My father has an asthma what is the effect of using an asthma preventer for long term?

MD - Internal Medicine
General Physician, Nashik
The effects are good if you are using inhalational steroids. They prevent / reduce the progression of disease at the cost of minor side effects. If you do cost/benefit analysis, using inhalational steroids is a win-win situation.

My babe is 5years old and is having cough for the last 1year and having montaire tab. Last day onwards he is having fever. I am totally upset. What's the reason of this cough?

Master in Psychology, MD - Ayurveda, Dems, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda,
Cough may be due to allergy. And recurrent allergic conditions leads to recurrent infection n fever. The only permanent solution is to avoid the allergens n boost the immunity power. Avoid cold, fried and spicy food items. Avoid dust, smoke, pollution. Avoid day time sleeping and late night sleeping. I think you should start ayurvedic medicines as soon as possible.

Cold, cough and throat problem can happen due to weather changes, exposure to cold air or rain, dust and pollen allergy and certain sour food. *. Mix some salt in warm water and do gargling early in the mornings. * Steam inhalation will relieve your congestion *. Keep a clove (lavang) in your mouth and slowly chew it. *. Drinking water frequently will eliminate toxins From the body and reduce congestion if any *. Avoid fried and oily foods. This can be treated by homoeopathy without adverse effects. Dust allergy is partly genetic and partly environmental. Thus it never goes away. With better ,less dusty environment  the extent if the problem gets reduced. Medicines help to downregulate the immune response of your body to these environmental allergens. Long term lifestyle  changes with gradually tapering medication  helps to tackle chronic sinus problems.  Start taking Steam inhalation twice a day. *For chronic allergic rhinosinusitis you will need to take a long term course of antibiotics  together  with Nasal sprays.*You will need to avoid dusty environment  and dust mites, animal dander etc. Regular cleaning of AC air filters. Wearing mask while driving 2 wheelers/working in dusty  areas Medical  management  is done for 3 months and then patients  condition is reviewed.  Intermittent treatment is not beneficial  in the long run. Around 30 %of people with allergic rhinitis  will develop Asthma if not treated .But majority of patients with asthma are allergic to dust .Active treatment  of nasal allergy reduces Asthma attacks and medicine requirements. This improve  quality of life .allergens.

My mother has been diagnosed with spine tuberculosis. She is having persistent pain in back. Is this normal? How long will this pain stay? What is course of treatment and precautions to be taken?

Erasmus Mundus Master in Adapted Physical Activity, MPT, BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Chennai
Spinal tuberculosis is a destructive form of tuberculosis. It accounts for approximately half of all cases of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. Spinal tuberculosis is more common in children and young adults. Characteristically, there is destruction of the intervertebral disk space and the adjacent vertebral bodies, collapse of the spinal elements, and anterior wedging leading to kyphosis and gibbus formation. The thoracic region of vertebral column is most frequently affected. Formation of a ‘cold’ abscess around the lesion is another characteristic feature. The incidence of multi-level noncontiguous vertebral tuberculosis occurs more frequently than previously recognized. Common clinical manifestations include constitutional symptoms, back pain, spinal tenderness, paraplegia, and spinal deformities. The most important factor in SCI rehabilitation programme is early rehabilitation. The positioning in the acute phase, early starting of passive, active-assisted and active exercises will greatly contribute standing of the patient earlier and to mobilize. Standing and mobilization are not recommended in the acute period for these patients. Generally, standing and ambulation are recommended during the subacute period. Patients with spinal tuberculous, bracing with a conforming orthosis (plaster or molded thermoplastic) has been used in combination with antituberculous drugs as initial treatment. Bracing is continued 3 mo after the first radiologic sign of bony fusion[37]. The onset of pain or increase in pain during exercise programs in the early period should be evaluated carefully. Pain aggravating exercises should be avoided and the exercise program should be discontinued if there is a significant increase in pain intensity disturbing the patient following the rehabilitation program. The patient should not be exhausted during exercise and mobilization and should have adequate resting after exercise. High calorie diet regimens should be provided since metabolic requirements are increased during both disease and the rehabilitation period.

Hello doctor. I was diagnosed with gland tuberculosis in March 15 gone under complete treatment of TB for six month (completed on September) now that gland almost dissolved and its being more then one year, can I donate blood now as I was regular done in my college life and before 2014 or have to waite more.

MD - Alternate Medicine, BHMS
Homeopath, Surat
Before donating blood, better you take a fitness certificate from the physician there. It's because donating blood is a very good job, but if by-chance any bacteria got remained in blood and while donating getting transferred to blood, then it can harm another patient who is already in pain. So to be frank, just get a fitness certificate from physician, and then donate blood. Take care :)
