Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It would have been better if you had given actual fasting, PP glucose values and HbA1c%, instead of saying "diabetes is in control" Because I am not aware what according to you is good control. Ideally fasting glucose should be < 100 mg, PP should be 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% < 6.8. In many persons Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a condition observed alog with diabetes and being overweight. You are close to being in grade 1 obesity with a BMI of 29 kgs/M2 (normal < 23 kgs/M2). In such a situation it is necessary to give a closer look at your lipid profile, liver function tests and dietary intake. Items like egg yolk, red meat, chicken need to be reduced. Plus one has to look at total dietary intake and extent of exercise. Also let me know if you indulge in alcohol intake and smoking. Plus let me know what are the drugs being used for diabetes with dosage. As regards prostate enlargement you will have to go by the surgeons opinion and treatment advised. Thanks.

High blood sugar makes you prone to infection. Unless you control it, infection will recur. Check urine routine to confirm. Check fasting and pp blood sugar. Change meds if needed.

Dear lybrate-user, while your concern for using insulin is valid, but it seems you are putting him at risk associated with uncontrolled diabetes. You have to understand that at some point oral meds will be insufficient to controll blood sugar hence insulin is needed which is most effective way. Uncontrolled blood sugar can lead to too many longterm complications like stroke, heart attack, loss of vision, leg ulcer etc. My advice would be to follow your physician advice even if it means starting insulin.

Hello, Thanks for the query. If Safi has a syrupy base, then it will contain a good amount of sugar. So better to be careful with it. As regards its benefits I have really no idea. Basically according to modern science human blood is always pure form. If blood gets toxins then that would result in multiple complications and various diseases. This concept of blood purification is typically a traditional medical practice one. So I will not be able to comment on it. According to me our blood can contain any toxins or say "it becomes impure" Thanks.

My mother is 65 years old. Recently she has been diagnosed with sugar pp of 156. My question is can she eat sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes as I have read somewhere that sweet potato is regarded super food for diabetes.

Thanks for the query. Sweet potato like potato is having mainly carbohydrate. It also gives a lot of sugar. Therefore, eating it regularly is not at all advisable for a diabetic person. It does have some advantages over potato, but occasional consumption is fine that too in small quantity. Thanks.

Can Exercise Help Control Blood Sugar Levels?

Master of Science in Counselling and Family Therapy (pursuing), BPTh/BPT, zumba fitness - sports nurtionist

Can Exercise Help Control Blood Sugar Levels?

It is an established fact that regular physical exercise has wonderful effects on the overall health of a person. People of all ages can reap the benefits of exercise that take manifestation in all the various systems of the human body.

One such healthy effect of exercise is that it can help control blood sugar levels. For those who have been diagnosed with diabetes, exercise works like any other drug in keeping blood glucose at an optimal level. It also helps in preventing further health complications that may be caused by this condition, such as heart disease or strokes.

How does exercise control blood sugar?

Exercise affects the body's blood glucose levels in the following ways:

  • Exercising increases insulin sensitivity, which makes the body more capable of using insulin to take up available excess glucose in the bloodstream.
  • Muscle contractions during exercise stimulate the cells to use up glucose to produce energy.
  • Heightened cardiovascular activity while exercising burns through blood glucose a lot faster.

It is necessary to keep checking blood sugar levels at regular intervals, especially if you suffer from diabetes. Working out has different effects on different individuals, depending on the duration and intensity of exercise and the overall health and medical history of the person.

What are the best ways to use exercise to reduce blood sugar levels?

It is important to chalk out a suitable exercise routine that is tailored specifically to your individual needs. Consult a health care specialist or physical therapist for formulating the best possible workout regime for your specific requirements.

Most experts recommend engaging in moderately intense exercise for a minimum of 150 minutes in a week.

A few examples of activities that fall under this category are as follows:

  • Brisk walking
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Squats and lunges
  • Stretching exercises
  • Yoga

One thing that diabetes patients should always keep in mind is that over-exercising must be avoided. Excessively strenuous workouts can lead to hypoglycemia (deficiency of blood glucose) which is a highly unsavory condition.
