You would know you normal time of periods. Bleeding can happen due to other reasons also like break of hymen if first intercourse, infection, or local trauma etc. If you are still confused why did you bleed then meet a gynaecologist for consultation. Also if unprotected sex then gynaecologist will suggest you what to take to avoid pregnancy. Do not take drugs either by yourself or hearsay. It is dangerous.

She needs to get an ultrasound first to find out cause of pain during menses. There r many causes. And treatment varies with the cause. Ask her to avoid taking so much pain killers as these r very harmful for kidneys. Better to take her to a gynaecologist. Even if the ultrasound is normal, there r many treatment options for tackling pain. Avoid pain killers.

Homeopathic Opinion: A must…

In this scientific era of health consciousness, the time has come that for the treatment of any disease, which does not respond to any particular line of treatment, one must take a homeopathic opinion immediately.

Homeopathy: Not a last Resort

To obtain the best results and full benefits of homeopathic science, one should resort to homeopathy in the early phase of sickness. Because of ignorance and lack of awareness in general public about the usefulness of homoeopathy in all kinds of diseases ranging from Cold to Cancer.

2 Ways To Manage Excessive Bleeding

DGO, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
2 Ways To Manage Excessive Bleeding

Heavy or prolonged bleeding during menses is medically known as 'menorrhagia'. It is more common as you approach menopause but can occur at any age. The bleeding has to be severe enough to interfere with your daily activities.

The cause could be hormonal, pregnancy complications, bleeding disorder or a structural lesion like a fibroid, polyp, endometriosis or adenomyosis.

In advanced age cancer of the uterus or cervix has to be ruled out.

Symptoms of heavy periods

  1. Soaking a pad or tampon every 2-3 hrs or less in a day
  2. Passage large blood clots during menstruation
  3. Your period lasts more than seven days
  4. You become anemic due to excessive blood loss

Investigations

  1. Women can be asked to complete a pictorial representation to assess the volume of blood loss.
  2. FBC is important. Every woman presenting with heavy menstrual bleeding should have FBC taken. The most common cause of iron-deficiency anaemia in women is menorrhagia.
  3. Tests for endocrine abnormalities, including TFTs should be performed only if there is clinical suspicion.
  4. Assessment of bleeding disorders is only indicated if there is clinical suspicion.
  5. Consider ultrasound scan in women who have symptoms or signs suggestive of underlying pathology.

How to manage excessive bleeding

1. Maintain a record of the no of days and pattern of heavy bleeding.

2. Increase your intake of fluids and salt

You should increase your intake of fluids and especially salty fluids during heavy menstruation. You can have vegetable juices like tomato juice as well as salty broths during such times. This will help you especially when your blood volume goes down (which is characterized by dizziness or pounding of heart) when you get up after lying down. Your body would need more than four to six cups on such a day.

3. Increase the intake of iron

Increase your iron intake through natural sources like green vegetables, egg yolks, red meat, liver and dried fruits like raisins and prunes. You can also start an iron tablet once a day for faster recovery from anemia

4. Visit your gynecologist

A good history, few blood tests, and a simple ultrasound generally leads to the diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is required to rule out cancer. Multiple new drugs have been added in the last few years which have avoided the need for surgery

An early diagnosis ends up with better results. Hence, it is important to act early

5 Simple tips to prevent backache in Pregnancy

MBBS, DGO, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MRCOG

5 Simple tips to prevent backache in Pregnancy

Backache is a very common complaint during pregnancy and a lot of pregnant women believe it is an inevitable part of being pregnant. But if we understand the reasons why it happens, then we can take remedial measures to help ourselves.

1) Majority of backache happens due to wrong posture and improved posturewill reduce the stress on your back. As the pregnancy advances, the growing baby bulk pushes the center of gravity forwards. This enhances the natural curve of the back and puts the back muscles under more stress.

One must try to walk tall and keep the stomach tucked in towards the back (as far as comfortable) while standing and walking. Always bend from your knees and not waist to pick up something from below (even your baby). Avoid sudden twisting movements from the waist, instead turn the whole body sideways to reach the object.

2) Try to improve upon the strength of the back muscles by gradually including theendurance exercises in your daily regimen. One can safely do almost all kinds of exercises till the fifth month of pregnancy but always have a word with your doctor before starting.

3) Always take your supplements (calcium, Vitamin D as prescribed by your doctor because nature tends to draw calcium from mother's bones and divert it towards the baby. So any kind of deficiency will be more harmful for the mother rather than the baby.

4 Use a medium -firm mattress and a good pillow to sleep. Very soft or very firm (Orthopedic) mattresses may not be very comfortable during pregnancy.

5) During early pregnancy one can sleep in any posture including sleeping on your tummy if this makes you more comfortable. After the 6th month of pregnancy it is better to sleep preferably on your side with a small cushion placed between your knees A gentle back massage is very soothing at times. Drink plenty of water and other liquids so you don't have urinary infections or constipation which may also sometimes cause backache.

