How ICSI Can Help You Get Pregnant?

MBBS, MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
IVF Specialist, Delhi
How ICSI Can Help You Get Pregnant?

There are many reasons leading to infertility, but one of the main causes is the inability of the sperm to travel all the way up to the uterus to fertilize an egg. This is caused by defective sperms and could be due to poor sperm quality, poor motility, etc. There are multiple reasons for this, and even smoking, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, etc. could be reasons.

Many technical advancements in fertility treatments are being done, and they try to keep the natural process of fertilization intact, at the same time improving the chances of success. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI, often used as a standalone term iksee) improves the rate of fertilization in that the sperm is directly injected into the egg. The environment of this artificial fertilization is completely controlled, and the fertilized egg is then placed into the womb for further growth. It is one of the recent methods of improving fertility, a part of ART (assisted reproductive technology).

Indications:

  1. Poor sperm perms motility

  2. Semen where sperm concentration is low

  3. Male infertility with unidentifiable cause

  4. Poor sperm quality, with sluggish sperms

  5. Ejaculation issues, such as retrograde ejaculation (semen is ejected into the bladder)

  6. Useful in couples who have failed IVF.

What to expect?

The following outlines some of the steps for both male and female before and during the procedure.

Before the procedure - males:

  1. First step is the sperm collection; a screening is first done

  2. Sperms collection happens through either masturbation or directly from the testicles via a small incision

  3. Sperms could be collected fresh or collected and frozen for later use

Before the procedure – women:

  1. In the normal menstrual cycle, only a single egg is released. However, prior to ICSI, the woman is given ovulation drugs, which are high-dose hormone injections prior to ovulation. This ensures multiple eggs are released, which are then retrieved for fertilization in the external environment.

  2. Blood and urine are monitored regularly to identify the ovulation time, and eggs are collected within 24 to 36 hours of release

During the procedure - How ICSI happens:

  1. A healthy egg is chosen and placed in a glass tube, and a sperm is introduced to ensure fertilization

  2. This could be repeated in multiple tubes, and the most healthy one could be chosen to be implanted into the uterus

  3. Some of the fertilized ones could be frozen for later use, in case the implanted embryo fails to grow as expected

  4. The success rate for this procedure is quite high as the fertilization rate is almost 80 - 85 %. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an IVF specialist.

Is the periods of girl can be shifted after eating an ipill? If yes in how many days the periods will occur. Is there any chances of pregnant if it will not occurs?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Gurgaon
Hi lybrate-user. Yes taking I pill severely alters the hormonal balance and can cause delay in periods. There is no fixed time after which one should expect her periods. It's variable for everyone. It can take anywhere from 5 days late to 2 months late. I would suggest you do a pregnancy test if her period is delayed by 2 weeks. If negative we can start her on medicines to resume her periods.

Wait for some more time before pregnancy test . Pregnancy is unlikely, though. Definite opinion can't be given without looking at her.

Dear user. To TEST PREGNANCY AT HOME simply add urine to a small piece of soap, if froth forms, or if the soap bubbles up, the test is positive. Mix ¼ cup of tuna juice and ¼ cup of vinegar in a plastic cup. Now pee in a separate cup and then add your urine to this mixture. After a few minutes, if the color changes to green, then you are pregnant. Take care.

Tumours always do not cause problems in conception. There may be some problems in other parts of you or your husband. Get the diagnosis and treat it first.

World Brain Tumor Day - 6 Tips To Help You Prevent Yourself Against It!

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine, Fellow in Pain Management, DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Delhi
World Brain Tumor Day - 6 Tips To Help You Prevent Yourself Against It!

June is known as the Brain Tumour Month worldwide. It’s worthwhile to raise public awareness and educate people about brain tumour, a disease which, though is rare is but can be really deadly. More than 500 new cases are diagnosed with brain tumour every day worldwide. The number of patients with secondary tumours are even higher than 500. However, it is common across all ages.  A primary brain tumour is a tumour that begins in the brain. It can be either malignant, which means it contains cancer cells or benign i.e. does not contain cancer cells. A secondary or metastatic brain tumour is usually cancerous. It starts elsewhere in the body and sends cancerous cells which grow in the brain.

