to achieve this over a period of 6 months. Have faith, i' m sure you'll get over it.

My brother is having a stammering problem from his childhood. Now,he is 25 years old and is a doctor. But that problem is not gone. We have shown him to the ENT doctors and they have concluded that there is no defect in his throat. That problem has taken a mental illness and he is under total depression and not ready to do further studies and always remains in angry mood. We have also shown him to the speech therapists but it is of no use for his problem. How can his problem be tackled efficiently and effectively?

Stammering could have neurological, medical or psychological causal factors. Consult a neurologist first and get all investigations if it is a neurological problem. Sometimes, due to anxiety also people have trouble like this and stammering is the result. For psychological reason, consult a clinical psychologist who may use behavior therapy principles in its treatment management. Lastly, I would also like to tell you sometimes due to such problems, people develop depression and stress as they have difficulty in normal conversation and they feel frustrated. So dealing with frustration is also important point to be kept in mind in their treatment option.

Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. Stammering is" speaking with sudden involuntary pauses and a tendency to repeat the initial letters of words" or" say something with difficulty, repeating the initial letters of words and with sudden involuntary pauses" stammering could be due to two reasons. First reason is vocal cord misalignment. Second is psychological performance anxiety. First of all you should consult an ent specialist and evaluate your vocal chords. If there is problem, ent specialist will be able to correct it. If there is no problem with your vocal chords, the best option is stammer therapy. Take care.

the pitch of voice is determined by lots of things like genetics, hormones, etc. Males are usually appreciated for thick husky voice, and females for sweet voice. I am surprised u want a sweet voice, like female. U can t do anything about nature, so enjoy what u have and live happily

Now a days I do regular practice what ever touched during speech therapy and do yoga from a week but still stammer . And stammer more when I talk to father . Whether he is soft towards me . Sometimes I also fear from talk on phone and moving in market , I fear from people at market for talk . And I think I stammer. Sometimes I went in mental depression.

Hi, you definitely need to see a psychologist for help. Tell your parents frankly that you have been advised to consult a psychologist for curing the stammer. Am sure, they too will want it cured. Do not worry, with right treatment it can be cured fully. They teach ujjai pranayaam- a breathing exercise for stammer. No harm in doing, but must do alongwith watching on tv for correct procedure. In general, the program if watched and followed will do you tremendous good. God bless you!
