Putting your child to breat and allowing it to suckle stimulates breast for more milk production. If it does not work, you might consider using formulae feed for your baby.

Raising your Children with High Self Esteem

Post Graduate Diploma in Pyschology

Raising your Children with High Self Esteem

Building your child’s confidence and self image is an important part of raising a child. Self image can be defined as a child’s view of himself and his strengths. If a child is comfortable with his self image, he will have confidence in himself. A foundation of self confidence is key to a child’s success in his adult life. In their childhood years, a parent is the main source of building a child’s self worth or self confidence. Here are a few ways you can develop your child’s self confidence.

1. Avoid negative self talk: Children learn by watching their parents. Hearing parents berate themselves will make children do the same. Talking badly about yourself can reinforce a low self esteem. Hence avoid talking negatively about yourself and stop your child from doing it as well. If your child talks negatively about himself, give him evidence to prove the opposite or give them meaningful compliments. Also avoid calling your child names to shame him as these are likely to stay ingrained in his mind.

2. Celebrate uniqueness: Don’t make your child feel like he has to live up to the standards set by siblings or peers. Further, do not pressurize them to fulfill your dreams. Recognize your child’s strengths and celebrate his unique abilities. Help them develop their talents and set their own standards for themselves.

3. Let your child make decisions: Empower your child by allowing them to make decisions about simple things like what game to play or what to eat for dinner. Make them feel that their views are valued and thus teach them to be an active member of the family.

4. Let them work things out for themselves: Spoon feeding your child makes things easier at the time, but in the long run can have a negative effect on their self confidence. Be patient and let your child try and do things for himself. As he meets and overcomes new challenges, his confidence will grow. Give your child age appropriate chores to do around the house. This helps build responsibility and a feeling of competency.

5. Be genuine about your praise: Children are highly intuitive and can tell the difference between sincere praise and something being said merely for the sake of it. For example, if your child has made a drawing, instead of simply telling your child that he is an artist in the making be more specific and praise his choice or colours or ability of colouring within the lines.

My daughter don't want to eat regular food like milk, rice, vegetables etc. We have to feed her by force and she is very skinny but active all the time.

Hji some kids are fussy eaters. Try to inculcate good eating habits. Don't introduce wrong foods. If she is active and then skinny you don't need to worry much. Whatever is being made at home should be served. Take care.

Hi doc, my son is 1 year 4 months old. My question is regarding avg sleep hours for this age babies. He hardly sleeps 9 hours in night and in between also wakes up in crying mood. Can you please give me some info on this so that I can come over my worry?

Pediatrician, Pune
Dont worry sleep peacefully and let your child also sleep comfortably, avg sleep varies from person to person and even in same person in different times of the year, trying to make any changes in the natural sleep hours causes further problems, but see that the child sleeps in quite dark room with minimal disturbance, mostly at the same time of night ~ 9- 10 pm, please do not keep tv in the bedroom, an undisturbed good sleep is the best tonic for the bay for good growth and keeping him / her happy

How to Prevent Your Child from Developing Type 2 Diabetes?

MBBS, DNB, Diploma Dyslipidemia, CCEBDM, CCMTD

How to Prevent Your Child from Developing Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that prevents the body from processing sugar or glucose. The disorder causes insufficient production of the hormone Insulin (responsible for regulating sugar into the different parts of your body); or the body's failure to respond to the hormone produced. Although no cure is available for T2DM, there are several ways in which you can help prevent Type 2 diabetes in your child. These are:

1. Get your child to indulge in some physical activity - Spending about 60 minutes of the day on physical activity can help your child to ward off Type 2 diabetes. In terms of screen time, it shouldn't be over 2 hours a day. By doing so, he or she ends up building his or her muscles as well as gets rid of extra fat from the body. An active life would also help your child to maintain an optimal body weight with obesity being a cause of this form of diabetes. Whether it's a sport like swimming, cricket or basketball, or even walking and dancing, physical activity in any form can help in preventing your child from developing Type 2 diabetes.

2. Plan a well-balanced diet for your child - Encouraging your child to have healthy foods and making right food choices can also lower his or her chances of getting this metabolic disorder. Foods high in fiber like whole grain cereals and bread, lentils, fruits, and vegetables should be consumed. Similarly, foods low in trans and saturated fats like lean meat, chicken, yogurt and cheese should be included in your child's diet. Processed foods, as well as sugary drinks, should be no-no when it comes to your child's diet.

3. Adopting proper eating habits - It is not only making the right food choices that are important but eating right as well is vital for preventing the onset of diabetes. Having meals with fix portion sizes is a habit that you need to develop in your child. Ideally, half the plate should be filled with vegetables and fruits; a quarter with lean protein like chicken; and the remaining with whole grain. To accompany the meal, make your child have one cup of no-fat or low-fat milk. Desserts like ice cream and cookies should be allowed only once or twice a week.

I am a premature baby when I was born. So the nurse gave me a formulated milk instead of breast milk, so did I have any risk of disease when I becoming old.

Formula milk is designed according to babys needs, so you are not at any risk per say. It is quite helpful for premature baby as they dont have strength to take breast feeding which needs lot of efforts. When you gain weight, you can switch to breast milk, otherwise your mother can express breast milk and that can be given orally by syringe, so you wont have to fully depend upon formula feed and mother also starts getting more milk.

Hi, thanks for contacting me. Your son is possibly suffering from eczema/ dandruff of the scalp. Treatment would involve keeping the scalp'moist' use a good quality oil to massage the roots and then wash it off after 10 minutes with a baby'no-tears' shampoo. If the problem persists, talk to me on private chat or consult your pediatrician. Warm regards

What to do ?

It may be your perception that stool is loose. It may be liquid or semi solid but may be many times in a day. It does not require any medicine. Since she is still on exclusive breast milk at 6 months, she requires additional food and top milk too. It is her weaning period. Start with semi solids with any one like kheechadee, dal, suji kheer etc. It may resolve problem.

Small babies should wear at least six layers of warm clothes. It is layers that is important because warmth is due to the air trapped between the layers..
