Diabetes Can Cause loss of Teeth

I have broken my upper front tooth 3 days ago due to accident. I don't have any pain now. Will it be repaired or should I get it removed .Will the gap after removal can be filled or replaced by something? Pls help.

BDS, MDS
Dentist, Gorakhpur
After meeting to a dentist the real problem and future problem will be assessed by a radiograph and then if required a tooth colored filling or RCT can be done. Tooth removal in your case is least possibility yet if there is root fracture then tooth removal can not be avoided. The gap created by removal can be restored with fix bridge which is a type of artificial tooth. It has a long life so you need not worry. Thank you.

Hi Sahil . Looks like sinusitis but an ENT will be able to diagnose better. Infection from the sinus can affect soft tissue like gums and lead to sensitive teeth. The solution is with an ENT

If your father is having white ulcers, they might be signs of pre-cancerous lesions(may be leukoplakia), please advise your father to quit smoking and go for biopsy(microscopic examination in a laboratory ) of those ulcers by a dentist. Dont delay this, go for treatment immediately.

Diabetes and Dental Health

Diabetes is a degenerative disease, which affects your metabolism. As a result of metabolic irregularities, every part of the body is affected. The following are early indications of untreated diabetes:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Increased hunger

In addition to the ones above, the following are associated symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Slow healing of cuts
  • Itchy skin

How can diabetes affect your mouth?

  • Diabetes increases the risk of infections and delayed regeneration of damaged/dead cells. As a result, fungal infections like thrush may develop in your mouth.
  • Because of poor healing of wounds as a result of diabetes, extensive gum damage may occur.
  • Periodontitis is a severe effect of diabetes in which your gums begin to move away from your teeth, leading to a formation of pockets between your gums and teeth, which fill up with pus and germs. The damage can be stopped only with gum surgery and removal of affected teeth.

Prevention

The single most effective way to prevent damage to your teeth is to actively control blood sugar content by regularly taking medicines and following a healthy diet recommended by your doctor. Common methods of dental protection go a long way to help prevent oral problems because of diabetes. These include:

  • Brush thoroughly and carefully after every meal (wait 30 minutes for food acids to neutralize, and then brush as this helps in effective cleaning)
  • Use non-alcoholic mouthwash to treat dry mouth and disinfect the oral cavity
  • Floss at least once everyday
  • Use a soft bristled toothbrush
  • Remove your dentures and clean them regularly. Do not sleep putting them on
  • Quit smoking, chewing tobacco and chewing gums with sugar in them

Hello. I am 28 years male. I have continuous problem in my teeth. I have done Rct of 2 teeth and filling in 4, teeth. I am vegetarian. No bad habit of tobbaco and drink. I brush my teeth two time daily. But why every time problem occurs? Which toothpaste I should use? Pls suggest.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months. You can use Pepsodent tooth paste.

Taking care of your tooth brush is as important as taking care of your teeth. So, always rinse your tooth brush thoroughly after brushing and allow it to air-dry before using it again.
