My baby is 25 days old and every time she passes gas or even otherwise little poops comes out. Her normal poops are abut 3 to 4 times per day but this small ones means I am changing her nappy in every five minutes. Please advise is this normal or not.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), DNB (Pediatrics), FACEE PEDIATRICS
Pediatrician, Allahabad
Yes this is normal. Some of neonate and infant passes little amount of stool with gas. And some of them has increase intestinal motality upto three to four month so thay used t pass more requent stool. Concern will arise if he is not gaining weight, decrease feeding, dull look, decrease urination frequency and amount.

I have 7 th month baby boy. He is having stools from yesterday and there is some blood in his stools. What is the reason for this and what happens if it comes like that?

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), DNB (Pediatrics), MNAMS (Membership of the National Academy), MRCPCH, Certificate in GI Endoscopy
Pediatrician, Delhi
I think by blood you mean that stool has got something red in it. I would advise you to first get the stool tested for blood at a pathology lab near you. Blood in an infant's stool could be because of intestinal infection if feed hygiene is improper. Another important cause would be a small mass of tissue called polyp inside the intestine. If stool test confirms the presence of blood, please see a paediatrician in person.

My son who is 4 and a half is having frequent cough and cold issues. His immunity is quite week. He was on anti-biotic for a longer time. Doctor was giving him- allegra, montair junior, ambrolite -d.his cough is very productive. I am sick of giving him medicines now. Please help.

MBBS, MD, DM - Neonatology
Pediatrician, Delhi
Your concern is jenune, your baby might have hypersensitive airway, just go through a detailed physical examination, respiratory function test. It might be due to environmental exposure of so many allergent, toxic fumes. Yiu just checked your child with pediatric pulmonologist and stick to the treatment. Bcz childhood Asthama is a chronic disease, only prevented no cure. It resolves spontaneously if you prevent its recurrent attack with lifestyle chane, environmental& behavioural modification with some medication.

At 11 yrs of age deciduous teeth or milk teeth are still there and all teeth have chronological age that is they have individual time of falling and eruption so hence don' t worry.

My son is going to be seven this August. He suffers from season change/temperature change (sitting in car with a. C on) allergy which leads to stuffy nose very often. This has been happening since around 2.5 years. How to deal with it?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Ghaziabad
Dear , as you yourself have observed, your son has what v call allergic rhinitis (in other words, he has allergy, one factor being sudden temp change. Since he has this for over 2 years, he might have to be given specific nasal sprays. But please start these only under medical supervision. One good news is, this condition can disappear by itself, as it appeared! gud luck!

The Proper Way to Brush Your Teeth !

Blog by Dr Ratnika Agarwal at Smile Up Dental Care & Implant Center ,Pune .We provide Dental & Cosmetic Treatments for all age groups.

Many of us were taught how to properly brush our teeth when we were still young kids.

And, admit it or not, most of us are stuck with the same brushing method into adulthood.

Sadly, many of us also learned the improper way of brushing.

Indeed, even though we are taught the proper brushing technique, we may not often stick to it.

Did you know that brushing properly is tricky? We wish to get rid of plaque without damaging our gums and brushing too hard.

So, what are the correct ways to brush our teeth by Dr Ratnika Agarwal ?

  • Brush lightly.

The teeth and gums must be brushed gently as hard brushing may cause the gums to recede and get damaged. It is advised to hold the toothbrush the same manner you hold a pen. By doing so, a lighter stroke is encouraged.

  • Brush your teeth at least two times per day.

Brush in the morning and at night before you head to bed. In so doing, food particles are removed. Brushing in the morning will aid clear away the plaque that accumulated overnight. It is important to dry before you sleep because this is the period when the mouth becomes dry and it becomes easier for bacteria to attack the teeth.

  • Use an extra-soft or soft-bristled toothbrush.

