If symptoms are sneezing, running nose, blocked nose 1. Take proper rest/ lot of fluids 2. Take proper home made diet. 3. Steam inhalation carefully by steam inhaler twice a day for 2-3 days frequent/ continuous cough cold may be because of many reasons like: 1. Any ent problem like dns polyp sinusitis 2. Increase in Fungal infections of Ear with arrival of Monsoon Fungal infection of ear canal, also called as Otomycosis, is a superficial fungal infection of the external auditory canal. It is the most frequently encountered fungal infection in ear, nose and throat clinics. The organisms responsible for this clinical entity are usually fungi especially A. Niger. The fungi are usually secondary invaders of tissue already rendered susceptible by bacterial infections; physical injury or excessive accumulation of wax in the external auditory canal. The fungus tends to grow in humid, dark and warm areas and ear canal is one of the best places, especially in the rainy season. Excessive use of antibiotic ear drops may also be a cause of fungal infection of the ear. The fungal infection of the ear canal usually presents with a itching, irritation, discomfort, pain and scanty discharge from the affected ear. Patients also complain of feeling of blockage in the ear due to collection of fungal material in the canal. Sometimes irritation is so severe that patients tend to insert pins or sharp material in the canal leading to injury or bleeding from the canal. Pruritus and discharge are the most common symptoms which are usually unilateral but bilateral involvement is also been seen. There is greenish or black fuzzy growth on in the canal resembling wet ‘blotting paper with black dots’, which may fill up the entire canal. Careful drying and cleaning of external auditory canal is the first step in treatment, which is done preferably by suction evacuation by an ENT Specialist. The topical therapy with antifungal or other antimicrobial agents is also necessary. After cleaning the canal, antifungal drops, are given. Because the infection can persist asymptomatically, the patient should be re-evaluated at the end of the course of treatment.

Hi Why do I have a constant buzzing in my both ears from last few days .Please help

MS - ENT, DNB (ENT)
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Buzzing sound in the ear is called tinnitus. There are many causes, including wax in the ears, secondary to a bad cold, related to medication, following a trauma or injury, due to some inner ear problem etc. It is best to get this evaluated by an ent specialist, along with getting an audiogram test. In the meantime, avoid loud places. Treat a cold if you have one, and if you are on any medication ask the prescribing doctor if te medicine could be causing this. Regards.

Sinusitis - Conditions That Lead to It!

Sinusitis - Conditions That Lead to It!

Sinuses are cavities in our skull behind the nose which spread out in a pattern. These cavities are lined with tissues and mucosal membranes and are essential for our breathing process. Sinusitis is a condition where the tissues within the cavities become inflamed which results in the sinus cavities being blocked due to a buildup of fluid.

What are the conditions that can lead to sinusitis?
Some of the conditions that can cause nasal polyps are explained as follows:

  1. Nasal polyps are small growths of tissue within the lining of the nose which may block the sinuses, resulting in sinusitis.
  2. Common cold is also a culprit which may result in sinusitis
  3. If your septum or the bridge between the holes of the nose is deviated (this condition is referred to as a deviated septum), you may be prone to developing sinusitis.
  4. The lining of the nose may swell in a condition known as allergic rhinitis and cause sinusitis as well.

Types of sinusitis
There are multiple types of sinusitis which may affect people and also on how long they last. The various types of sinusitis are explained below:

  1. Acute sinusitis: This is the most common form of sinusitis that lasts usually between 2 to 4 weeks. It starts with a cold, blocked nose and turns into facial pain that usually starts very suddenly.
  2. Chronic sinusitis: This is a form of sinus infection which can have a debilitating effect on your life and may last for 12 weeks or longer.
  3. Sub-acute sinusitis: This is somewhere between acute and chronic sinusitis and may last from anywhere between 4 to 12 weeks.
  4. Recurrent sinusitis: This form of sinus infections tend to be a variation of acute or sub-acute sinusitis which tends to occur multiple times a year.

Symptoms of sinusitis
The manifestation of the symptoms of sinusitis may be different from person to person and also on the type of sinusitis you are suffering from. However, there are some generic symptoms that are common to all forms which are mentioned as follows:

  1. Smelling senses may be dulled
  2. Facial pain
  3. Congestion accompanied by a cough
  4. Nose may be blocked, stuffy and may also be runny
  5. Other symptoms may also include bad breath, fatigue, or even dental pain
  6. Nasal cavity may have pus and it may drain from time to time

It is best to consult a doctor quickly, if you have been having any of these symptoms. The doctor can prescribe nasal decongestants and antibiotics which can help. If you have chronic or recurrent sinusitis, then more aggressive and advanced treatments may be required. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ent Specialist.

How to know sinus or dust allergy .I have both symptoms .doctor prescribed me levocetirizine tab. Still I have same problem.

MS - ENT,MBBS
ENT Specialist, Kolkata
Dust allergy is partly genetic and partly environmental. Thus it never goes away. With better ,less dusty environment  the extent if the problem gets reduced. Medicines help to downregulate the immune response of your body to these environmental allergens. Long term lifestyle  changes with gradually tapering medication  helps to tackle chronic sinus problems.  Start taking Steam inhalation twice a day. *For chronic allergic rhinosinusitis you will need to take a long term course of antibiotics  together  with Nasal sprays . *You will need to avoid dusty environment  and dust mites, animal dander etc. Regular cleaning of AC air filters. Wearing mask while driving 2 wheelers/working in dusty  areas Medical  management  is done for 3 months and then patients  condition is reviewed.  Intermittent treatment is not beneficial  in the long run. Around 30 %of people with allergic rhinitis  will develop Asthma if not treated .But majority of patients with asthma are allergic to dust .Active treatment  of nasal allergy reduces Asthma attacks and medicine requirements. This improve  quality of life .allergens.
