If I do not find my inhaler or if the inhaler is empty. How can I stop my asthma attack. Any home remedies which can be used to stop the attack?

MD - Pulmonary Medicine, Diploma in Asthma & Allergy
Allergist/Immunologist, Nagpur
First of all, just ensure that you have an extra inhaler. Because nothing works like the inhalers. If still such situation occurs, steam inhalation and some coffee may help. Don't panic and control your breath. Final line- inhalers are the best, usually no alternative for fast relief. If no relief, don't delay trying home remedies, rush to the nearby hospital.

How Can You Boost Your Immune System?

MD - Microbiology, House Job Certificate ( SKIN & STD) , MBBS
General Physician, Gurgaon
How Can You Boost Your Immune System?

The immune system of the body essentially plays two important roles. Firstly, it protects the body from bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms, thus preventing the onset of infections and diseases. Secondly, it ensures that body cells are functioning properly and are not degenerating. Thus, the immune system of the body is quite effective and is responsible for your overall health.

There are times when the immune system becomes weak and is thus unable to fight foreign organisms invading the body. A direct indication that your immune system is weak is when you catch the seasonal cold or flu. In such a case, you have to take certain steps to give a boost to your immune system, such as-

  1. Live healthy- Living healthy does not only include eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly. Make sure that you get enough sleep on a daily basis and avoid smoking along with consumption of alcohol. It is also essential that you maintain your weight and keep a tab on your blood pressure.

  2. Maintain good hygiene- Hygienic habits such as washing hands before every meal and after using the toilet go a long way when it comes to boosting the immune system.

  3. Reduce sugar intake- As per research, it becomes more difficult for white blood cells to fight bacteria when the sugar level of the body is very high, which is why the immune system gets surpassed, and you are more susceptible to infections.

  4. Consume healthy fats- Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids play an important role in boosting the immune system. These healthy fats help the immune system to make prostaglandins, which effectively destroy germs and viruses that have invaded the body.

  5. Avoid the consumption of toxic food- As far as possible, make sure that you are consuming organic food. This is because food grown on a commercial scale is full of toxic chemicals from the pesticides, insecticides, preservatives and artificial colours added to it. The toxic chemicals have a grave impact on the immune system of the body, which can lead to severe complications in the long run.

Although, you want your immune system to be strong and effective, make sure that it is not highly overactive. A highly overactive immune system can also lead to many health complications, such as the onset of autoimmune conditions. All in all, make sure that you are leading a healthy and balanced lifestyle. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

5 Foods That Supercharge Your Immune System

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
5 Foods That Supercharge Your Immune System

1. Garlic

Garlic is nature’s antibiotic, so it's great to add to your diet when you're feeling not-so-hot. Compounds like allistatin, allicin, garlicin, and ajoene deliver super-strong antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and immune-enhancing benefits. Fresh garlic is best (and large quantities of it!) so add the flavor-maker to your meals. It’s incredible for you, so the garlic breath is worth it!

2. Green tea

Green tea contains polyphenols, potent plant antioxidants, which give it immune-system boosting effects. And, egcg, the active compound in green tea, has been known to fight bacteria and viruses. Matcha is the most nutrient-rich green tea, making an already simple daily booster even easier to get in your system.

3. Coconut oil

Coconut oil has many unique health-promoting benefits. It contains lauric acid, which has been shown to enhance immunity and improve heart and thyroid health. It’s also anti-fungal, antibacterial and antiviral, so making it a staple in your diet is a smart idea if you want to feel your best. And, don’t be concerned about the fat — the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil are converted to energy quickly in the body, as opposed to being stored.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the foods with the highest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is antiviral, anti-fungal, and can help protect against cancer. Inflammation is linked to many chronic diseases, so turmeric is a must. Up your body's absorption significantly by mixing turmeric with black pepper.

5. Fermented foods

If you want to boost your immune system in a major way, adding fermented foods, like sauerkraut and kimchi, is important. Fermented foods contain healthy, friendly bacteria that help to balance your gut flora — this is where 70% of your immune system is housed! it's crucial to keep everything in working order down there.

If you’re looking for immune-boosting supplements, 3 of my top picks are probiotics, vitamin D and glutathione. But, when it comes to easy — and delicious — everyday improvements, healthy food is really where it's at.
