Hi lybrate-user if you don't want to go for knee transplant operation then the best way to maintain a good lifestyle and your joint mobility is to go for Intensive Physiotherapy. This is the best conservative management where you can work on joint mobility and in building your muscle strength. Body weight is taken by muscles and bones if there is any degenerative changes in the joints then one should focus on muscle strengthening where you build up your muscles to give support to the degenerative joint and you can maintain a good lifestyle.

You can help your back get back to normal by being extra careful about how you use it and doing a few easy, sensible exercises. -stay conscious of how you bend and lift: start the movement from your knees, not your back, when you lift baby, laundry, stroller, etc. -don't hunch over when you're feeding or cooing to your baby. A straight spine is a happier spine. -use a footrest to elevate your feet slightly when sitting. You deserve to put your feet up anyway! -try not to stand for long periods of time. Whenever possible, place one foot on a low stool when standing in order to take some pressure off your lower back. -do hot water fomentation for back pain. -weight management is another important thing for low back and knee pain. Best wishes.

Hello there its an aging process and arthritis is a degenerative changes in joints she will need to take physiotherapy treatment to gain some strength in her leg muscles. And if you want to stop this arthritis changes you can opt for Stem Cell treatment ,its cost effective and very useful. I have a some compression between L4 and L5 as per MRI for the last about 5 years. During walk (occasionally) I feel some difficulty in walking and take rest or I need to sit for about 5 minutes and than feel normal. Please advice if there is any medicine or physiotherapy ? Pramod

DNB, MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Pain in the leg can be due to nerve compression in the back or inadequate blood supply to leg due to vessel compression or narrowing of arteries. Your MRI will have to be seen to evaluate amount of compression. If compression is mild, then an arterial and venous Doppler of both lower limbs will help to assess the blood supply to the legs. The treatment depends on the cause of the pain.

Here are some tips for how to handle your back pain: -stop normal physical activity for the first few days. This will help relieve your symptoms and reduce any swelling in the area of the pain. -Apply heat or ice to the painful area. One good method is to use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours, and then use heat. Take pain relievers medicine. --While sleeping, try lying in a curled-up, fetal position with a pillow between your legs. If you usually sleep on your back, place a pillow or rolled towel under your knees to relieve pressure. -Find a mattress with back support. A good mattress should provide support for the natural curves and alignment of the spine. Medium-firm mattresses usually provide more back pain relief than firm mattresses. -Do not perform activities that involve heavy lifting or twisting of your back for the first 6 weeks after the pain begins. -Avoid bending forward and sitting in a place for long time -Good posture plays a key role in your spine health, helping to prevent additional back and neck pain and even injuries to spinal structures. Try to be aware of your posture and make good posture part of your normal routine. -head up, shoulders back, rear tucked under -Stand and walk with correct posture -Sit with support -Lift and carry carefully -And finally, keep moving:-Maintaining a static position for too long—more than twenty or thirty minutes at a time—is hard on the back. Prolonged static posture can slowly deplete elasticity from the tissues. By simply moving—be it a change of position, a stretch, or a short walk—the tissue elasticity needed to protect your joints can be restored and the associated discomfort reduced. -Stretching and strengthening exercises are important. But, starting these exercises too soon after an injury can make your pain worse. -Some Physiotherapy treatment like IFT current can give you relief. -Consult a Physiotherapist for detail assessment and management of your back pain. Best wishes.
