I want to know is there any type of test to check whether a person is or not suffering from any type of cancer. Just a random check.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Sir, since cancer cells grow from the normal cells, symptoms are also very subtle and one has to be really watchful to see any thing persisting beyond the routine period. Cancer preventive clinics are there and they routinely screen for most of the cancers. But so far there is no one particular approved test to say if malignant cells are present. Many labs have introduced some blood investigations to diagnose malignant cells in body but due to lack of specific information they are not approved for routine screening.

Cancer Symptoms Men Ignore

1. Problems When You Pee
Many men have some problems peeing as they get older, like:
A need to pee more often, especially at night
Dribbling, leaking, or an urgent need to go
Trouble starting to pee, or a weak stream
An enlarged prostate gland usually causes these symptoms, but so can prostate cancer. See your doctor to check on the cause of the problem. He?ll give you an exam to look for an enlarged prostate, and he may talk to you about a blood test (called a PSA test) for prostate cancer.

2. Changes in Your Testicles
"If you notice a lump, heaviness, or any other change in your testicle, never delay having it looked at.
"Unlike prostate cancer, which grows slowly, testicular cancer can take off overnight" Your doctor will look for any problems with a physical exam, blood tests, and an ultrasound of your scrotum.

3. Blood in Your Pee or Stool
These can be among the first signs of cancer of the bladder, kidneys, or colon. It's a good idea to see your doctor for any bleeding that?s not normal, even if you don't have other symptoms,
Although you're more likely to have a problem that's not cancer, like haemorrhoids or a urinary infection, it's important to find and treat the cause.

4) Breast Changes
"Men tend to ignore breast lumps because breast cancer isn't on their radar"
"But 1% of all breast cancers occur in men, although they're usually diagnosed much later" Don?t take any chances. If you find a lump, tell your doctor and have it checked.

It is not necessarily cancer - you should do an Endoscopy to understand if there is any problem in the stomach. For further queries get back to me.

My grandmother has breast cancer. The biopsy result is'Invasive duct carcinoma grade 2' And her PET-CT scan result is'Hypermetabolic retroareolar right breast mass FDG avid regional lymph nodes. No FDG avid distant lesions. Her-2 result is negative. ER and PgR result is positive 90%? Strong. Doctor told that tumor is locally advanced. We have started her treatment and doctor suggested below plan - 1- 11 chemotherapy once in a week 5 chemo are already done. Doctor told that if she can't tolerate chemo then we can stop before 11. The reason doctor gave behind chemo treatment is to shrink a tumor and tumor is stick to skin so chemo will make it loose. 2- Surgery 3- 5 chemotherapy every 21 days of interval 4- Radiation 5- Hormonal treatment for 5 years My grandma is physically fit and she doesn't have BP and diabetics and any other health issues except acidity. Last week my grandma fell down and her x-ray report is'Diffuse osteopenia. Anterior wedging of L1, L2 & L3 vertebra, could represent osteoporosis collapse. She has severe pain in the back. Recently I have taken a 2nd opinion and the doctor suggested that she doesn't need chemotherapy as her ER test is positive. She told that only hormones tablet will help to shrink a tumor and she may not need surgery. She told if we give chemo to her at the age of 75, it may create health problems for her later. I'm in dilemma now. Shall we continue with chemo treatment or switch to hormone treatment? If yes then what about its side effects? If we switch to hormone treatment then the chemo which is given will create any problem? Will it be right to switch to hormone treatment after 5 chemo cycle? What are the chances of metastasis in hormone treatment? What if we have to switch to chemo again after hormone treatment? Will cancer cell become drug resistant because of first chemotherapy? Chemo drugs go in an entire body so if there are any cancer cells in initial stage then it will kill it so chances of metastasis will be less. Is it true? Does hormone treatment also help to prevent metastasis? Let me know if you need more details.