By means of using these types of toothbrush, the teeth and gums won’t be harmed and abraded. It matters to change your toothbrush when necessary or on a regular basis. Shredded or worn out toothbrush are no longer effective in cleaning the teeth. Be smart in choosing a toothbrush and only purchase the one that is officially approved by the American Dental Association.

  • Brush your teeth for at least two minutes.

Two minutes is actually the required time to clean the teeth. This way, each tooth is thoroughly cleaned. You may consider using a timer if you are using a manual toothbrush.

  • Do not brush your teeth more than 3 times per day.

Brushing twice daily is already enough. Take note that brushing too frequently can damage or erode the teeth and gums.

  • Electric toothbrushes are good alternative to manual toothbrushes.

These are often recommended to people who do not often follow correct brushing techniques. In the same way, these are great options for individuals with physical limitations and find brushing a tough activity.

  • Have a standard routine for brushing

It is fundamental to brush the teeth in the same order on a daily basis. The reason behind this is that this can especially aid you cover each area of the mouth. This will easily become second nature once you’re able to perform it routinely.

For instance, you may brush the outer sides of the teeth from left to right across the top, afterwards, you may shift to the inside and then brush from right to left. After this, consider brushing the chewing surfaces from left to right. Do the same pattern for the teeth underneath.

As you can see, there are proper ways of brushing. So, do not just brush your teeth for the sake of brushing alone. Learn the proper techniques to keep the gums and teeth clean and in good condition.

My 3 year old is sick with a temperature of 100 degrees she can not keep anything down including liquids. What should I do?

MD Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Hyderabad
Try to keep the temperature normal by giving paracetamol syrup every 4-5 hours. Generally children tend to get irritable when temperature shots up so try to keep it normal, once temperature is normal, children will be active and playful.

ADHD: Symptoms, Causes and Prevention

ADHD: Symptoms, Causes and Prevention

ADHD or Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder refers to those psychological disorders, which significantly alter a child's behavior and considerably affects his or her relationships with others. This condition is seldom preceded by perceptible symptoms and even when they do, they are difficult to decipher. However some of them are:

  1. Self-centered: Those children who suffer from the attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome tend to be encapsulated in their own subjectivity. Though this does seem harmless apparently, this tendency may lead them to be insensitive to other's needs and wants.
  2. Emotional outbursts: ADHD makes children extremely susceptible to frequent emotional outbursts and makes them erratic.
  3. Difficulty in concentration: Children who suffer from ADHD face extreme difficulty in concentrating or focusing on things. Many a times they fail to repeat what was told to them.

There might be several causes which can contribute to the development of this disorder. Some of them are:

  1. A drastic change in the child's lives: A sudden or a drastic change like the divorce of parents may severely affect the child and maim him emotionally. This may lead to the development of this disorder.
  2. Depression: Though always associated with adults, depression can be and is common among children as well. In such instances, a consequent development of ADHD is highly plausible.
  3. Bipolar disorder: Bipolar disorder refers to excessive and incomprehensible mood swings. Many children suffer from it in their early lives, making them susceptible to ADHD.

Notwithstanding the ambiguity and the erratic nature of the disorder, there might be preventive measures which parents might adopt to deter the outbreak of the disorder. Some of them are:

  1. Less use of preservatives: Parents must be careful about what their children eat. Those foods which contain a certain amount of preservatives tend to aggravate the disorder thereby causing more harm than good.
  2. Consider alternative forms of medications: Another way of dealing with this problem is by exploring other forms of medications and not sticking to one form. In this respect, practicing yoga may be very beneficial.

Lactation is associated with mother's health, diet and mental health. So first of all take proper rest, take healthy balance diet, take more milk and do not get tense (it may reduce your milk production). Give only breast milk to child upto 6 month. General Physician,
You simply refuse to breast feed and when the child feels hungry you feed from a cup with spoon or a sipper but do not use nipple and bottle. You can pit a bana aid on nipple and she will refuse to suck seeing the difference from normal nipple
