Few Causes of Sciatica You Need To Know!

Sciatica refers to the pain one experiences due to the irritation or compression of nerve roots contributing to formation of Sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the body, running from the lower back, down to the back of each leg. The pain can occur in the lower back and spread to the hips, buttocks and leg. Sciatica generally affects one side of the body. There are numerous causes of irritation of the sciatic nerve and sciatica.

Some of them are:

  1. Spinal Stenosis: The narrowing of the spinal canal caused by natural wear and tear of the vertebrae (individual bones in the spine protecting underlying nerves) of the spine is known as spinal stenosis. The narrowing may put pressure on the roots of the sciatic nerve, causing pain.
  2. Herniated Disc: A disc is made up of cartilage and acts as a cushion between vertebrae, allowing flexibility of the spine. A herniated or slipped disc occurs when a disc is temporarily pushed out of place, putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  3. Spondylolisthesis: It is a condition where one of the lower vertebrae slips forward over another. This also causes a collapse of the disc space between both, causing the nerve to get pinched. This may cause sciatica.
  4. Piriformis Syndrome: Piriformis is a muscle found deep inside the buttocks, which connects the lower spine to the upper thighbone, running directly over the sciatic nerve. Spasming of this muscle can pressurize the sciatic nerve, triggering symptoms of sciatica.
  5. Sacroilitis: Sacroillac joints are the place where the lower spine meets the pelvis and inflammation of one or both of these joints causes sacroilitis. This can give rise to symptoms of sciatica as it causes pain in the lower back, buttocks and legs.
  6. Spinal tumors: Very rarely, tumors growing inside or along the spine may put pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  7. Infection or injury: Muscle inflammation, infections, fractures or any other spinal injury may lead to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.
  8. Pregnancy: Pregnant women may suffer from sciatica due to weight gain, expansion of the uterus or increased fluid retention or other changes occurring in the body, which put pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  9. Other causesOsteoarthritis and fractures caused by osteoporosis may also affect the sciatic nerve, producing symptoms of sciatica. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Neurosurgeon.

It is a vaat disorder, means problem caused by vayu aggravation. You must hv a vaat pacifying diet and life style bcs its not too late. +warm food, moderately heavy textures, added butter and fat. +salt, sour, and sweet tastes; soothing and satisfying foods. +all soothing foods are good for settling disturbed vata. Use foods such as: warm milk, cream, butter, warm soups, stews, hot cereals, fresh baked bread. Since vata is a cold dry dosha, warm, nourishing foods such as these are good for stabilizing vata. On the other hand cold foods such as cold salads, iced drinks, raw vegetables and greens are not very good for persons with vata imbalance. +breakfast is highly recommended. Use hot cereals such as cream of rice or wheat or any other breakfast that is warm, milky, and sweet. +take a hot or herbal tea with snacks in the late afternoon. Avoid drinks with high caffeine as vata gets disturbed by it. +use spicy foods such as spicy mexican or indian foods that are cooked in oil. +use warm moist foods such as cooked grains and cereals, bowl of hot oatmeal or cup of steaming vegetable soup. +warm milk is good. You can add a little sugar or honey to it if you prefer. Avoid eating candies as it disturbs vata. +prefer salted nuts that are heavy and oily as opposed to dry salty snacks. +all sweet fruits are ok for vata. Avoid unripe fruits as they are astringent +take warm or hot water instead of ice water and drinks. +summary: breakfast is usually desirable. Hot foods and sweet and sour tastes. Reduce dry foods and bitter tastes. Warm or hot water and drinks. Raw nuts and nut butters. Spices: cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, ginger, cloves in moderation.

Hello. Maintain a right standing and sitting posture, keep your back always straight, avoid carrying weight on back. Hold or carry weight divided equally in both the hands or shoulders (to avoid over straining on one particular hand or shoulder). Lie down on bed on your back without pillow. Exercise: Practice Shavasana or Corpse Pose as it looks like a dead body. If practiced correctly and with full efforts, can relax every body part, relaxing not only the body but also the mind: Spread the legs one to two feet apart, the toes are turned outwards, the heels facing each other, a comfortable distance apart. Bring the arms a little away from the body, palms turned upward. Relax the neck and allow it to turn to the side if it is more comfortable. Close the eyes and focus the attention on the body, breathing normally. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicines - Arnica 200 and Rhus Tox. 200 - take both of them thrice daily for 1 week. Also, apply Schwabe's Topi-Arnica and Topi MP Gel on the affected area in circular motions gently thrice a day. Get back to me thereafter.

Kindly show me photograph of the affected part. Rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Use no pillow under the head. Kindly take biod3 max 1 tab dailyx10 paracetamol 250mg od & sos x5days do back (spine)/shoulder/knee exercises make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take do not ignore it. It could be beginning of a serious problem. If no relief in 4_5 days, then contact me again.

Hello. I'm Trimaya & from past few weeks I'm experiencing an unusual feeling in my right knee. When I sit & stand, a crack type sound comes. I don't feel pain while walking. I can run too. But sometimes sitting in car in a stable position for an hour my right knee pains a little until I readjust. While doing sit up exercise I feel a little pain in knee & that crack type sound comes every time I stand. Please share what exactly is the problem and give some advices! Thanks.

The knee is a complex joint with a number of forces acting on it. With the details that you have already given with the question,its is quite likely that you are suffering from the patellofemoral syndrome. This happens due to reduced tone and power of the quadriceps mechanism of muscle. Hello, Is there any history of injury or hurt to the area? Any underlying medical condition? Medication: Meantime, take homoeopathic medicines - Arnica 200 and Rhus Tox. 200 - take both of them thrice daily for 1 week. Also, apply Schwabe's Topi-Arnica and Topi MP Gel on the affected area in circular motions gently thrice a day. And wrap crepe bandage over it. Do you use computer for long hours? Mr Ramiz lets get it clear that gas causes pain mostly in abdomen not generally in chest or back.second thing exersises are not going to help u much in gas problem instead medicins n precaution might help u. Avoid spices n tea and drink water after 30 mint aftet food For back pain do backward extension exercises.

First of all you mentioned" therapy" does that stands for physiotherapy because now a days quack / fake physios are there in market selling chyong india, seregeum therapy, claiming themselves Dr. I would suggest you to visit the best physio in town. Hello hip, knee, ankle jts are weight bearing joints of body. Less physical activity or sedentary lifestyle, obesity, age related factors. Overweight causes weight bearing joints prone to overstressed and limited or restricted movements. You must start knee joint exercises first follow by few mins walk on smooth surface. Upper body exercises in sitting or lying.