Here are a few facts that each one of us should know about this dangerous disease

  1. Brain tumours can occur at any age.
  2. We don’t know what causes brain tumors. Family history and high dose radiation like X-rays increases your risk.
  3. Doctors group brain tumors by grade which means the way the brain cells look under a microscope. A higher grade number means the cells appear more abnormal and the more aggressively the tumour usually behaves.
  4. Brain tumors are graded as grade I, grade II, or grade III, or grade IV.

Symptoms
The symptoms of brain tumour depend on the size, type, and location of the brain tumour. Some common symptoms which should not be ignored are-

  1. Headaches
  2. Seizures
  3. Problems with vision
  4. Vomiting
  5. Mental and personality changes
  6. Balance problems and trouble walking
  7. Problems in speaking

Diagnosis
Brain tumours are diagnosed by the doctor based on the medical history and physical examination along with a slew of specialized tests of the brain and nervous system.

Treatment

  1. Surgery
  2. Radiation therapy
  3. Chemotherapy
  4. Anti-seizure medicines
  5. Steroids
  6. Ventricular peritoneal shunt
  7. Combination of treatments

How can you safeguard yourself?
The primary tool to prevent brain tumours is by controlling your lifestyle. This means eating healthy, exercising, avoiding known carcinogens in your environment, and reducing stress.

  1. Sleep: Sleep is a friend for brain health. An adequate amount of rest with eyes shut keeps your brain health.
  2. Frankincense oil: Along with yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises to reduce stress, inhaling frankincense oil can help alleviate inflammation in the brain.
  3. Anti cancer diet: Consuming a diet rich in cancer-fighting nutrients like antioxidants is critical in preventing brain tumors.
  4. Ketogenic diet: A ketogenic diet is a high protein diet. It reduces oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain which is associated with brain tumours. It also shuts down the nutrient supply to tumors.
  5. Calorie restriction: Dietary restriction, especially fasting has anti-carcinogenic properties just as the ketogenic diet.
  6. Limit exposure to mobile phones: Cell phones use increases risk for brain tumours. So restriction prevents these tumours. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Neurologist.

Please note that there are several factors for such issue: •Interpersonal relationship issues. Partner performance problems, lack of emotional satisfaction with the relationship, the birth of a child, and becoming a caregiver for a loved one can decrease sexual desire. •Sociocultural influences. Job stress, peer pressure, and media images of sexuality can negatively influence sexual desire. •Low testosterone. Testosterone affects sexual drive in both men and women. Testosterone levels peak in women's mid-20s and then steadily decline until menopause, when they drop dramatically. •Medical problems: Mental illnesses such as depression, or medical conditions, such as endometriosis, fibroids, and thyroid disorders, impact a woman's sexual drive both mentally and physically. •Medications: Certain antidepressants (including the new generation of SSRIs), blood pressure lowering drugs, and oral-contraceptives can lower sexual drive in many ways, such as decreasing available testosterone levels or affecting blood flow. The cause needs to be identified and then treated. Use lubricant both of you for better sex.

I got recently married (on 29th Jan 2016) and around that time I was taking pills to stop periods. The pills were taking after consulting a doctor. Since that i'm experience that my body becomes very hot during nights, when we are sleeping. Any specific reason why this is happening and to whom should I consult.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Getting hot at noght after marriage is a result of hormones secreted by your body in response to sexual activity. It has no relation with the pill you took in january.

EIF seen in left ventricle of the babies heart. She said it is a light marker. I am 31 year old, 5 month pregnant. What is this EIF and how it effects my child.

MBBS
General Physician, Greater Noida
Hello lybrate-user eif means echogenic intracardiac focus it is a small bright spot seen in baby's heart on usg. It represents deposition of calcium in cardiac muscles. It is found 3-4%normal pregnancies. It has no impact on heart functions. Often resolves by 3rd trimester. Sometimes there is an association between eif and chromosomal abnormality as downs syndrome. If baby has normal chromosome there would be no associated problem to be concerned so sometimes doctor may suggest you for an amniocentesis that is done at15-20 weeks of pregnancy. If an isolated eif, chances are strongly in favour of normal pregnancy outcome. So don't worry be positive. Best of luck.
