My friend has lump in her breast. What should she do? And also advise what is the way to get out from this problem besides any surgeries.

MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Kanpur
Most probably its a benign lump if her age is less than 30 years. But she should get examined by a surgeon to confirm it. Also the only cure for lump is surgery. But indication for surgery depends upon its size and symptoms caused by it.

My relative was highly indulged in chewing tobacco and liquor consumption. Now he is diagnosed with lungs cancer fourth stage. Post biopsy his condition is getting even critical. He is not able to breathe without oxygen mask. Doctors say this is because of biopsy post effects. Please advice how long can he survive. Doctors say he is not strong enough to bear chemotherapy. Is he very critical.

MD - Pulmonary Medicine, MBBS
Pulmonologist, Gurgaon
Usually lung cancer fourth stage is very critical and such patients have a very poor survival rate. But still you need to tell me about the type of lung cancer, prognosis depends on that. We might suggest him a low dose chemo. But in all conditions his outcome won't be very great.

What is cancer? Is there any medicines for this disease? Is there any prevention methods. If yes please tell me doctor. Thank you in advance.:)

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Cancer is caused by abnormal uncontrolled proliferation of cells, usually caused by some faulty signals in the body which lose check over few cells and they become autonomous. It can be lifestyle related like lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, fatty food, hormonal imbalance, viruses, pollution, smoking, tobacco, or may be genetic. One must be careful about what we eat and what kind of environmental factors effect us in our surrounding and avoid known carcinogens. Regular screening and health check up to rule out any early disease prior to producing symptoms. Turmeric, tulsi leaves, wheat grass etc have anticancer properties.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. First and foremost, I would advise you to keep your diet & lifestyle streamlined and stay relaxed/ stress-free. Also, you seem to be overweight as on today. A Mediterranean diet & an active lifestyle that includes 45 minutes of walk daily for at least 5 days a week can help you reduce. Given your age, you can go for mammogram on a yearly basis henceforth. Additionally, suggest meet up a genetic counselor too who can assess the risk of breast/ other cancers, if any, and suggest prophylactic measures as contextually appropriate in your case. Hope this helps. Do take care, and all the very best. Sincerely,

Cervical Cancer

MBBS, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Noida
Play video

Hello, everyone. I am Dr Komal, obstetrics and gynaecologist. I am presently working at JP Hospital, Noida. Today I will discuss with you about Cervical Cancer with my main focus on vaccine available for it.

As most of us are aware that it is the cancer of mouth of the Uterus. It is a most common cancer among females in our country. It affects approximately 1,22,000 females per year in our country and it is a leading cause of death due to cancer in our country. The most common age group affected is 55-59 years of age. But the recent trend is showing the difference towards the age group as well.

Pap smear is a screening procedure and it is offered to all the females from 25 years of the age group and it should be carried out after every 3 years till the 49 years of age. And after this, continue this after every 5 years till you come under 65-69 years of age.

What is the cause of cervical cancer?

You must be surprised to know that in 99% of the cases, human papillomavirus, a viral agent is the infected agent of this cancer. Only 1% of the cause is due to some other things. So, it is a viral infection that causes cancer.

As it is a viral infection, we have the vaccination in our country to fight against the cause of this disease. And the most common vaccine used is Gardasil. World Health Organisation recommends that the vaccine should be referred to all girls between the age of 9-13 years because of its high immunogenicity of this age group. THis vaccination can also be available to all the females till 45 years of age.

The only issue is that once you become sexually active, then the immunogenicity decreases. However, you must be offered and you should go ahead to take the vaccine.

Two is the second dose and that you receive after 2 months of the first dose. And six is the second dose which you receive after 6 months of the first dose.

What is the cost of the vaccine?

It costs about 2800-3000 per dose. There is no severe side effects and the most common being the injection related things.

What is the contra- indication?

There is no contra- indication. But the one important thing is that pregnant women are not recommended to take this. Once you become pregnant while taking this vaccine then you should definitely dose for the next time.

So, this vaccine is available to prevent cervical cancer in the body even in a very minute form.

Hope this video is helpful for you to get aware of cervical cancer which is killing women every day in our country.

Thank you so much.

Symptoms Of Bladder Cancer And Its Treatment!

Bladder cancer is characterized by irregular growth of abnormal tissue (tumor) on the lining of the bladder. This type of cancer may spread to the surrounding tissues or other body parts as well.

What are the causes?

Bladder cancer can be caused by environment-related factors and smoking. In fact, smoking tobacco is one of the major causes of bladder cancer around the world. The chemicals present in tobacco can irritate the bladder lining which ultimately leads to bladder cancer. It may also be caused by continuous exposure to chemicals such as dyes or leather dust and radiation. These chemicals tend to cause unusual changes in the cells of the bladder lining and causes cancer in the bladder.

It can also be caused by modifications in the dna in the cells of the bladder which may impair the functioning of the cells in the body. This can cause mutations in the bladder resulting in cancer.

What are the symptoms?

1. Presence of blood in the urine, often painless

2. Feeling of pain while passing urine

3. Back pain

4. Excessive urination

5. Infections in the urinary tract

6. Lower leg swelling

7. Pain in the bones, especially in the pelvic area

8. Weight loss

Treatment options

Treatments for bladder cancer depend on the stage of the cancer. The various treatment choices are:

Surgery - In some cases, these cancers are surgically removed by a surgeon. A type of surgery used is transurethral resection of bladder tumor (turbt) where the cancer cells are destroyed with laser by passing a thin fiber into the bladder.

Chemotherapy - In this method, medications are used to target and destroy cancer cells.

Radiation therapy - Radiation therapy uses rays such as x-ray or uv rays to destroy cancer cells in the body

Immunotherapy - This treatment boosts the immune system of the body so that it attacks the cancerous cells in the bladder. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Urologist.

It is normal for a man not to be able to achieve erection on some occasions, but if it is regular then it needs attention. Psychological reasons includes chemistry with your sexual partner, any guilt, fear of intimacy negative feelings depressions can affect the erection.
