Irregular cycles or excessive flow during cycles is a common problem seen in a large number of females. Hormonal abnormalities are the most common cause of irregular and heavy menstrual flow. Thus, you need to consult your primary healthcare provider for clinical assessment and endometrial biopsy/ curretings for diagnosis of the condition and thus treatment.

What Really Causes Infertility In Men and Women?

What Really Causes Infertility In Men and Women?

What causes infertility?

It is important to understand what fertility is for a person or couple to know when it is time to seek help. Infertility refers to the inability to conceive after having regular unprotected sex for a period of 12 months or so. The complex process of ovulation and fertilization need to work right in order to become pregnant.

The common disorders that cause infertility in male and female are listed below:

Causes of male infertility

1. Abnormal sperm production

This can be due to various problems like undescended testicles, genetic defects, health problems including diabetes, infections such as mumps, chronic urinary tract infection especially e. Coli or surgeries on the testicles. Enlarged veins in the testes increase blood flow and heat, affecting the number and shape of sperm.

2. Problems with delivery of sperm

This can happen due to sexual problems, such as premature ejaculation, retrograde ejaculation (semen entering bladder instead of emerging through the penis during orgasm), genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, structural problems such as blockage of the part of the testicle that contains sperm or injury to reproductive organs.

3. Overexposure to certain chemicals and toxins

These can include radiation, pesticides, tobacco smoke, alcohol, marijuana and steroids. Frequent exposure to heat can also elevate the testicular temperature, impairing sperm production.

4. Damage related to cancer

This includes radiation and chemotherapy. Cancer treatments can impair sperm production. Removal of one testicle due to cancer may also affect male fertility.

Causes of female infertility

1. Ovulation disorders

This prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. Examples include hormonal disorder (PCOS, hypothyroidism, hyperprolactinemia), excessive exercise, eating disorders, injuries, cysts be it follicular or endometriotic and ovarian tumors.

2. Uterine abnormalities

This includes problems related to the opening of cervix or abnormalities in the shape of the uterus which includes arcuate or septate uterus or any congenital anomalies like bicornuate uterus or uterine didelphys. Fibroids may distort the uterine cavity interfering with implantation of fertilized egg. Adenomyosis or endometriosis of the endometrium is one the common causes of early infertility.

3. Fallopian tube damage

This usually results from infection of the fallopian tube by a pelvic inflammatory disease caused by sexually transmitted infection, endometriosis or adhesions.

4. Thyroid problems

Disorders of the thyroid gland, either too much thyroid hormone or too little can interrupt the menstrual cycle, leading to infertility in the long run.

Why Blood Clotting During Pregnancy Is Dangerous?

Why Blood Clotting During Pregnancy Is Dangerous?

Clotting of blood is important for us in case of an injury or wound. It prevents the blood to ooze out of the body from any opening. Our blood releases cells called blood platelets, which initiate the process of clotting. However, the clotting of blood inside the veins is not a good thing to happen. This condition is called thrombosis. Moreover, clotting during pregnancy is a serious condition that poses threat to the health of both the mother and the child. In case of pregnant women, clotting of blood starts in the deep veins. These veins are usually the ones in the legs or the pelvic region. This condition is termed as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Why there is a clot during pregnancy?
Blood can clot during pregnancy due to multiple reasons. Clotting occurs to prevent too much loss of blood at the time of labour.

How will you know that it’s DVT?
DVT comes along with certain symptoms. Some of these have been listed below:

  1. The pregnant woman may notice tenderness or swelling in one of her legs. She might feel the pain in one of the legs.
  2. The skin colour of the woman starts reflecting changes. The skin might turn a little reddish.
  3. The patient’s skin will be warmer at the site of clot.
  4. The veins in the affected region might look dilated or larger in size.

What are the dangers linked to this clotting?
Whatever may be the reason, clotting during pregnancy is always attached to some dangerous consequences. If the blood clot is left unattended and untreated for long, it may have some serious consequence. The clot may start shifting from your legs to one or both of your lungs. This condition is called pulmonary embolism (PE). It is acute condition that can cause death of the patient as well. The symptoms of PE are as follows:

  1. The patient suffers from sudden breathlessness.
  2. The patient may feel that there is some tightness around the chest.
  3. The patient may find blood in her cough.
  4. The patient may show signs of collapse.

Clotting of blood can also prove detrimental to the baby’s health and growth. The blood is supplied through placenta to the baby and a clot in the mother’s vein can decrease the amount of blood supplied to the baby. Sometimes, the blood supply to placenta might be entirely snapped, leading to the death of the child inside the womb. However, blood clotting at the time of pregnancy happens to only a few women. It has been found that one or two in thousand die due to clotting of blood during pregnancy.

I have little dark blood clots with the bleeding during menstrual cycle. Is it a major problem for conceiving?
No this can be considered as normal variation of menses. If you have been trying for more than a year with regular sex i. E. 3-4 times a week then you definitely need to seek medical help.

Do not worry too much. Let her eat, do what she finds comfortable. Let her be the deciding factor about when and what to eat. Let her relax and enjoy the pregnancy.

Based on the symptoms you have described, it looks like she has developed mild infection in the vaginal region. If the pain doesn't settle or if the swelling increases in size it is advised to consult a doctor before taking antibiotics.
