I have some hearing problem I can hear sound but can't understand what they are telling.

Masters in Audiology And Speech Language Pthology, Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Hi generally we understand hearing in frequencies and hertz. Our day to day activities includes different sounds in which speech is one of the important things we hear. Different sounds are at different frequences. So if we have hearing with in that range of these sounds only then we can hear these particular sounds if not we miss them or sometimes we even miss particpular words or sounds in the spoken speech. You seem to have hearing loss. Consult an audiologist who would assist you with the tests required and may explain you in detail about your hearing.

My 8 years old daughter recently came across from less hearing issue. We have done audiolist test two time in 15 days and found that his hearing capacity is increased from early level. Many learned doctors on this site advice us to go for hearing aids for her betterment. Thanks to all. My further question is, if she do not wear hearing aids will her hearing will lose further? Any treatment in other pathy is useful. I am little reluctant to use hearing aids. She otherwise response normally. Only on some occasion she complaint of less hearing. Please Guide .

It is nice to read that your daughter's hearing capacity has increased. It has to be seen that it has become to optimum level, if so, wait n watch. If it starts deteriorating, go for hearing aid. If hearing is not to optimal level, go for aid. It shall help in mental development n learning which otherwise is hampered.

Hi consult a speech therapist near by you. Go through the complete speech and language evaluation. Then and only your speech therapist can guide you what to do for your baby. If he is suffering from any associated disorder with speech delay (means speech language development is not age appropriate) then go through speech therapy, it will definitely help him.

Dealing With Hearing Loss

Hearing is one of the five senses that you or anyone else relies on for communication and a whole host of other things. Among the five senses, touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight, it is often hearing, which is the most easily affected. You don't have to be a senior citizen to experience hearing loss as it is quite common among younger people as well. This problem is also getting widespread with each passing day.

Before coping with hearing loss, the first job is to detect it
If you have a hunch that you or any of your loved ones is suffering from hearing loss, it is important that you get it diagnosed. Some of the common symptoms of hearing loss will be:

  1. Hearing difficulties while talking to someone over the phone
  2. Straining to hear conversations with family members or friends in household situations
  3. People usually need to repeat what they talk to you with a louder voice
  4. You often hear complaints that you keep the TV too loud.
  5. In crowded situations, such as family gatherings or a restaurant, you have problems listening to people.

Although this condition tends to affect senior citizens, an increasing trend shows younger people i.e. people mostly in their 40 and 50s and even younger than that suffer from this condition.

How to deal with hearing loss?
Some of the options to deal with hearing loss are mentioned below.

  1. Once diagnosed with hearing problems, change your ways of communication: If you or your loved ones have been diagnosed with hearing problems, it is important that both adjust your ways to deal with the problem. Rather than getting angry at the other for not being able to communicate effectively, develop and strategize ways to make communication less problematic and erratic.
  2. Cochlear implants: This is a newer technology, which has gained popularity in the past decade or so. These are directly implanted into the inner ear and are designed to bypass the damaged areas of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. These have become very popular, although, are not a replacement of natural hearing. It is only prescribed for people who have severe hearing loss or are deaf.
  3. Hearing aids: Although selecting a hearing aid is difficult as the patient needs to be comfortable, once selected it is one of the best solutions for the hearing impaired. The functionality of these devices can be extended with the hearing assistive technology or HAT devices that can focus the audio waves depending on the situations and give a more tailored approach for every individual's needs.

Dear, your doctor did best for you because thats the protocol which is followed in sudden hearing loss cases. I would suggest you to visit audiologist and take a hearing aid trial, looking at your age audiologist might give you near invisible hearing aid. Hearing aid will help you in managing your hearing loss along with tinnitus. Let me know if it helps. Thanks.

What are symptoms for hearing loss. How we can protect our ears from hearing loss?

Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)
Audiologist, Delhi
Hi, its a good question. As we all know that prevention is better than cure, so it is your sole responsibility to protect your ear from detrimental effects of certain antibiotics, noise exposure, loud music etc. There are many symptoms of hearing loss including tinnitus, frequent infections, poor blood supply to cochlea, and many more. So try to avoid harmful situations that can create a major effect on your hearing status.

I have 50-60 percent hearing loss in one ear due to a slap. Dr. has prescribed me hearing aid of Rs-17000 which is not affordable for me. I searched online and found it and price start around 500+ so pls tell whether it's functioning /working will be different or it is just the quality of the aids. Pls tells me that should I buy and use it or not.

MASLP
Speech Therapist, Hyderabad
When did the trauma happen to the ear (slap). Are you diagnosed to have conductive deafness or mixed hearing loss. Is your other ear normal? If you are surgically unfit you may consider hearing aid as an option. Economy class BTE hearing aids are affordable and cost below 10000rs. Please seek. A second opinion about management of the condition. Hearing aid is prescribed by an Audiologist who has a degree bachelors or masters in Audiology and license to practice. Hearing aid is not prescribed or fitted by a doctor in medicine. They expertise in medical and or surgical management not Rehabilitation. Online purchase will only cause further damage to you as it cannot be fitted based on individual acoustic requirements. Good luck.

Kindly get your hearing test done asap along with speech audiometry, oaes and impedance audiometry. Non-veg food doesn't affect our hearing nor it help to save hearing but chronic alcoholism does. All the best.
