I have a problem regarding speech. I can not pronounce the letter 's' clearly. While speaking it sounds like f. For instance if I am saying some it sounds like 'fun' Please help me with this. One more thing I would like to inform you about is that I had a habit of sucking thumb till 6-7 years of age. Could the problem occur due to this habit?

You have to know proper place and manner of Sa sound. Then in which are all d position you are having this problem. For example initial medial or final (Sat or mouSe or drawS).In therapy we 'll help you to know the proper place and manner. Then set of words which starts with s in 1st, middle and last position. It ll help you make S to pronounce. Same for all consonants.

Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

Stammering generally develops in the course of growing up. And is linked somewhat to your self confidence. Try speaking by looking into the mirror. Speak slowly. Create a script before speaking. Exercise deep breathing and say encouraging words to yourself - i'm good, I have qualities. I'm good at doing this believe in yourself.

Speech & Language Delay - Spot The Signs!

There are instances when a kid doesn’t show the usual signs of development compared to their peers. Most parents take it casually thinking that their child will catch up in due course only to find a larger problem associated with it. It is therefore extremely important to discuss speech and language related delays with a medical practitioner to find out whether a child is immature or has a genuine problem which requires medical help. A child can show different signs as per age:

Different age group:

  • Within the first 12 months, a baby should be able to relate to his environment and make babbling and cooing sound. It is often observed that by month 9, a baby is capable of stringing sounds after seeing things. If a baby is intently watching objects, but is unable to make any sound, this may be an early symptom of speech or language related problem.
  • Between the 12th and the 15th month, a baby should be capable of making a wide array of sounds including few commonly used words. Babies should also be able to take few basic instructions and oblige those.
  • Between the age of 18th and 24th months, a baby becomes smart enough to pronounce anywhere in the range of 20 to 50 words. They also start combining words and make simple sentences. They should be capable of identifying common objects and remember their names.
  • By the age of 3, a toddler should be smart enough to combine 4-5 words and form sentences. Kids of this age also become smart enough to take straightforward instructions and perform them comfortably. Any deviation on this should be immediately reported to the Doctor.

What are the warning signs?
If a child between the age of 1-2 is not able to do the following things:

  1. Fails to use gesture
  2. Use more gesture than vocalising by the age of 18 months
  3. Produce no voice by 18th-month
  4. Fails to perform simple instructions

A child between the age of 2-3 needs evaluation if:

  1. Capable of imitating words but isn’t spontaneous in vocalising
  2. Repeats certain words multiple times
  3. The tone of voice is unusual compared to his peers

Possible causes of speech and language delay:

  1. Problems with palate leading to oral impairments
  2. Short frenulum restricting sufficient tongue movement to produce speech
  3. Oral-motor problems leading to speech limitation
  4. Problems related to hearing
  5. Chronic infection of the ear leading to speech delay

What does the pathologist assess?

  1. What can the child speak?
  2. What can the child understand?
  3. Oral-motor status
  4. Clarity of speech

Post the above evaluation a pathologist directs a plan of action. Sometimes speech therapy sessions are recommended in order to improve kids’ skill. For a motor related problem, a doctor can state a plan of action and limit the expectation of parents. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Speech Therapist.

Dear Pranshul, Stammering is "speaking with sudden involuntary pauses and a tendency to repeat the initial letters of words" or "say something with difficulty, repeating the initial letters of words and with sudden involuntary pauses". Stammering could be due to two reasons. One. Vocal chord misalignment. Two. Psychological performance anxiety. First of all you should consult an ENT Specialist and evaluate your vocal chords. If there is problem, ENT specialist will be able to correct it. If there is no problem with your vocal chords, You should consult a psychologist for stammer therapy. Take care.

My grand mother all sudden lost the clarity in her speech. She is not able to talk clearly life before, we got it checked from physician he said everything is okay, neurologist gave medicine and we get MRI done, report find some clot. Any one who is familiar with such cases please suggest the duration of treatment.

Hi lybrate-user. Most of the time (for all age groups), whether the brain clot is surgically treated or not, the speech problem still remains. It’s the fact. Please go ahead and fix the clot. But don’t expect her speech to be fixed just by fixing her clot. Clot fixing and Speech recovery are 2 different things. Just because her speech was impaired because of the clot, doesn’t mean her speech will be alright after fixing the clot. But still you need to make sure that she can communicate with words or any other way possible. If she is still trying and struggling to speak, please consult a Speech Therapist asap. We can help her fix her speech problem through speech therapy by recovering it back. It takes a particular period of time and can also help you as a family to plan ahead on how to engage her in conversations with people instead of she not communicating anything. It is her right to communicate and she can. For more info, contact please.
