Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Advise get an X-Ray done and connect with the report for further naturopathic traction. Sometimes joint pain is seen, especially at the temperomandibular joint and can be alleviated with natural medicines suitably. For the time being, suggest avoid biting any kind of hard food stuff including chocolates, nuts, meat etc all as it is likely to aggravate the pain/ condition. A little bit of cold application, externally, can help lessen swelling, if any. Stay well hydrated, and keep your diet and lifestyle streamlined. Do take care, and all the very best. Sincerely,

Kindly get an x-ray done of the tooth having pain and may be you will have to get root canal treatment done followed by a crown or cap. Till then you can take a pain killer like tab ketorol dt 2 tabs dissolved in water. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique and maintain your oral hygiene.

I am 27 year old female. I feel pain in my gums. While I do brush regularly and its also swelling. What I do.

BDS
Dentist, Raipur
This is because of infection of gums due to stains and calculus. You first get a professional cleaning and take a antibiotic and anti inflammatory course prescribed by dentist. And then follow the care instructions for good oral health given by your doctor. You will be fine. Cheers.

I have been seeing a lot of questions on bad breath. Bad breath is caused by many factors like calculus, food debris, poor oral hygiene, use of tobacco, other medical problems like decreased saliva due to radiation, or any other medication's. It may be also due to gastric problems and worm infestation. The most common treatment is a professional cleaning and maintaining good oral hygiene. People with decreased saliva can chew on bubble gum or sip citrus fruits to stimulation of salivary gland. Patients with acid reflux should consult a gastrointestinal specialist.

How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

Mouth breathing in children is very common and while a kid with open mouth might seem cute, it is not always the case. The parents need to be made aware that a child breathing through the mouth all the time is not normal and it is high time they find a way to manage it.

A little understanding of the effects of the mouth breathing habit on the child's health in general and oral health in particular can be an eye-opener for the parent. For an educated person, there are obvious symptoms, which indicate that the child is a mouth-breather.

These symptoms include:

  1. Dryness of the lips
  2. Crowding of the front teeth
  3. Snoring
  4. Sleeping with the mouth open
  5. Recurrent infections of the airways including sinusitis and middle ear infections
  6. Bad breath

Common causes include:

  1. Chronic nasal obstruction/congestion because of which the child is not able to get enough oxygen through the nose.
  2. Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  3. Thumb or finger-sucking habit
  4. Recurrent respiratory infections

Effects of mouth breathing on oral health:

Mouth breathing may seem like a harmless habit, but has serious effects on the oral and dental health of the child. Some of them are discussed below.

  1. Dry mouth: A constantly open mouth can lead to drying up of the saliva. This in turn leads to reduced effects of saliva including the flushing effect on the bacteria and the food deposits. This leads to increased chances of tooth decay and gum diseases.
  2. Tooth decay: With reduced saliva, the pH remains acidic for a longer period of time, leading to increased chances of tooth decay.
  3. Gum diseases: Reduced amounts of saliva also leads to increased gum disease and periodontal disease as the bacteria are not removed and have a conducive environment to act upon.
  4. Facial development: A mouth breathing child maintains a different posture than a nose breather. This leads to a narrow and long face, flattened nose, smaller nostrils, reduced facial tone, thin upper lip, pouty upper lip, and a small lower jaw.
  5. Speech: An open mouth causes the tongue to thrust into the palate when talking. This leads to altered pronunciation of some sounds; especially and can cause lisping.
  6. Braces: Mouth breathing causes multiple challenges including prolonged treatment period, inability to close the gaps, reduced stability of the realigned teeth, and increased chances of relapse. The added complication of increased gum disease and tooth decay makes it worse. The habit needs to be corrected first before going in for braces.

If that sounds like a long list, they are not all inclusive. Early intervention in the habit can correct and negate all these effects. Talk to your dentist to know how to help your mouth breathing child.

Cause of discoloration ? Smoking, coffee, tea, drugs, aging, staining food (wine, blueberry, etc) genetics. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning along with whitening (bleaching) procedures and / or artificial enamel filling and / or capping. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Use Snowdent tooth paste for whitening until then. Apply SNOWDENT paste on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min .Then brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight for better results. DENTAL TIPS: - Visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

Hi! My daughter is 12 and she asks for braces for correcting her teeth line, which I agree to. What age is apt for getting this done? Need to know the basic difference between retainers and braces. Thanx a lot in advance!

MDS - Orthodontics
Dentist, Kolar
Yes good question. Orthodontic treatment starts from 9 years were we do any growth modulations procedures and between 12 to 13 year is write time because all permaments teeths will be in oral cavity. Retainers are only given after completion of the treatment to retain the corrections achieved following the course of treatment. And braces are brackets which we put during treatment.

Sir, it depends on how big the gap is. Very small gaps can be closed with cement. They may cost at least up to 500. But the cost varies from clinic to clinic and the material they use. But closing the gap may require braces on the teeth for time periods varying from 6 months to one and a half years. And the cost will again depend on the doctor and the type of treatment.

I' m a 32 years old male. I' m brushing daily morning thoroughly before breakfast since my childhood. But the colour of my tooth is not pure white. Is there any tips to do along with daily brushing to get pure white colour?

BDS, Non-Resident J.R. in Dept. of Orthodontics, Certified oral implantologist, Advanced Aesthetics, Digital Smile Designer
Dentist, Jammu
Start using colgate visible white toothpaste, if still you are not satisfied, you can go for bleaching of teeth(dental bleaching, also known as tooth whitening, is a common procedure in general dentistry. According to the fda, whitening restores natural tooth color and bleaching whitens beyond the natural color. There are many methods available, such as brushing, bleaching strips, bleaching pen, bleaching gel, and laser bleaching. Teeth whitening has become the most requested procedure in cosmetic dentistry today)
