Hello, I want to know everything about thyroid. How long one have to take medicine for thyroid? What are the effects of it if you stop taking medicine after some time?

Hello, if you are talking about hypothyroidism, then the treatment with thyroxine which is hormone replacement therapy, hence has to be continued for whole life. Our thyroid gland produces t4 and t3 (t4 is thyroxine, t3 is triiodothyronine). Iodine required for synthesis of thyroxine. Iodine deficiency can lead to hypothyroidism and goitre. Hypothyroidism causes weight gain, slow heart rate, joint pains, swelling of face and lower limbs, dry skin, dry hair and hair fall, irregular menstruation, excess flow, speech difficulty, inability to concentrate, early tiredness and intolerance to cold. Hypothyroidism is diagnosed on the basis of tsh levels. Also another condition known as hashimoto's thyroiditis also causes hypothyroidism. In both these conditions treatment is taking thyroxine tablets for lifetime. Dose depends upon tsh levels and body weight.

Adhere strictly to a diabetic diet after consulting Dietician. She should avoid sweets, high calorie and carbohydrate rich diet like rice, sugar, potato, bread, bakery items,Maida and fruits like grape, mango, banana, cheeky,Jack fruits etc.Along with diet control she has to go for regular walk and reduce weight if overweight.she should monitor her blood sugar three monthly and if it is not controlled with diet restriction, she has to take medicine after consulting Diabetologist.Consult for further advice

lybrate-user, TSH 7.38 mU/L, is above the normal limit, it is in the sub-clinical hypothyroidism. Unless there are any specific symptoms related to it, there is no need to take any treatment. Your blood report is fine, sometimes higher values of Hb are seen. Your Lymphcyte count is much higher than normal (25 to 30%) Thanks.

You can continue it and try to control your diet strictly as advised by your Physician, exercising regularly, reducing weight if overweight and maintaining ideal weight. If not controlled with these measures then increasing medicines with advice of your Physician.
