Difference Between Lens And Specs!

Eyeglasses and contact lenses are both used for vision correction. Both of the options have their advantages and disadvantages but a number of factors like lifestyle, comfort and age etc. are important while deciding which one to choose.

Here is a list of the fundamental differences between using spectacles and using contact lenses:

  1. Distance from the cornea: Lenses are worn directly on the eye and are in constant physical contact with the cornea while glasses are worn over the eyes. Contact lenses may cause infections in the eye because the user has to touch the eye in order to wear them and to take them off.
  2. Difference in vision: Since the lenses of spectacles are a little distance away from the eye, vision can be slightly distorted but contact lenses can provide natural and accurate vision. Also, side vision is not improved by glasses as you have to turn your head to see what is beside you. The contacts move around with your eyeballs and the peripheral vision is in focus.
  3. Ease of use: Some people find eyeglasses difficult to use because of the constant weight on the face and the obstruction caused by the frames of the glasses. There may also be a constant need to adjust the frames. Often eyeglasses slip down the nose when you sweat or engage in rigorous physical activity. Contact lenses are free from all these hassles - they are not distracting or obstructive and so they are extensively used by dancers and athletes. Spectacles is very uncomfortable to wear during the rains or in humid weather because they fog up.
  4. Infections and complications: Contact lenses can get displaced inside the eye and they can be difficult to reposition. They also cause the eyes to itch and water if you wear them for a very long time at a stretch or if tiny dust particles enter your eyes. The use of eyeglasses is far more flexible in this respect - they can be removed in case your eye itches or burns, but regular use of glasses causes dark circles and bags under the eyes.
  5. Aesthetic differences: People often prefer contact lenses as they do not change the physical appearance - they help you look natural and you can also use colored lenses to change the color of your eyes. Glasses may look slightly unnatural but some people also prefer them for the fashion quotient.

Hello. There is no medication or food for improving eye sight or to get rid of glasses. Get your vision tested and wear glasses. If not interested in glasses then you can try contact lens or lasik laser. As your age is now 30 years so your number will not increase now whether you wear glasses or not as number becomes stable at age of 18-20 yrs. Having said that I advise you to eat balanced diet including green vegetables and seasonal fruits for keeping eyes and body healthy.

Lasik is a simple laser procedure which changes the shape of the cornea so that the light rays fall on the retina properly. It is a painless procedure. It is a day care procedure does not require any injections, does not require admission, you can simply resume your duties in 2 days. Cost varies from centre to centre. Side effects are usually limited to dryness of eyes for few months. We can do lasik anytime after age of 18 years. You need to undergo proper prelasik checkup to decide whether lasik is safe for you or not.

But since yesterday I am having little pain at the corners of my eye and I am able to see far objects with little blurred and not clear enough. So please tell me whether a myopia can be developed after 2 months of full examination of eye or it is just because of summer and lack of water in my body?

It is due to dryness causing blurring of vision due to addiction to smartphone , laptop or watching TV for long time without break. Dryness is not a disease which you can cure by putting lubricating eye drops for few days, while working on smartphone , computer & watching TV for long time without giving importance to the health of eyes. Number of blinking drastically goes down from around 24 per minute to around 8 per minute while working on computer etc causing severe dryness, blurring of vision, headache & increased blinking to compensate dryness .One who works on smartphone etc will have to change &will have to learn how to work on computer for long time without giving any trouble to eyes .One should look away from computer after every 10 minute & should take rest for 10 minutes after every two hours .Every body knows that to become man from monkey took millions of years according to Darwin theory & how you expect that our eyes will adjust to computer in 20 yrs, nature takes its own time, computer development is just 20 yrs history, so you will have to take the help of lubricating eye drops to neutralise the effect of computer etc, you may use Refresh liquigel eye drops 5-6 times daily.

Hi, Of Course you have other options. An ICL (implantable contact lens) is among the best alternative for those who are not suitable for LASIK/Lasers. The results are unbelievably outstanding. ICL is reversible, unlike Laser/LASIK which is not reversible. But cost of ICL is higher andrisk of complications is slightly more than with /Laser.

Headache after trauma is normal but An ongoing headache if it is getting worsened after headinjury may be caused by subdural hematoma. Is the laser surgery of eyes safe? Or is there any risk of loss of vision or complete blindness?

Is the laser surgery of eyes safe? Or is there any risk of loss of vision or complete blindness?
Hello lybrate-user. Operations done to remove the refractive error (power) of the eyes are known as refractive surgery (laser surgery or lasik). There are certain basic criteria that most patients need to fulfill before they can safely undergo refractive surgery. To enumerate, they are: (1) stability of refraction: the power of the eyes should have become stable for a period of 1.5 years minimum without any change. (2) curvature of the cornea should be tested by a technique which is known as topography. (3) thickness of the cornea should be measured by a test known as pachymetry. The minimum thickness required is 550 microns. (4) dilated retina evaluation: this is one of the most important tests that should be performed by a trained retina specialist. This test helps in detection of any offensive lesion on the central or peripheral retina. In case of any retinal abnormality, these should be treated before undergoing the surgery for number reduction. (5) there should be no pre-existent corneal abnormality. (example: corneal scar, opacity, defect, etc.) another important suggestion is that whenever you go for the assessment (the above mentioned tests), you should discontinue the use of contact lenses at least 4 weeks prior to the assessment. The reason for this being that use of contact lens temporarily alters the contour of the cornea. It takes around 3-4 weeks for the restoration of the original corneal contour after removal of the contact lens. Thus, if assessment is done properly, there is no risk of vision loss or complete blindness. Another important point is that you, as a patient, should be compliant to put post operative medication in your eyes for at least 2 months. There is bound to be some discomfort, watering, foreign body sensation, pain after the surgery in most cases-you should be ready to tolerate that. A leave from work for 7-10 days after the surgery should be generally sufficient. Last but not the least, you should set realistic expectations from this surgery. Though extremely rare, there is a remote possibility that the surgery may need to be repeated. Also, the need for subsequent treatment for the eye may be required. Thus, you should be compliant enough to trust and follow your eye specialist.

Hello I was diagnosed with corneal scar due to conjunctivitis. I was on prednisolone drops in stage by stage process. Visited doctor he told right eye has reduced but left eye still has some scars. Hence he gave tacrolimus ointment to be applied night. I applied night and morning my eyes were like burning and irritation. Is it common or should I stop using them. Please suggest.

Hello I was diagnosed with corneal scar due to conjunctivitis. I was on prednisolone drops in stage by stage process....
Hello lybrate-user. From the symptoms described by you, it seems that you have been suffering from viral keratoconjunctivitis. It is a viral infection of the eye and tends to take long periods of time to resolve. By long periods, I mean that it may take months (upto 6 months) to completely heal. If you have been prescribed tacrolimus and its causing a lot of burning with irritation, it might be a good idea to use a lubricant eye drop copiously. Tacrolimus is known to cause burning, irritation and pricking. You could use a lubricant eye drop 8-10 times in a day. It would help in easing your discomfort. I would suggest not to stop the tacrolimus therapy without the consent of your cornea specialist. Hope my suggestions helped you.
