How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

Mouth breathing in children is very common and while a kid with open mouth might seem cute, it is not always the case. The parents need to be made aware that a child breathing through the mouth all the time is not normal and it is high time they find a way to manage it.

A little understanding of the effects of the mouth breathing habit on the child's health in general and oral health in particular can be an eye-opener for the parent. For an educated person, there are obvious symptoms, which indicate that the child is a mouth-breather.

These symptoms include:

  1. Dryness of the lips
  2. Crowding of the front teeth
  3. Snoring
  4. Sleeping with the mouth open
  5. Recurrent infections of the airways including sinusitis and middle ear infections
  6. Bad breath

Common causes include:

  1. Chronic nasal obstruction/congestion because of which the child is not able to get enough oxygen through the nose.
  2. Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  3. Thumb or finger-sucking habit
  4. Recurrent respiratory infections

Effects of mouth breathing on oral health:

Mouth breathing may seem like a harmless habit, but has serious effects on the oral and dental health of the child. Some of them are discussed below.

  1. Dry mouth: A constantly open mouth can lead to drying up of the saliva. This in turn leads to reduced effects of saliva including the flushing effect on the bacteria and the food deposits. This leads to increased chances of tooth decay and gum diseases.
  2. Tooth decay: With reduced saliva, the pH remains acidic for a longer period of time, leading to increased chances of tooth decay.
  3. Gum diseases: Reduced amounts of saliva also leads to increased gum disease and periodontal disease as the bacteria are not removed and have a conducive environment to act upon.
  4. Facial development: A mouth breathing child maintains a different posture than a nose breather. This leads to a narrow and long face, flattened nose, smaller nostrils, reduced facial tone, thin upper lip, pouty upper lip, and a small lower jaw.
  5. Speech: An open mouth causes the tongue to thrust into the palate when talking. This leads to altered pronunciation of some sounds; especially and can cause lisping.
  6. Braces: Mouth breathing causes multiple challenges including prolonged treatment period, inability to close the gaps, reduced stability of the realigned teeth, and increased chances of relapse. The added complication of increased gum disease and tooth decay makes it worse. The habit needs to be corrected first before going in for braces.

If that sounds like a long list, they are not all inclusive. Early intervention in the habit can correct and negate all these effects. Talk to your dentist to know how to help your mouth breathing child.

Hello dear doc. My13 year old daughter (not pubic now, her ultrasound is ok) faint twice at school while playing in hot day. We haven't seen any symptoms of fits but as she awake after half an hour our doctor suggested test of vitamin d, EEG,MRI. After test vitamin d level show 25 in report MRI normal, EEG abnormal so neurologist suggest medicine. But before started it ,we again did EEG from other famous diagnostic centre but dis time EEG report is normal. It's really surprising in 5 days. One report shows abnormal other shows normal. Now being a mother I am really confuse. Wat to do or. Not to do.

Report of any test whether it is eeg or any other, is to be correlated with clinical findings. If faint is not suggestive/ leading clue to epilepsy type ailment, even abnormal report should not be discarded outright. Get an other eeg done and consult pediatrician. Fainting is not necessarily epilepsy. Its diagnosis solely depends on nature of faintness since there is no sign of this disease. In this case faint may be due to hot weather leading to dehydration.

My nephew is 5 years old. He is able to read well but reluctant to write. He is not willing to write at all. What can be the reason for this and how do we make him write.

It is natural for a kid to have more inclination towards one activity while lack of interest in others. I suggest you to indulge him in some activities that are fun and also pull him for writing, even if it casual. There are many fun toys and games available in the market that might interest him. Also you can reward him with some treats for writing.

One year old child really needs good training, support and patience to learn table manners, I mean food habits. Make meal time and food interesting. Avoid tv, mobiles and tabs during meal time. Include everything in his diet gradually in small amounts as required.

Respected Dr, we have 5 months' baby boy ,,,my wife has problem of low breastfeeding, she's providing powder prescribed as Child specialist, then shall we start boiled milk of cow...for his feeding?

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatrician, Delhi
Most parents believe that the breast milk is insuffiecient. Take weight of the child on a digital weighing machine prior to feeding and immediately after feed. This will convince you that child has got enough milk. . However if the milk is truly less, you can start undiluted, unsweetened boiled cow's milk with katori and spoon.

Which is better.
It is not necessary to use lotion or cream to infant. A simple massage with veg oil like coconut, olive or sun flower oil is quite good.

I have a daughter who is 8 month, 1 week old. My baby has not started teething yet. At present, I have only included brown rice kheer, rawa kheer, dal rice, chikoo and cerelac in her diet. I want to introduce her to new food stuff and want to know what else I can possibly include which will be more nutritious. 1. Are babies also suppose to have a breakfast, lunch, dinner pattern like adults? If yes, then what should be given during these times? 2. What should be the time gap between the three meals? 3. Should we give babies some snacks between the three meals? If yes, then what needs to be given? 4. Can I start her on chicken soup or mutton soup or should I give only vegetable soups for now? 5. If possible could I get a baby growth chart from you which can help me track her growth?

For 8 months old babies require meals every 3-4 hrs once. You can continue breast feeding along with these. You can give chicken. Or mutton or veg soup. But don't give pieces yet. Egg yellow can be added. Ragi. Dal. Rice. Wheat all in thick soups type. Or smashed. Teething for usually starts 8 months-1 yr. 2 months. Whenever the child cries for food you can feed it. Need not wait for 3 hrs to be complete. Every time a bowl of meal is required. Don't force to much neither let to loose.

Hi I have 2 months old baby. And last night we have done unprotected sex. I don't want to be pregnant again. What should I do? if I use any pills, won't it harmful my 2 months old baby who is feeding my milk? please help.

Pediatrician, Pune
If you are breastfeeding that itself acts as a contraception, if you had sex during safe period that is 7 days after your menses or 7 days before your menses, chances of pregnancy are less but do consult your gyanecologist before taking any pills.
