Advice.
Avoid sitting cross legged.
Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.
Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day.
Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Yes it is harmfull to bear more weight on single leg. There may be so many reasons in this case. May be you have weak left hip joint or may be your left knee has arthiritis that's why your left leg is not taking equal weight. Or weakness of left leg muscles can also be the cause. So first you should visit some orthopedician and get yourself checked and diagnosed properly. A proper diagnosis is must for a proper treament.

Hi lybrate-user. This pain might be due to wear and tear in your knee cartilage which is osteoarthritis. It is the most common problem in elderly age. Walking is fine but if you have pain stop. I would suggest to do cycling which is a better form of exercise in OA knees. Do not squat or sit cross legged and also climbing stairs to minimal. Pain killer you can take for few days etorocoxib 60 mg twice a day for may be 5-7 days. Take an antacid with it. Also get your knee xray done to see what stage is your osteoarthritis. Avoid cross leg sitting prolonged standing and walking, both ankle move up and down 10 times, roll big towel keep it under your knee press it against towel hold 5 to 10 sec 10 repeataion, put up pillow between both knee give inward pressure hol 5 second repeat 10 times, alternate bend straight your knee with foot bed contact 20 times repeat, straight leg raise upto 10 inch hold 5 second repeat 5 times, sit and stand 10 times from bed or chair.
