Asthma - What Triggers it?

DNB (General Medicine), Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD), MBBS
Internal Medicine Specialist, Gurgaon
Asthma - What Triggers it?

Asthma is a condition marked by the swelling and narrowing of the airways thus, producing excess mucus. This triggers coughing, breathing difficulties and wheezing. Asthma can be a minor inconvenience for some, while for others, it can often result in a deadly asthma attack.

Causes
It isn’t definite as to what causes asthma in some and not in others, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors is a probable reason. Factors that trigger asthma is varied, and is subjective. Some common causes of asthma include:

  1. Airborne matters, such as cockroach waste particles, pet dander, mould spores, dust mites or pollen
  2. Respiratory Infections
  3. Physical activity
  4. Cold air
  5. Irritants (such as smoking) and air pollutants
  6. Some medications, such as naproxen, ibuprofen, beta blockers and aspirin
  7. Stress and strong emotions
  8. Preservatives and sulphites added to some beverages and food, such as wine, beer, processed potatoes, dried fruit and shrimp
  9. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (Stomach acids retreat into the throat)

Signs you should look for?
Symptoms of asthma vary a lot, and differ among people. You can have infrequent attacks at times or suffer from the symptoms perpetually. Asthma symptoms and signs include:

  1. Breathing difficulties
  2. Chest pain or tightness
  3. Trouble sleeping due to breathing problems, wheezing or coughing
  4. A wheezing or whistling sound at exhaling
  5. Wheezing or coughing attacks that are aggravated by respiratory virus, such as flu or cold

Complications associated with asthma include:

  1. Symptoms and signs that interfere with recreational activities or school work
  2. Sick days from work or school when asthma flares up
  3. Persistent contractions of the bronchial tube that can lead to problems in breathing
  4. Hospitalisation and visits to the emergency room during critical asthma attacks
  5. Long-term consumption of certain medications to fix severe asthma can cause side effects

Treatment

Long-term control and prevention are the main goals of asthma treatment. Treatment generally applies learning about the things that trigger your asthma, taking necessary steps to dodge them and checking your breathing to ascertain that your regular medications are effectively controlling your asthma. Inhaled corticosteroids, long-acting beta agonists, theophylline are some common long-term treatments to control asthma.
Medicines are prescribed based on your symptoms, age, triggers and what best keeps your asthma regulated. Also, you and your doctor need to work together to come up with a plan to counter your asthma. For example, if you think your symptoms are getting better, consult with your doctor to reduce your medication doses. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pulmonologist and ask a free question.

Dear lybrate user, dust allergy occurs due to the production of histamine in blood. This production of histamine is provoked by the entry of certain foreign substance in our respiratory system through the air we inhale. However if you are suffering from dust allergy from a considerable prolonged time then you should take the following medications:- 1) 5 drops of homoeopathic pyrogen 1000, thrice daily in empty stomach. 2) 30 drops of homoeopathic mother tincture cassia soph q, thrice daily, after meals, in a glass of water.

I am 22 years old and I have problem of allergy from dust, cold.what can i do?

Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian (RD), PGDD, Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S), General Physician
Dietitian/Nutritionist,
Is your dust allergy is severe? dust allergies are caused by many substances like pollen, mites, wood etc. Many lifesyle changes can help: avoid using galichas\carpeting instead go for hardwood or vinyl\ tiles floors. Vacuum upholstered furniture such as sofas. Wood, leather, plaster, or metal furniture is better for dust allergies. Replace drapes with roll-up window shades. If you must have curtains, wash them in hot water each season. Get rid of stuffed animals, stuffed furnitures, soft toys, and other dust collectors. Once you get the allergy then it can be cured by use of certain medications which I may prescribe. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

My father has an asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer for long term?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
My father has an asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer for long term?
Some people with asthma are prescribed a preventer inhaler. They help prevent asthma symptoms by reducing swelling and inflammation in the airways. There are several kinds of preventers. They usually contain a low dose of steroid medicine called corticosteroids. Taking your preventer inhaler regularly, usually twice a day, means you're less likely to have asthma symptoms, or asthma attacks. You should use it even if you're feeling well because the protective effect builds up over time.

Namaskaar lybrate-user. First of all .makarpash or chyavanprash should be strictly avoided in dry cough and asthma. One more thing you do not get asthma due to dry cough. You may have asthma ,which may be causing dry cough. If you have long standing acidity (heartburn and acid regurgitatio ie acidic material coming in mouth) ,it too can cause dry cough. Your joint problem need attention ,your weight is little more and may be you are inactive, think of proper treatment for joints Do not worry about lung damage, all you need is good medicines and Praanaayaam, Start praanaayaam as early as possible.

Hi . Get a skin prick test at an allergy clinic. This will identify all the possible allergens that you are allergic to. Once that is identified you can undergo specific desensitisation or slit immunology therapy by an allergy specialist. Presently this is the only promising cure for allergy.

1.Take 11 guava leaves, 11 black pepper, 1 cup milk and one cup water. Put all of them in pot and boil it well, when it reduced to one cup, drink in empty stomach. Take this daily for at least six months or a year. 2. Boil cumin seeds in water and inhale the steam. It helps dilate the bronchial passage. 3. Take 5 gm of ginger, black pepper, cardamom, clove, cinnamon, turmeric and 30 gm of sugar. Grind the mix to a powder. Take half to one teaspoonful and mix it nicely with honey. Take it twice a day