I fell on my back while swinging chair in 2000 (+-1). I had severe pain in my back which subsided in a month. However it never went away completely. I have always remained a bit overweight. Last year I had reduced to 65 kg. I believe I did not experience much pain in that period. However I have regained weight (fat) and lately the pain increased manifolds. Could it be that the pain is because I am overweight by more than 10 kilos or should I consult a doctor. If I consult then would the doctor suggest anything other then the exercise because I know the exercises as I had used them to curb the pain during 2000 period. Thanks.

Sir meri wife 7 month 20 day ki pregnant hai aur unko leakage ho raha hai sir batay me kya karoon.

Sir meri wife 7 month 20 day ki pregnant hai aur unko leakage ho raha hai sir batay me kya karoon.
Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) is when the amniotic sac breaks before 37 weeks of gestation and labor has not started within one hour. The sac contains amniotic fluid and the developing baby. In PPROM, the amniotic fluid inside the sac leaks or gushes out of the vagina. If your waters break early the risks and treatment are dependent on the stage of pregnancy you are at. You are at risk of going into labour prematurely – the health risks for the baby of early birth are greater the younger they are. If you do not go into labour, you and the baby are at risk of infection because the normally sterile waters have been broken. The doctors have to balance these two considerations. If the waters have broken because of infection, you and the baby have a high risk of getting the infection and you may need to deliver sooner to prevent this. If the waters have broken but there is no infection currently present, you and the baby are still at risk but the immediate risk is lesser and your treatment will depend on your stage of pregnancy. If you are under 24 weeks of pregnancy and the baby is born, sadly, it is unlikely the baby will survive. If you are over 30 weeks and the baby is born, the likelihood of your baby surviving is very high - over 95%. Tests for your baby As well as carrying out various tests on you, the healthcare team will need to assess how your baby is doing. They will check his heartbeat and may also: Run a scan to check his weight Carry out electronic fetal monitoting to check his heart rate Perform a scan to check that the placenta is functioning normally. Even if it is a false alarm, the team may want to keep you in hospital to monitor you and your baby. If you are in labour and less than 35 weeks pregnant, they may try to stop the contractions, or to slow down the birth enough to give you injections of steroids to help your baby breathe when he is born. Find out more here about what happens if you are definitely in labour. If you are 35 weeks or over, the team will usually let the birth go ahead.

Important Myths And Facts About Sex During Menstruation

Important Myths And Facts About Sex During Menstruation
‘Can I have sex during my periods?’ This is a common question asked by many women out there who either feel that doing so would cause infections or diseases; or could possibly get them pregnant. Well, here are some common myths and facts about having sex during periods that you might find interesting.

1. Important Myths And Facts About Sex During Menstruation
Having Sex During Periods Can Lead To Pregnancy

Fact: Although the chances of you getting pregnant if you have sex during periods are minimal, it pays to be extra cautious and be safe every time you opt for sex, even during periods. Another thing that needs to be noted here is that sperm can survive inside the human body for a few days. And in case you have unprotected sex during periods and ovulate early, your chances of getting pregnant increase manifold.

2.Menstrual Blood Is Harmful For The Penis

Fact: A common, misplaced notion among women is that menstrual blood is dirty fluid that carries infections and other impurities. And so it could be harmful for the penis, should it come in contact with the same.

The truth is that menstrual blood is not at all considered impure and is in fact just a mixture of healthy blood and tissues that the body does not need (these line the uterus for pregnancy and are shed every month when the periods pass). So coming in contact with this blood would not harm the penis in any way.

3.Sexual Intercourse During Periods Can Harm The Uterus

Fact: Every month when your periods occur, a small opening develops in the uterus to pass menstrual blood. The common notion is that this opening is large and having sex during periods can cause the penis to poke into the hole and injure the uterus. This is not possible at all as the opening would be too small for the penis to enter. And so, there is absolutely no harm to the uterus if you have sex during your menstrual cycles.

4.Sex During Periods Can Cause Aids And Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Fact: There is no way you can contract AIDs via sex unless one of the partners is HIV infected. If you have unprotected sex with an individual who is HIV positive, chances are you will get infected as well, be it during your menstrual cycles or after.

The same goes for Sexually Transmitted Diseases. As mentioned earlier, menstrual blood is nothing but a mixture of normal blood and tissues that line the uterus. And so it would not contain any infections, impurities or agents that can cause STDs.

However, if you or your partner already has STD then the chances of the infection spreading would be greater. So make it a point to use a condom during sex, even during periods.

5. Sex During Periods Can Offer Relief From Menstrual Cramps And Excessive Bleeding

Fact: To an extent this is correct. Sex during periods can relieve women of menstrual cramps owing to the fact that orgasms can stimulate the release of certain chemicals in the body which can reduce pain. Again, sex during menstruation can reduce pain by using up the chemicals called prostaglandins which are responsible for menstrual cramps.

Having sex during periods can also stop excessive menstrual bleeding (in terms of the number of days). This does not necessarily mean that the blood stays inside the body. Rather, sexual intercourse would cause the uterus to contract and expand faster, thereby propelling the fluid and tissue out of the body faster. Therefore, there are strong chances for your periods to stop earlier than expected although you can expect heave flow during the initial days.
