Heavy Menstrual Flow - Tips to Deal With it!

Heavy Menstrual Flow - Tips to Deal With it!

Heavy menstrual flow also known as Menorrhagia is one of the most common form of abdominal bleeding from uterus. Everyone has different periods, some might not even notice that time of the month, while others might suffer from heavy bleeding, feeling miserable and a constant worry of leaks and stains leading to embarrassing situations. Periods are considered to be heavy if a pad or tampon is soaked in blood every hour.

Other symptoms of heavy bleeding could be:

  • Passing of large clots
  • Bleeding at night which requires to get up to change a pad
  • Any period that lasts for more than seven days

The causes of heavy bleeding during periods might be due to fibroids (noncancerous tumors of the uterus),
ectopic pregnancy, cervical cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, use or blood thinners and problems with intrauterine device.

If you are one of those women who suffer from heavy menstrual flow and are quite hassled by the same then worry not here are some tips to deal the your problem.

  1. Keep a track of the periods as in when they start and the days with heavy bleeding. This helps you to track your next period and prepare yourself well for the same
  2. Low iron levels can cause heavy bleeding, thus maintaining the iron levels is a good idea
  3. Eating green leafy vegetables and taking multivitamins helps to maintain the iron levels
  4. Eat fruit and food with starch to maintain a good sugar level
  5. Hydrate yourself as it makes you feel less grumpy and miserable
  6. In case of severe cramps take some pain relievers like aspirin and ibuprofen. Even a hot water bottle is a great way to chase the blues and the cramps
  7. Get some sleep as one feels tired before the period and the days of the period. Listen to your body and don't push yourselves. Use extra protection in case you are worried about leakage
  8. Try using a menstrual cup as they have greater capacity as compared to tampons or pads. Also, one does not need to carry any supplies for the day
  9. Don't feel shy or embarrassed to talk about your condition
  10. You might need professional help and want to consult a doctor. Keeping a track of your period is good as doctors usually ask for the duration of the period and how heavy were they.

If you do not feel better with these tips a meeting with the doctor can predict the cause of the heavy flow and accordingly a medical treatment can be planned.

Medication for heavy bleeding might include any one or more of the following:

  1. Use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen
  2. Hormone Therapy for stabilizing the endometrium
  3. Tranexamic acid to promote blood clotting
  4. Dilation and curettage that is scraping of the uterus is done
  5. Hysteroscopy is where a long scope is inserted in the vagina and the lining of the uterus which causes bleeding is removed
  6. Endometrial resection is where the lining of the uterus is destroyed or removed and also makes it impossible to have babies after this
  7. Hysterectomy - This procedure is the surgical removal of cervix and uterus (If this procedure is done then it is impossible to make babies after this) If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

When to See a Fertility Specialist?

MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecolog, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Hyderabad
When to See a Fertility Specialist?

If you’ve been facing problems in conceiving, it may be time to get yourself checked as it’s possible that you may be suffering from certain fertility issues or need professional guidance. A series of tests usually determine the root cause of the problem. These tests can include a physical examination, analysis of semen and blood tests, amongst others. There are certain factors that you and your partner must keep in mind when deciding upon the best time to opt for these tests and get started on an infertility treatment programme.

If you’re a female, it’s time to get yourself examined when:
1. You haven’t been able to conceive for over a year despite trying (when you are under 35)
2. You haven’t been able to conceive after trying for 6 months (above the age of 35)
3. You’ve had 1 or more miscarriages
4. You’ve been ovulating irregularly and your previous drug treatment has failed to correct the problem
5. You suffer from damaged or blocked fallopian tubes and endometriosis (a condition where tissues that cover your uterus also develop outside of the womb, causing pain and bleeding)
6. You have a history of genital infections

If you’re a male, you should consider an infertility treatment if you experience the following:
1. Facing difficulty in sperm ejaculation
2. Suffering from a low sperm count including poor sperm movement or structure (sperm’s shape and size)
3. Having an undescended testicle (a genital abnormality that occurs when the testicle fails to move into its normal position in the scrotum during the first 3 months of your life)

Apart from the above mentioned points, another important factor that you and your partner must decide upon is whether or not you intend to use assisted reproductive procedures, such as ICSI (IntraCytoplasmic Semen Insertion) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) to help in conceiving. While the former sees fertilisation occurring naturally after the eggs and sperm get placed inside one of the two fallopian tubes, the latter deals with the transference of the embryo created in the laboratory into the uterus.

Even though the thought of infertility can be disappointing for you and your partner, early and timely intervention can help in easing up the process of conception and remove obstacles that might hinder your chances of having a baby. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.

During pregnancy most women are likely to pay more attention to living healthy and eating a healthy diet, but it is also important to keep a check on the key element during pregnancy - hydration.

When pregnant or breastfeeding, a woman's water requirements are higher than usual and that is why water is needed to form amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby, support the increase in blood plasma volume and produce breast milk.

Hence being well hydrated may help alleviate some pregnancy related conditions.

