I am 60 years old man. I want to ask how keep control over bp and sugar without having medicines.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
I am 60 years old man. I want to ask how keep control over bp and sugar without having medicines.
Mr. Lybrate-user, if one does not have high bp or hyperglycemia (diabetes), then simple change in lifestyle helps one in keeping bp and blood sugar in control. Modified lifestyle means - regular exercise preferably 1 hour a day (even though 30 minutes is said to be enough), maintaining near normal eight (bmi <23 kgs/m2), taking healthy diet with great deal of green leafy vegetables and salads, eating 2 to 3 servings of fruits a day, using whole grain food products, avoiding refined flours like maida and items made of refined flours like pasta, bread, bakery items, sweets, aerated sweetened drinks (colas), junk foods and pastries. Also refrain from alcohol and smoking. But if diabetes has actually developed similarly if high bp has already set in then drugs are needed along with above mentioned life style modification.

Fasting 110 PP 190 (after 2 hrs) and after 3 hrs 100 and then goes down very fast. Many times he wakes up at midnight due to hypo and sweating as well as trembling. Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. It is a difficult task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (Self-Monitoring of Blood glucose – SMBG). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of Fasting sugar (FBS) and 2 hours after food (PPBS), & HbA1C (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ Insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & life style. For sugar control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance... if you keep in touch personally.

In my view you should have through check up like lft-liver function test, kft- kidney function test, you need surgical or minimal invasive intervention like lithotripsy -using ultrasound shock waves, by which a kidney stone or other calculus is broken into small particles that can be passed out by the body.

Naturally sugar is present in many of foods which we have daily not only rice, potato or sweets. Don't require to eliminate any particular food from your diet. Just avoid simple carbs, sweet products, fruits which are high in sugar content. You need a well balanced diet to manage blood sugar level. You may contact me for detailed diet plan.

Mr Ravi, If hypothyroidism is not well controlled, which evident by TSH levels, then men do develop less desire for sex and erectile dysfunction. So please see that hypothyroidism is well in check. That will possibly increase sexual desire and may reduce the dysfunction.
