Will the disease of blood cancer return after stem cell transplant in bone marrow?

Hi, I appreciate you seeking clarification. In some cases, the cancer can relapse despite stem cell transplantation. The chances of a relapse, however, reduces significantly 5 years or more post transplant. Hope this clarifies. Take care. Sincerely,

I am a 62-year-old male. I am suffering from Polycythemia Rubra Vera (due to JAK 2 mutation) for last 8 years. First 3 years I was put on treatment with low level of aspirin, amlodipine and periodic venesection. Last 5 years I am on Hydroxyurea along with the above mentioned drugs. The dose of hydroxyurea is adjusted periodically based on FBC. My questions are: 1. What are the adverse effects of long term treatment with Hydroxyurea? 2. I get occasional muscle cramp. How do I get relief from it? I would like to know 1. What is the adverse drug effect of long term intake of Hydroxyurea. 2. I suffer from painful muscle cramp occasionally. What I should do to get relief from it?

MBBS, PGC IN FAMILY WELFARE &HEALTH MANAGEMENT, DHA, PGD IN MEDICAL LAWS ÐICS
General Physician, Kolkata
Every drug has side effects. Use is based on benefits vis -a -vis side effects. Hydroxy urea is well used in blood disorders, specially of neoplastic variety. Important side effects are -bone marrow depression, gastrointestinal disturbances, impairment of renal function, pulmonary oedema, mild dermatological reactions. Loss of hair and neurological manifestations. Most of muscle cramps, if not very severe can be relieved by stretching the muscle, movements or maintenance of electrolyte balance. Topical muscle relaxants can also be lightly used without massaging,

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Well, it may not be oral cancer yet. I would advise that you get this clinically examined by an experienced dentist. If in doubt still, you can always connect with a head and neck oncologist for 2nd opinion. Additionally, please continue with your good habit of staying away from tobacco products. Streamline your diet and lifestyle, and maintain a good oral hygiene. You can take green tea, twice daily. Hope this helps. You can connect for a suitable naturopathic traction should it require anytime. Do take care and all the very best. Sincerely.

Stay away from direct sunlight. Exposure to too much sunlight can be harmful to the skin. You probably already know that it can cause skin cancer, but did you know that it can exacerbate acne.

Dear sir, if only one ovary is removed and the other one is normal with healthy uterus then there are good chances of having normal fertility. She has to be on regular follow up to ensure that tumour is not relapsing.

If the patient is diagnoses with cancer and he go for the treatment like chemotherapy surgery and radiation and he successfully cured the cancer then why he can not survive for 10 years, is it is because of sideeffect of medicines chemo surgery radiation etc.

MBBS, MD - Medicine, MD - Oncology

Dear lybrate-user, even stage 3 cancer properly treated will give a 50 to 65% of 5 year survival and even more if the patient is in good general condition. I will also suggest immunotherapy after completed treatment which will perhaps give complete cure.

Lung Cancer: Symptoms & Causes

MD PULMONARY, DTCD
Pulmonologist, Faridabad
Lung Cancer: Symptoms & Causes

Lungs are the most important organ of our body that has the responsibility of taking in the oxygen and releasing out carbon dioxide. When cancer develops in it, the entire body gets imbalanced. Lung cancer leads to more death than any other type of cancer, which is why identifying the symptoms and knowing the causes are instrumental in obtaining a timely diagnosis as well as in prevention of this disease.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

In the early stages:

  1. Persistent coughing

  2. Chest pain

  3. Bleeding

  4. Fatigue

  5. Loss of appetite

  6. Sudden weight loss

  7. Headaches

  8. Coughing up blood

In the later stages:

  1. Bone pain

  2. Joint pain

  3. Facial paralysis

  4. Neck swelling

  5. Blood clotting

  6. Weakness

  7. Sever chest pain

Causes of Lung Cancer:

  • Smoking: People who smoke are more prone to lung cancer. With the increase in the number of cigarettes you smoke, your chances of getting lung cancer increase too. People who don't smoke but are surrounded by the smokers also have high chances of being affected by this form of cancer.
  • Exposure to Asbestos: Asbestos is a group of mineral, which is present naturally in the environment. Lung cancer can occur due to the inhalation and ingestion of asbestos fibers.
  • Exposure to Ranon Gas: Ranon is a radioactive gas, which is formed naturally on decaying of radioactive elements. It is found in low levels in the air that we breathe and the water that we drink. Consumption of air and water having this gas leads to lung cancer.
  • High Levels of Air Pollution: Presence of high levels of dust particles and pollutants in the air that we breathe can cause lung cancer. 1-2% of lung cancer is caused because of it.
  • High Levels of Arsenic in Drinking Water: Consuming water with arsenic content is harmful as it directly affects the lungs and when the arsenic content is too high, it may lead to lung cancer.
  • Exposure to Chemicals: Exposure to certain chemicals like uranium, coal products, gasoline, diesel exhaust and mustard gas can also cause lung cancer.

Family History of Lung Cancer: Chances of getting lung cancer increase if your parents, child or siblings are already prone to lung cancer.

What is the causes of blood cancer and its symptoms. How we prevent from blood cancer.

MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
Genetic changes that cause cancer can be inherited from our parents. They can also arise during a person’s lifetime as a result of errors that occur as cells divide or because of damage to DNA caused by certain environmental exposures. Cancer-causing environmental exposures include substances, such as the chemicals in tobacco smoke, and radiation, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun. People who have blood cancer can have problems with bleeding and serious infections. Seek immediate for symptoms such as uncontrolled bleeding, severe sweating, difficulty breathing, pale or blue lips or fingernails, high fever (greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit), fast heart rate, confusion, loss or change in level of consciousness, or anxiety.

Breast Lumps - How Can They Be Treated?

MBBS, MD
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Breast Lumps - How Can They Be Treated?

A breast lump is an enlargement, swell, protuberance or a bump that is different than the breast tissue surrounding it. Breast lumps can appear in men as well as women and they can be benign or malignant. Causes of benign breast lumps are as follows:

  1. Fibroadenosis: Also known as Fibro-cystic breast disease, it is a benign condition that affects the breast. It may affect either of the breasts or both. One of the major symptoms of Fibroadenosis is a breast lump. Usually, the lumpiness disappears after the menstrual cycle is over. Fibroadenosis occurs because the breast tissue doesn’t respond well to the hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle.
  2. Fibroadenomas: Fibroadenomas occur because of abnormal response to the hormone oestrogen. The lumps are usually well formed and round, around the milk ducts of the breast. Breast lumps due to Fibroadenomas are called breast mice, because they move around the breast. In some cases, they disappear and in some, they tend enlarge during pregnancy.

Other benign causes of breast lumps are breast abscesses, breast cysts, lipoma (lump of fat), mastitis (infection in the breast tissues), fat necrosis (another name for breast lumps) and intraductal papilloma (benign tumour of the milk ducts in the breast). A breast lump that is firm, well defined and doesn’t move around, i.e. it doesn’t disappear after your period or pregnancy, may be a result of breast cancer.

Treatment of breast lumps
The treatment of a breast lump depends on its cause. Benign breast lumps usually disappear over time. Otherwise following treatments can be considered as per the doctor’s discretion-

  1. Medication: If the breast lumps are painful or increase over time, it is advisable to take medication.
    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and other painkillers like paracetamol
    • Danazol, Tamoxifen or Bromocriptine are administered to treat breast pain as well
    • Antibiotics which are administered to cure breast abscesses that are caused due bacterial infections
  2. Limiting the amount of fat in the diet or wearing well fitting bras also reduces the amount of pain due to breast lumps.
  3. Certain types of breast lumps are filled with fluid or pus. This fluid can be drained through a procedure called aspiration or drainage.
  4. A radical way to treat a breast lump is surgery. Many a times, these lumps get bigger and painful and the most effective way to deal with it is to remove it. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

One my relative caused with blood cancer multiple myeloma. Is any preventive medicines available nowadays. Already we tried initial chemotherapy treatment.

MS ( General Surgery)
Oncologist, Mandsaur
There’s no cure for multiple myeloma. However, there are treatments that can help ease the pain, reduce complications, and slow the progression of the disease. Treatments are only used if the disease is getting worse. Your doctor is unlikely to suggest treatment if you aren’t experiencing any symptoms. Instead, your doctor will closely monitor your condition for signs that the disease is progressing. This often involves regular blood and urine tests. If you need treatment, common options include the following: Targeted Therapy Targeted therapy medications block a chemical in myeloma cells that destroys proteins, causing the cancer cells to die. The drugs that may be used during targeted therapy include bortezomib (Velcade) and carfilzomib (Kyprolis). Both are administered intravenously, or through a vein in your arm. Biological Therapy Biological therapy medications use your body’s immune system to attack myeloma cells. The pill form of thalidomide (Thalomid), lenalidomide (Revlimid), or pomalidomide (Pomalyst) is usually used to boost the immune system. Lenalidomide is similar to thalidomide, but it has fewer side effects. It also appears to be more potent. Chemotherapy Chemotherapy is an aggressive form of drug therapy that helps kill fast-growing cells, including myeloma cells. Chemotherapy drugs are often given in high doses, especially before a stem cell transplant. The medications may be given intravenously or taken in pill form. Corticosteroids Corticosteroids, such as prednisone and dexamethasone, are often used to treat myeloma. They can balance the immune system by reducing inflammation in the body, so they’re often effective in destroying myeloma cells. They can be taken in pill form or given intravenously. Radiation Therapy Radiation therapy uses strong beams of energy to damage myeloma cells and stop their growth. This type of treatment is sometimes used to kill myeloma cells quickly in a certain area of the body. For example, it may be done when a cluster of abnormal plasma cells form a tumor called a plasmacytoma that causes pain or destroys bone. Stem Cell Transplants Stem cell transplants involve replacing diseased bone marrow with healthy bone marrow from a donor. Before the procedure, blood-forming stem cells are collected from your blood. The multiple myeloma is then treated with radiation therapy or high doses of chemotherapy. Once the diseased tissue can be destroyed, the stem cells can be infused into your body, where they move into the bones and start rebuilding bone marrow. Alternative medicine has become a popular way to cope with the symptoms of multiple myeloma and the side effects of treatment for the condition. While they can’t treat multiple myeloma, you may want to talk to your doctor about: Acupuncture Aromatherapy Massage Meditation Relaxation methods You should discuss any alternative therapies with your doctor before trying them to ensure they’re safe for your health.
