Whiplash - Causes And Symptoms

A stinging pain in the neck that makes you feel broken from the neck joint could be a reason to worry. It is often accompanied by an aching head or a throbbing shoulder joint. Neck pain, such as this occurs due to an injury in the area resulting from sudden back and forth movement of the neck. It is referred to as whiplash as the nature of the pain and subsequent discomfort resembles the snapping of a whip. The pain is more like a sprain, but not exactly so. This can affect athletes or even any person in general who has faced an accident in recent past. Whiplash is characterized by a tearing of ligaments and tendons that connect one bone to another.

Causes of Whiplash:

  1. Sports that involve contact: Any extracurricular activity involving collisions or other forms of physical contact can cause neck injuries. Football and rugby players frequently suffer from Whiplash.
  2. Road accidents: Public transport has a host of disadvantages. Reckless driving can make the tendons of your neck tear. Auto accidents cause immense strain on your neck; it can also lead to Whiplash.
  3. Any kind of physical abuse: If you have gotten into a violent fight with someone your neck could suffer from a Whiplash. Instances of physical abuse where the neck is jerked or punched at can also result in neck strains. Domestic violence often leads to instances of neck strains.

Symptoms related to this condition:

  1. You may or may not suffer from tinnitus. Tinnitus is a physical disorder where you hear ringing sounds. It is quite distracting.
  2. Your vision might get blurry.
  3. You can experience irregular sleep patterns.
  4. You can find it hard to concentrate on any one thing for more than a while.
  5. You can grow irritable at the drop of a hat.
  6. Your memory may fail you. You might find it next to impossible to trace back a day's activity.

Some of the other direct symptoms are:

  1. Your neck might turn stiff preventing you from moving it left, right, up or down.
  2. Pangs of pain can be felt in and around your shoulders.
  3. Your upper arms can grow numb and tender.
  4. Your head can spin repeatedly or you could feel dizzy.
  5. Whiplash can also result in serious fatigue. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopaedist.

Super Fact of the Day: Women see more colours than men

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Super Fact of the Day: Women see more colours than men
Most humans have three types of receptors that allow them to see in colour vision. However, some women have four or even five receptors, which allow them to see a wider range of colours than normal. This is only present in women as the red and green colour receptors, which allow a greater range of colour, are located in the female x chromosome; blue is stored in the y chromosome in men.

My dad is 70 years and for about 2 weeks now he's finding it difficult to pass out urine and even if it comes out is very small and also whenever he try to urinate, blood comes out of the anus just like that. Please what could be wrong.

Well the complaints you have described can be related to either prostatic hypertrophy which is the most common age related problem in urination, but it gradually increases and is associated with urgency frequency and poor stream of urine which develop over a period of months. Blood in anus is most commonly due to haemorrhoids (piles) which can be/not painful or anal fissure which are very painful. If blood is in initial stool. Passage and like splash in pan it's hemorrhoids. While if it's associated with constipation, pain and only streak of blood comes then it's usually fissures. I recommend you to visit a surgeon nearby for examination.

Hello There are several good homeopathic remedies that could be indicated for infertility, some of the common ones being Nat phos, lyco, acid phos ,ginseng, Damiana, Clematis, Argentum nit, etc. However, in homeopathy, just knowing the name of the illness is not enough. The homeopath needs to know the detailed symptoms of the individual patient, because being unique from everyone else, the symptoms our bodies throw up differ from patient to patient, even for the same medical diagnosis. Hence, you will need to consult me in person for detailed case analysis and remedy selection. You can consult online.

Hi. After 4th month of my first delivery for the first time I suffered from sever lower abdominal pain and body pain during periods. Can you suggest any pain killer for it.

DGO, MBBS

Post delivery when the menstrual cycles start, the cycles can be anovulatory in the beginning which can make the cycles long, heavy and sometimes painful. If the cycles continue to be the same way, consult a gynaecologist and get yourself treated.

This postpartum symptom is the heavy flow of blood and mucus, called lochia, that starts after delivery and continues for up to ten days. Light bleeding and spotting  can continue until four to six weeks after delivery. WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT: 1) For the first six weeks, use only pads, even if you need pads as thick as your baby's diapers. 2) Don't use tampons, which can introduce bacteria into your still-recovering uterus and genital tract.Choose clothes (particularly panties) that you don't care too much about. 3)Wearing your favorites immediately after delivery (even if you could fit into them) might not be such a good idea, since stains from spotting after pregnancy will inevitably happen. 4)Take it easy. Doing too much too soon can slow down the body's repair work and cause bleeding to start again, or to become heavy once it's started tapering off.

Is it normal to have hurt burn constipation and excessive (sometime) white discharge during pregnancy.
Some amount of white discharge is normal in pregnancy and it is more than pre-pregnant state. But if you feel it is excessive better to get it checked by your obstetrician. Constipation, gastritis and urinary infections are more common in pregnancy.
