I have a Squint Eye problem from my birth. Can it be treated? What is the possibility of facing the issue again after treatment? Please suggest.

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology
Ophthalmologist, Gandhinagar
Hello lybrate-user. Squint of the eye should be treated ideally at an early age within the time period that the eye learns to read and see. This age period is from 2 to 12 years. At your current age (28 years), it would be possible to treat it for cosmetic reasons. Usually, vision would not improve. Also, a thorough eye evaluation would be necessary to check for the type and cause of squint. Also, it is possible that the squint may recur after the treatment. The time of recurrence would not be possible to predict. Regards.

I have a problem of red eyes in nights and i cant sleep, even after using drops they are not reducing.

Fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology, DOMS
Ophthalmologist, Sangrur
Hello there are many causes for redness of eyes mainly allergy, infection, inflammation and dry eyes etc. 1. Redness + itching: allergy 2. Redness + pain + watering + decreased vision: infection 3. Redness + pain: inflammation 4. Redness foreign body sensation: dryness if there is only redness then it is normal as slight exposure to dust, temperature or air or eyes may be red in morning. Stress may also cause redness. I usually do not treat when there is only redness, you can 1. Blink a lot 2. Wash eyes with fresh water 3. Cold compresses 4. Use lubricating eye drop like flogel these measures will help to keep your eyes healthy but it will not have any effect on redness (treating general redness alone is not necessary also) having said that you should consult local ophthalmologist for proper examination and treatment.

I am 22 years old male. I have a problem in my eyes. Every month my eyes become red. And give too much pain. What should I do?

Fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology, DOMS
Ophthalmologist, Sangrur
Hello, redness of eyes may be caused by several things like an allergy, infection, inflammation and dry eyes, etc. Here are the most likely combinations. 1. Redness + itching: might be caused by allergy 2. Redness + pain + watering + decreased vision: most likely being caused by an infection 3. Redness + pain: there must be an inflammation in the eye. 4. Redness foreign body sensation: this is most likely caused by dryness. Redness alone could be normal due to exposure to dust and temperature where eyes may be red in the morning. Another factor for redness is stress. I would suggest a few remedies for healthy eyes however they may not be effective for redness, they are? try blinking every few minutes? splash your eyes with fresh water? use cold compresses to cool your eyes? use lubricating drops eg flo-gel. This can remove the problem of dry eyes. It is best advised to see an ophthalmologist for examination and treatment.

Iam 22 years old and I have short sight I didn't want to wear spectacles. Can I go for laser treatment and it has any side effects? Please tell me.

FPRS, DNB Ophtalmology
Ophthalmologist, Pune
Lybrate-user you need to undergo pre lasik workup which will include corneal topography. If your corneal thickness is fine and topography is normal, then you can safely go for lasik. Lasik has much predictable results with the current advanced technology. Side effects include dryness and glare for few months which eventually subsides.

I am having a pain in my eyes first in eye from q small dot blur starts And then my whole eye gets blur for few seconds immediately after that my head starts paining. So what's the reason for that?

Mbbs, MS - Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Mumbai
Regarding the dot blurring symtom. It seems you need to rule out dry eye. It needs a test called schirmers test. You need to visit an eye clinic and get tested. Also your intraocular pressure should also be checked.

Please read up on Computer vision syndrome. Follow 2 simple rules - 20-20-20 rule and palming. 20-20-20 rule means after every 20 minutes of computer use for 20 seconds look beyond a distance of 20 feet. If too much of symptoms, consider using a tear substitute/ lubricating eye drops.

I have red eyes from last three days and I can not see clearly so what should I do now?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello, Bloodshot eyes appear red because the vessels at the surface of the white portion of the eye become swollen. Vessels may swell due to: Eye dryness Too much sun exposure Dust or other particles in the eye Allergies Infection Injury Eye infections or inflammation can cause redness as well as possible itching, discharge, pain, or vision problems. Other causes of eye redness include Colds or allergies, Acute glaucoma, Corneal scratches: Injuries caused by sand, dust, or overuse of contact lenses. Sometimes, a bright red spot, called a subconjunctival hemorrhage, will appear on the white of the eye. This often happens after straining or coughing, which causes a broken blood vessel on the surface of the eye. Most often, there is no pain and your vision is normal. It is almost never a serious problem. Because the blood leaks into the conjunctiva, which is clear, you cannot wipe or rinse the blood away. Like a bruise, the red spot will go away within a week or two. Management: - Try to rest your eyes if redness is due to fatigue or eye strain. No other treatment is needed. - Wash your hands, hold clean water in your hand, keep your eyes closer to the water and dip the eyes by blinking the eyelids frequently in the held water in hand. Repeat it for 3-4 times again. - Avoid watching T. V. Working on computer or mobile, reading or frequently keep blinking your eyes to avoid dryness. Take frequent breaks in between. - In case there is itching, use a clean napkin or a tissue to wipe the tears and cleaning the eyelids gently. -Wear an UV-rays protected sunglasses while you are out in sun. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicines - Schwabe’s Belladonna 30 and Euphrasia 30 - both thrice daily for 4 days. Use Euphrasia Eye drops twice daily. Revert back thereafter.

Contact Lens Discomfort - What to Do

Cornea Cataract & Lasik
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
Contact Lens Discomfort - What to Do

There are many reasons why we are required to wear glasses or contact lenses including poor vision, far sightedness, inward eyelids and a variety of other conditions. These contact lenses have to cleaned, worn and stored properly so as to avoid complications in the eyes. Contact lens discomfort includes symptoms like redness, puffiness, swelling, itching, watering and burning of the eyes along with cloudy vision and pain.

If you are facing contact lens discomfort, here is what you will need to do:

  • Cleanliness: The first thing to do when you face even a slight discomfort is to check your lenses properly. You will have to ensure that you clean your contact lenses before and after use, especially if they are not the disposable kind. Yet, any discomfort can point at the fact that there may be some contaminants and infectants lurking around on the surface. Ensure that you clean the lenses again and then wear them. You must make sure that your hands are clean when you are handling them and that you are not using a lint ridden towel to dry them off as this lint can easily get onto the surface of the lenses and cause severe itching, irritation and burning.
  • Make Up: Have you used your make up before wearing your contact lenses? Then chances are that you have transferred some of that makeup onto the lenses while wearing them. This makeup can get trapped in the lenses and cause severe discomfort. So remember to apply your makeup only after you have worn your lenses, and remove the makeup only after you have removed the lenses so that you avoid any discomfort.
  • Type of Contact Lenses: Prolonged discomfort and pain may point at the fact that your contact lenses are less than ideal for you. You may want to book an appointment with your ophthalmologist in order to check the lens fit and size as well as the material of the lens, as unbeknownst to us, we may be allergic to certain material. Find out whether you need a hard or a soft material or if the soft disposable lenses have some elements that are not suiting your eyes and skin.
  • Environmental Factors: You may also want to check with your doctor about conditions like humidity and heat as well as harsh winters and rain in case your contact lenses are causing problems for you. The doctor may be able to change the contact lenses as per the weather conditions so that you are more comfortable.

Tear film stability and dryness of the eye should also be checked before wearing a certain type of contact lens. If you wish to discuss about any specific eye problem, you can consult a specilized opthamologist and ask a free question.