To help understand the importance of hydration for pregnancy health, emma derbyshire, author of" nutrition in the childbearing years, has provided essential tips for hydration in pregnancy.

1. Water is an excellent beverage choice for mums-to-be. It is natural and helps women to rehydrate without consuming calories and sugars.

2. Women should increase their total water intake by an extra 300ml/day during pregnancy and 700ml/day during breastfeeding.

3. Make water the first choice when it comes to hydration.

4. Water-rich foods such as soups, stews, yoghurts, fruits and vegetables can help top up total water intake.

5. Pregnant women should take frequent small drinks, particularly after the birth of their child when they are busy looking after their new baby.

6. Women breastfeeding should make sure that they are getting enough fluids - try to remember to keep a glass of water on hand when you sit down to feed your baby.

7. Women should reduce their intake of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages

In order to know in the scan you should be minimum 6 to 7 wks pregnant, and as regards your tests showing negative it might be that you are not pregnant, however since you are keen to become pregnant sometimes anxiety and stress levels too doesn't allow the periods to come and the same feeling of pain like symptoms happen. Now the best would be you wait for a few more days and repeat the tests after 2 weeks, if the period still doesn't happen. For any further information or assistance you may get back to us. If you are not pregnant this time it's Advise you go for a fertlity enhancing Medicines treatment to fulfill your desire.

Wait for 2-3 days and inform me. The brain (including the hypothalamus and pituitary gland), ovaries, and uterus normally follow a sequence of events once per month that helps to prepare the body for pregnancy (figure 1). Two hormones, follicle stimulating hormone (fsh) and luteinizing hormone (lh), are made by the pituitary gland. Two other hormones, progesterone and estrogen, are made by the ovaries.

Symptoms, Causes and Prevention For Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is an infection that is caused by a parasite and is transmitted sexually. This disorder is characterized by symptoms of itching in the genitalia, smelly discharge from the vagina and pain while urinating. This disorder may also result in premature birth in case of pregnant women.

Causes behind it

The disorder is caused by a parasite known as Trichomonas vaginalis. Certain factors increase your chances of contracting this disorder; them being:

1. Engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse

2. If you have had an episode of Trichomoniasis

3. If you have been affected by STI/STDs before

4. Having multiple sex partners can certainly augment its chances

Prevention

Vomiting in pregnancy is always considered as a healthy sign of good pregnancy, which means pregnancy is secreting enough hormones to produce vomiting. If your ultrasound report is normal there is no reason to worry. This is temporary, and can be relieved by tablet doxinate 3 times a day and eat in less quantity at one time. You can increase the frequency of meals than quantity. Also early morning eat 4-5 parle g biscuits and in whole day eat food with more sugar, to prevent more vomiting.

Thank you for your query. Generally travelling should not affect your ability to get pregnant unless it stops you from having sex atleast 2-3 times a week. Once you are pregnant it may be wise to avoid long distance journeys until the location of the pregnancy and placenta are confirmed. Even then it is better to restrict long distance journeys during pregnancy to one or two. hope this helps best wishes

Orgasm - 6 Ways You Can Do Better!

Diploma in Paediatrics, MBBS
Sexologist, Dehradun
Orgasm - 6 Ways You Can Do Better!

Your good intention during intercourse might be to give your partner an intense orgasm, but orgasms aren’t something one can “give”. All you can do is make the conditions more favorable for the other person to have them by manipulating your moves.

Here are six ways in which you can orgasm better:

  1. Don’t skip the foreplay: Just like it is not a good idea to run a marathon without sufficient warm up, it isn’t advisable to skip or shorten the foreplay. Explore and find out and choose the right kinds of foreplay that take the arousal to great heights. Oral sex, clitoral stimulation and self-stimulation during sex are incredible in achieving a better climax.
  2. Experiment with edging: Try what we call 'edging'. That is, bring yourself close to climax, then stop short of reaching climax, and after a pause a few seconds, rebuild your arousal – again just close to climax. Repeat this until you can't hold any more and then come! The resulting orgasm is very intense and worth the effort.
  3. Try sex toys: Once in a while let a sex toy join the fun. Sex toys are useful in maximizing the pleasure levels during intercourse or solo.
  4. Use a lubricant: Don’t think that a lube just addresses the vaginal dryness and painful intercourse. Research shows that as many as 50% women get better orgasms when they use lubricants. The lubrication adds sensitivity to the genitals and helps get good orgasms.
  5. Target the C-spot: A lot of women have problems in getting orgasms during intercourse as the clitoris isn’t stimulated enough. The clitoris has the maximum number of nerve endings and during intercourse, clitoral contact is needed for most women to reach orgasm. Tip: Try out woman-on top, side-to-side and doggy style positions for clitoral stimulation. There are many more options too.
  6. Do not overlook the testes: Stroking your sack upwards right before getting an orgasm adds more power to the orgasms in men. The testes are tremendous pleasure points for a man and gently stroking them is useful in heightening the arousal which leads to a stronger orgasm. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist.
