My 5-year-old daughter has asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer long-term? Iheard that using it for years might cause boneshrinkage. Is it true?

PGP In Diabetologist, Fellowship in non-invasive Cardiology, MD - Medicine, MBBS
Endocrinologist, Delhi
Yes, steroids can cause demineralization of the bones, a condition known as osteoporosis. Though inhaled steroids are much safer; but long term use can lead to the same. Vitamin d and calcium levels should be monitored and bone mineral density (noninvasive) scan can be performed. Revert back with reports asap.

Start taking steam and do gargles on a regular basis. Possibly you are suffering from allergic sinusitis. It is advisable if you can also keep a humidifier in your room. It will work any more queries then feel free to revert.

I am the patient of asthma so what should I prefer to eat and what not and any exercise that I should do.

PGDHHM, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
There is no strict/special diet for prevention of asthama. If u r allergic to some foods eg coconut, nuts fried foods, avoid them. Restrict exercise when you have a viral infection, like a cold. Avoid over exertion during acute problem. Avoid pollution or pollens. Avoid over exercising ,keep inhalers ready if u use them. Hope this helps u.

I am suffering from dry cough for the last 2 years and I have chest pain when ever I cough hard. Can you suggest what should be done?

MBBS
General Physician, Cuttack
I am suffering from dry cough for the last 2 years and I have chest pain when ever I cough hard. Can you suggest what...
1. Do a complete blood examination like cbc, esr, mantoux test, x ray chest, sputum examination for afb. 2. Consult chest physician with report. 3. Do warm saline gurgling 3-4 times daily, 4. Avoid smoking if you smoke 5. If all the reports are normal, it could be due to allergy, for which you have do an allergy test after consulting allergist/immunologist 6. Consult me for further advice.
