I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend and given Her emergency contraceptive pill. She had very light bleeding after 5 days of taking ECP. It is already been 6 days late of her regular period cycle which is 28 days but she didn't get her periods. I read that this bleeding is due to emergency contraceptive pill. May 13 was her first day of cycle as we had intercourse on 19th may. Is there any chance of pregnancy? By how many days periods get delay after taking emergency contraceptive pill? Please advise.

Hi, i-pill is an emergency pill (as the name suggests) which is supposed to be taken only in case of emergency or once a while because after all it contains hormone levonorgestrel which can delay the menses. I-pill can work in any of the two different ways depending on where you may be in your menstrual cycle. It may stop an egg being released from the ovary. If an egg has been released, i-pill may prevent the sperm from fertilizing it. It is not always 100% effective, so if period delayed by one week then do pregnancy test. If kept taking regularly can affect menstrual cycle, also it can lead to ectopic pregnancy, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, breast pain or tenderness.

As long as you are having regular periods there is nothing to worry. If you are overweight exercise may help. I would also advise you to get a complete blood count and hb done.

Sometimes conception occurs late in case of irregular cycles. Get repeat scan done after 10 days. Don't be anxious. If tsh is normal, no need to worry.

Migraine Vs. Headache: Know the Difference

Migraine Vs. Headache: Know the Difference

Migraine vs. Headache: know the difference

How to differentiate between a migraine and headache?

When you feel pain or pressure in your head, it may become difficult for you to assess whether you are experiencing a common headache or a migraine. Let's understand how different they are from each other.

A typical headache usually affects both sides of your head and varies from a mild to moderate pain. It can last from 30 minutes to up to a period of one week.

Some specific areas which get affected by a headache are:

  •   Temples
  •   Forehead
  •   Back of your neck

Factors that trigger this headache type are a muscle strain, stress or anxiety.

A migraine, on the other hand, is also a type of a headache which results in an acute throbbing sensation in one part of your head. Usually, migraine headaches are highly painful. Migraine pain makes it difficult for a person to carry out his/her daily tasks. Symptoms or signs associated with migraine attacks are:

  •   Vomiting
  •   Nausea
  •   Sensitivity to sound or light
  •   Pain in the temples
  •   Temporary loss of vision
  •   Pain behind your ear or eye

What are the common causes of a migraine?

  •   Hormonal imbalances in women - fluctuations in oestrogen, especially during menopause or pregnancy seem to trigger a migraine
  •   Drinks like wine and extremely caffeinated beverages
  •   Foods such as salty foods, aged cheese as well as processed foods can trigger the migraine attack.
  •   Medications - vasodilators such as nitroglycerine and oral contraceptives can intensify migraine pain.

How to treat a headache?

Fortunately, you can get rid of stress-induced headaches through over-the-counter treatments, which include:

  •   Aspirin
  •   Acetaminophen
  •   Ibuprofen

How to treat a migraine?

If you experience migraine attacks less frequently, these medicines may give you quick relief:

  •   Triptans, such as rizatriptan (Maxalt) or almotriptan (Axert)
  •   Antinausea medicines, such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), promethazine (Phenergan) or prochlorperazine (Compazine)
  •   Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as acetaminophen, naproxen sodium, aspirin or ibuprofen

Some preventive tips:

  •   Make changes in your diet such as avoid such foods, including caffeine and alcohol which are believed to trigger headaches.
  •   You can also try muscle relaxation exercises, yoga or meditation to ease the migraine attack.

Lybrate-user, before getting pregnant earlier were you asked to get thyroid test and blood glucose (ogtt) test done? these are mandatory now. Because quite a few women are developing hypothyroidism, which does affect conception, if conceived then fetal development and if not in control then pregnancy outcome can be bad, as experienced by you. Similarly gestational diabetes (diabetes developing during pregnancy) is seen in about 20% females. Now if you want to have a baby, please get both the tests done. Since you are already on thyroxine treatment, the test is needed to see what is the tsh level. It is recommended that even before conceiving tsh should be maintained around 2 mu/l and during pregnancy - 1st trimester 0.1 to 2 mu/l, 2nd trimester 0.3 to 3 mu/l & 3rd trimester 0.3 to 3.1 mu/l. If these levels are not achieved, then as mentioned earlier there can be problems with conception and fetal development. Similarly gestational diabetes is also a problematic condition. So get that test too done. Once your tsh is maintained as mentioned, then there will be no problem if you have any doubt, please do come back. Thanks.

Wait for another week, repeat pregnancy test, if negative, consider urself non pregnant, then you may either wait for spontaneous onset of menses or take pills for withdrawal bleeding.

Is there any problem if I am doing unprotected sex with a girl after 15 days of her periods.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology

Yes she is likely to get pregnant if you have sex after 15 days of menses. It is the unsafe period. But you can give her i-pill within 5 days, sooner the better, immediately after sex is best to prevent pregnancy.

Menses can be missed either because of hormonal changes or even stress or even if you have put on some weight in recent times then also menses can be missed. All these problems are temporary and menses will come on its own. You can wait for another 15 days before you can take tablet deviry to get menses. In the meantime, keep repeating urine pregnancy test every week till you get your menses.

Hello doctors, In order to maximize our chances to conceive, we had intercourse daily from 10th to 18th day. 15th Jul was 18th day. When can we test the pregnancy whether conceived or not? Which is the most recommended way to test the pregnancy? Lastly, if periods do occur this month end as per cycle, is there a possibility that fertilization is done but periods occurred early / on time?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Kolkata
Hello doctors,

15th Jul...
If her periods are delayed by more than 5 days, you can do the pregnancy test at home early morng on the 6th/7th day before going to the toilet. If negative, still periods not come, you can repeat the test after another 5 days. Several kits are available with chemist shop. Pregcolor is ok. If periods come in spite of fertilisation, it is due to failure of implantation. Usually as the embryo is implanting in the uterus around 25th day of the cycle she may experience slight cramps and some spots of blood. If the process is successful this problem vanishes in 3 days and the next period dies not come on the expected date. If it fails to implant, then the spots may advance to heavier bleeding like a period. So it is very difficult to identify whether it was a non pregnant menstrual bleed or implantation failure.