Above the age of 65 ,role of chemotherapy is very limited. Hormone receptor positive disease respond well to hormonal treatment, including shrinkage of tumour. In advanced age, and advanced tumour, first goal is surgery, if at all it's possible, followed by Radiotherapy (if required) and hormonal treatment. I need to see PET CT report Histopatho and ER PR Her 2 report. Please send me for further review.

Prostrate ,PSA values, fora male 66 I the range of 7.3 comes down(no adverse biopsy). To 5.5 in2 months as per top Urologist advice. Can it come down again ?

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS - Urology, MBBS
Urologist, Ahmedabad
Dear , Yes, PSA can come down. When this test was introduced it was mainly for the screening of prostatic cancer but it rises in many other conditions as well. If the test is none within 48 hours of per rectal examination or any periurethral procedure like catheterisation, dilatation or cystourethroscopy. Besides it rises in prostatitis. It needs long term antibiotic kike 4-6 weeks and then gradually comes down.4-14 is normal range for benign prostatic enlargement. So you need not worry if it reamins at this level. Dr. Kiran Mehta.

Dear sir, cancer itself or treatment both may cause loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or mucositis or ulceration in mouth and GIT. You must give adequate antiemetics and antacids, appetiser and small frequent meals, mostly light and nutritious. You can give oats, whole grain, buttermilk, juices, porridge, biscuits etc.

Hi dear fruits are good in cancer. Symptoms;--generally pain is main symptom but mainly depend upon the organs involved. Other symptoms can be -bleeding, obstruction, ulceration, fever, weakness, loss of appetite, indigestion etc. Etc. Early detection;;- is generally difficult. But lumps may be detected, palpable. Suddenly found when ever pain or some problem is there.

How cancer occurs and how can we know that. What are the tips to identify and how we can cure that. Is there any cure for cancer?

Fellow Breast Surgery (MUHS), DNB (General Surgery), MBBS
Oncologist, Aurangabad
Cancer is a manufacturing defect when new cells are being formed. But this defect has a unique capacity to defy the body's immunity and multiply uncontrollably. When our body's systems are constantly renewing themselves after wear and tear by creating new cells, sometimes somethings go wrong and a defective cell is formed. Body's immunity identifies a bad cell and removes it. But when this step is skipped they keep on growing first locally in some organ and then by spreading through either lymph channels or blood stream. Based on whether the cells are growing at one place or have spread to other places the symptoms change. Locally it is either due to any lump / swelling of crores of cancer cells or due to intereference of these cells in the organ's function. For example cancer in liver cannot be easily felt from above as swelling, but it can cause symptoms like indigestion or jaundice due to interference in liver's function of helping digestion. A breast cancer on the other hand usually presents as a lump in breast or axilla. The best way a person can do, is to identify and respect all the symptoms they have, which persist or are unusual. Some good habits like breast self examination are useful in identifying a symptomless early stage cancer. Cure is a word which is used with a very high caution. Cancer is defined by two most important characteristics - metastasis i. E. Spreading to other places different than site/organ of origin, and recurrence. Few cancer cells usually remain dormant after completion of initial treatment and then re grow after some time. There are many reason and factors helping it or acting against it. So cure is a word usually not used in cancer. And that's why patients are kept on strict surveillance after treatment for 5-10 years. Experts in medical fraternity believe that a patient surviving for more than 5 years may be called cured. But there are many patients who recur with same disease even after 5 years, 10 years even more than that. The goal of treatment of cancer is to improve survival and give best quality of life possible to each patient. In medicine always is always wrong and never is never right.

Dear, enlarged prostate causes the bladder muscles to work harder to push urine out. Over a long period of time, this leads to thickened bladder wall and overactivity of bladder muscle. Once overactive bladder develops, it can act spontaneously without our voluntary control. This is the common reason for not able to control urine in prostate enlargement. Other reasons are bladder stone or infection. Please get an ultrasound abdomen with post-void residual urine. Based on prostate size, bladder wall, residual urine, serum psa and urine routine examination findings, a urologist will be able to treat you better. If you do not have much residual urine, infection or stone, then you can be started on drugs to relax bladder (anti-cholinergics). This will help you with improving the control of urination.
