I have a pain feeling in my right breast recently. I found a lump inside. What should I do?

Dear mam, pain in breast at your age is usually due to hormonal changes and are mostly self limiting. You can take pain killers as and when required, use sports bra and proper breast support. You can also take vitamin e supplement to reduce inflammation and pain. As far as lump is concerned you should get an ultrasound done for breast and if suspicious then fnac from lump. Usually at your age it should be fibroadenoma but still one should be cautious. If fibroadenoma then you should simply observe it by getting periodical ultrasound done to monitor it's size.

The pain may be due to inflammation of the lymph nodes. In case you are having associated fever, do try to get a ENT check up for possibility of Acute Tonsillitis. If there is obvious swelling in the area you mention consider getting a opinion from a surgeon if biopsy is indicated. Let me know if you need more details.

Helath Tips on Cancer Prevention:

Cancer prevention are the ‘actions’ taken to lower or limit the possibilities of getting cancer.

Many things in our lifestyle, genes and environment around us affect our risk of getting cancer.

Researchers are studying different ways to prevent cancer, which include the following:

Ways to avoid things/factors known to cause cancer
Changes in lifestyle and diet
Detecting precancerous conditions early
Medicines to treat a precancerous condition or to keep cancer from occurring
Keep Away from Carcinogens
Any substance or agent known to increase the probability of getting cancer is called a carcinogen. Some known and established carcinogens can be
Cigarette smoking or tobacco use in any form
Infections - Human papilloma virus, Hepatitis B & C viruses, Human T-cell leukaemia virus, Epstein-Barr virus, Kaposi sarcoma virus etc
Radiation - UV rays of sun, radon gas and man-made radiation such as X-rays
Immunosuppressive medicines
Car exhaust fumes
Asbestos, some chemicals found in paints

Modify Lifestyle

Ways of living and habits which may affect the risk incidence of cancer could be
Diet - Red and processed meat, food additives, salty & pickled foods
Alcohol - Over indulgence in alcoholic drinks
Physical Activity - Obesity due to physical inactivity and lethargy
Environmental Risk Factors

Go for Cancer Screening

Detecting the cancer in precancerous stage or in its early stages can lead to a much better prognosis of the disease due to effective treatment and management.
There are various kinds of screening tests.

Physical exam and history:
A visual examination of the whole body to check general health and disease, like any new growth or lumps. A medical history of patient’s present health status, past illnesses and treatments will also be noted.

Laboratory screening tests:
Samples of urine, tissue or other substances in the body are taken; like Pap smear for cervical cancer, a biopsy from an abnormal growth or stool test for occult blood in colon cancers.
Diagnostic procedures
Sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy for colon cancer

Imaging procedures:
Screening procedures that take pictures of inside of the body like ultrasound, X-ray, CT scan or MRI.

Genetic tests:
Tests that look for gene mutations (changes) that could be linked to certain cancer. It is also known as gene testing or genome testing.

Explore Cancer Chemoprevention

Cancer chemoprevention is the use of natural or synthetic substances to reverse, suppress or prevent the development of cancer at the first place.
It is used by people who are at a higher risk of developing cancer, have a family history of cancer or those with a previous cancer.
Chemoprevention is not used to treat cancer but can lower the risk of cancer or slows down its development

I'm a 19 year old girl. I'm diagnosed with Fibroadenoma in my right breast. The size is 54*46 mm. I'm using homeopathy medicines since 4 months and the doctor is saying that the lump will be dissolved in another few months. For second opinion I consulted another doctor who said Surgery is the better option. Should I just wait for few more months or get the surgery done. I personally want to get rid of the lump.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Fibroadenoma of the breast, although benign, does increase the chances of breast cancer. Its important that the conditioned be monitored, through regular breast exams, to ensure that it is not growing. Should it be growing still, its advisable to get this removed surgically. Nevertheless, I would advise that you get this clinically evaluated by your OB/ GYN, discuss pros & cons and proceed as recommended by your OB/ GYN. Simultaneously, do follow a streamlined and balanced diet (preferably Mediterranean) & regular lifestyle with due emphasis on regular exercise, stress reduction and relaxation. Consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Especially, vegetables & fruits rich in carotenoids, vitamin C & vitamin B12 are known to help in this condition. Also, apples, broccoli, and cabbage contain glucaric acid which is closely similar to calcium D-glucarate that helps clearing out toxins and excess hormones out of the body that is likely to increase the risk of hormone dependent growths like fibroadenomas and also cancers of the breast. Try avoiding tea, coffee, carbonated soft drinks, dairy products including chocolates, alcohol, greasy, sugary and other high calorie food stuff including fast foods etc all. Green tea is an exception though. Stay well hydrated and have at least 8 - 10 glasses of clear fluids through out the day. Hope this helps. Take care and all the very best. Sincerely

If it is operable, go for surgery first. Depending on the postoperative pathology report further treatment will be decided. If it is inoperable, but nonmetastatic, then go for concomitant chemoradiotherapy first. This will be followed by surgery.

Please try offering semi-solid food. Breast milk alone is unable to meet baby's requirement as the baby grows. Not offering breast if your baby bites will be a negative reinforcement and she will stop biting you while feeding.

I am 33 years old. Currently I am suffering from a breast cancer. I don't have child since last 4 years of marriage. I had taken treatment for it but failed. I have question that after recovering from cancer, Will I be able to take treatment for fertility.

As you don't have a child, there is a option of ovum preservation before starting chemotherapy. Many women experience menopause after chemotherapy, most of them start their normal menstrual cycle within 2 years and can have normal babies. Some might have permanent menopause. Recently there are some drugs given during chemotherapy which may reduce the effects of chemotherapy on ovaries and increase chances of pregnancy later on. Please consult Radiation oncologist from your city for further information. Hope this information is helpful.

I would advise you to show it to a gastroenterologist. It could be symptoms of something called gastroesophageal reflux disease or a disease called achalasia. The gastroenterologist may do a test called barium swallow or an endoscopy if required.

I have three fully impacted wisdom teeth. But they are not infected. From last 6 months I have jaw, throat, ear, tongue & tooth pains. Meanwhile I suffered from throat infection which was due to Enterobacter clocae. I have also reactive lymphnodes in neck. Can impacted wisdom teeth cause all such symptoms?

Hello lybrate-user, wisdom teeth do cause pain in and around teeth and this pain is often referred to jaw, throat and ear. If these wisdom teeth are always causing discomfort and aren't helpfull in biting or chewing food then I would suggest you to go for an intentional extraction of these teeth. I am sure you'll be much more comfortable after it.

Hi, I appreciate you seeking help. It may be a benign tumor. Nevertheless, to be on a safer side, I would advise you to get this clinically examined by a gynaec oncologist right away and not delay any further. Please note that imaging, either through mammography or mri, followed subsequently by a biopsy is always the gold standard for accurate diagnosis of breast cancer. Do take care and I wish you all the very best.

You had hodgkin lymphoma. The prognosis of this disease is good. Although rare, recurrence can occur. For that reason regular checkup is necessary. After successful treatment, patients are usually followed up every 3 months for initial 2 years and every 6 months for next 3 years. What investigations to be performed during follow up depends on initial extent of disease.
