My grandson is 20 month as of now he is not speaking nor responding doctors are predicting Autism can you suggest what to do.

M.Sc Applied Psychology, Advanced Diploma Child Guidance & Counselling
Psychologist, Delhi
Dear Lybrate user Please give proper stimulation and time to the child to grow and develop. It's too early to label a child as having autism. First get your grandson hearing test done, because if hearing is not appropriate then it could lead to language delay. Another thing is you can try giving him language exposure like labelling the door as door with the words marked over it. Recite rhymes to him, tell him bed time stories to him. Have patience, all the best.

Actually I have problem with my voice. I can not speck louder in some circumstances. And I am not okay with my voice.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.

Sir I am suffer from stammering. My confidence level is very low when I stutter. Is there any remedy for it. Pliz suggest me.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

I have stammering problem only when I give some seminar or orientation. So can I take propranolol? If so when or any other solution? Plzz help.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Stammering can be made lesser only and only by Speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, I'd suggest you to visit a Psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it. Hope your query is answered. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts. Wishing you good health.

Stuttering - Health Tip

Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)
Speech Therapist, Chennai
Stuttering is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or last longer than normal. These problems cause a break in the flow of speech (called disfluency).
Symptoms of stuttering may include:
Feeling frustrated when trying to communicate
Putting in (interjecting) extra sounds or words (" we went to the. Uh. Store")
Repeating sounds, words, parts of words, or phrases (" I want. I want my doll" i. I see you" or" ca-ca-ca-can")
Tension in the voice
Very long sounds within words (" I am booooobbbby jones" or" llllllllike")
Signs and tests:
No testing is usually necessary. The diagnosis of stuttering may require consultation with a speech pathologist.
Treatment:
There is no one best treatment for stuttering. Most early cases are short-term and resolve on their own. Speech therapy may be helpful if:
Stuttering has lasted more than 3 - 6 months, or the" blocked" speech lasts several seconds. The child appears to be struggling when stuttering, or is embarrassed. There is a family history of stuttering. Speech therapy can help make the speech more fluent or smooth, and can help the child feel better about the stuttering.

Dear lybrate user. I am sure that you consulted your child specialist about this. What was his advise. Delay in speech is normal upto an age of 2 and half years. Even though there is speech delay, 2 year old child should speak some words, for sure. I suggest you to have a detailed discussion with your child specialist. Take care.

First you meet a speech therapist. I don't see the need for ent unless you have any related ear, nose, tongue etc problem.
