Hi, Yes, it can be worn while walking, running, lifting heavy weights, etc. It helps to keep the joint in position. But do not wear it while sleeping; it will hinder the blood flow.

Why do you want to go for knee replacement surgery? knee replacement surgery is the last resort if all necessary actions fail. First of all the diagnosis of knee pain has to be made. At the age of 52 years the most common cause of knee pain is osteoarthritis which can be diagnosed by an x ray. If it is osteoarthritis then along with medications few life style modifications are extremely important. You must avoid sitting on the floor, squatting, stair climbing, prolonged standing or prolonged walking, and you must do exercises for quadriceps strengthening. During walking you shoud use functional knee brace with hinge. If there is swelling rub ice for 15 mins 4 times a day. You can also modify your shoe to reduce pain in knee. Shoe modification is based on knee deformity. Most of the cases need shoe with lateral wedge insole for genu varus and calcaneovarus deformities. If all these measure fail to resolve your pain (provided the case is osteoarthritis) you can go for injections like steroid or high molecular weight hyaluronic acid before going for knee replacement surgery as mentioned earlier knee replacement surgery is the last resort. I answered for osteoarthritis knee, but first of all the diagnosis has to be confirmed. X ray knee joint, routin blood test and few special tests will help to get the doagnosis. Thank you.

Dear lybrate-user, These are common issues - do not get panic. Insomnia can be avoided by healthy habits- daily do exercise 45 minutes, do extra yoga or meditation. Then we will see, Hope you will be better.

I am 40 years, weight is 57 kg suffering joint pains (knee, hills) from last 5 years. I have little gastric problem also. Mainly knees are getting pain when I am going upward/downward on the staircase. At morning when I get up from bed, my hills are getting pain. Now I am taking Amla juice and Aloe vera juice once at morning from 4 months. please help if any ayurvedic remedies/treatment.

Hi I can understand your problem. 1) apply hot and cold foementation. 2) learn strengthening exercise of quadriceps and hamstring from physiotherapist. 3) do regular streching calf muscles. 4) wear comfortable foot wear. Do share investigation reports if you have, in next consultation.

To loose weight: step 1-stop taking sugar & fat e. G. Ghee/fried stuff. Step 2 take a plate of salad before meals step 3 reduce no. Of chapatti gradually.

What should be the diet for osteoarthritis, how to get healthy life. Is it allowed to walk.

There is no specific diet for Osteoarthritis. There is specific diet for health and wellness .For that a detailed dietary history, medical and medication history is required loose weight if over weight control food portions Avoid dairy products. Go on a plant based diet Exercise daily. Eat high fiber food Sleep for at least 8 hours Do Yoga and meditation for specific diet advice take a consult.

Go for proper knee brace, avoid squatting, standing for long hours, keep your leg elevated, start with physiotherapy asap to ensure faster healing.

The main cause is over use. It a wear and tear process. Reduce weight, regular exercises, good balanced diet, proper foot wear, no squatting, no climbing stairs, no crossed leg sitting, no walking on uneven surfaces can minimise the wear and tear process.

Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams Stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports Taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area Contrast Fomentation (Hot and Cold).
