Tonsillectomy - When Should You Go For It?

MBBS, MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Tonsillectomy - When Should You Go For It?

The tonsils are soft tissue masses which are located at the back of your throat, usually at the pharynx. The tonsils are masses which are part of the lymphatic system that helps fight infections. However, tonsils can themselves become inflamed and cause a lot of pain. Tonsillectomy is a procedure to remove the tonsils and relieve pain.

Why is tonsillectomy performed?
A few decades back, tonsillectomy was a routine surgery performed to relieve any pain within the tonsils. This method of treatment however has changed over the past few decades as pain medications for inflammation have improved vastly. However, tonsillitis is still performed in many cases wherein it tends to cause acute problems. Some of the cases it is applicable in are:

  1. Chronic bad breath problems caused by recurrent inflammation of the tonsils
  2. Recurrent sore throats caused by tonsillitis
  3. It is also done along with dental surgery for correcting teeth with imperfect positioning
  4. Abscess formation in the mouth
  5. Upper airway being obstructed due to inflammation, thus causing difficulty with sleeping, snoring, or causing sleep apnea (irregular breathing during sleep)
  6. Ear infections being regularly caused by inflammation of the tonsils

Other reasons why it may be recommended
Tonsillectomy may be also be recommended when there are no indications of problems but tonsillitis and other infections keep cropping up too regularly. This affects children and can make them sick or keep them in pain regularly. Some of these other indications are mentioned below:

  1. Tonsil infections and inflammations happening too frequently within a year
  2. Tonsillitis is caused by bacterial infection wherein the antibiotics aren’t effective
  3. Formation of pus in the form of an abscess within or around the tonsils which keep forming even after repeated drainage or administering antibiotics

Possible complications and risks
Like any other form of surgery, tonsillectomy has certain risks associated with it as well. However, these are very rare. Some of these risks and complications are mentioned as follows –

  1. Swelling of the mouth: The tongue and the soft palate or the roof of the mouth may swell, resulting in breathing difficulties an few hours after the surgery.
  2. Infection: As is the case with any surgery, infections may occur in rare cases, which may require further treatment.
  3. Adverse reactions to anesthetics: Many patients exhibit an adverse reaction to anesthetics and may develop symptoms such as a headache, nausea, muscle soreness and frequent vomiting.
  4. Bleeding during surgery or healing: Although it is rare, bleeding during and after surgery has been reported after all sorts of procedures and it may occur with tonsillectomy as well. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ENT specialist.

Dear Lybrate user. Anal sex is definitely safe. But you must also remember that anus hole is more tighter than vaginal entrance. You and your partner could feel the pain. Moreover, your partner will never have any pleasure at all. Take care.

How Does Managing Diabetes Help Your Kidneys?

How Does Managing Diabetes Help Your Kidneys?

Kidneys and Kidney Diseases

The kidneys are organs which aim to filter out huge amounts of blood to produce 1-2 quarts of urine. They also perform the task of filtering out the excessive waste materials from the blood stream.

However, there can be cases when infection enters your bloodstream and affects your kidneys. This can cause serious kidney diseases such as cysts, stones and cancer.

Diabetes: What is it and how does it affect your kidneys?

Diabetes is a condition which is caused when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (Type 1 Diabetes) or when your body doesn’t react to the insulin in a normal way (Type 2 Diabetes). The sugar in your food cannot be broken down effectively which can result in problems in your kidneys.

The glucose content in your blood causes considerable damage to the filters in your kidneys. When the filters in the kidney are damaged, a particular protein called albumin releases into your blood and your urine. The damage in the kidneys can affect the kidney function and obstruct the filtering out of wastes from the blood.

Thus, diabetes could be attributed as a major cause of kidney disease.

Managing Diabetes-

Managing diabetes is crucial to avoid kidney diseases. However, diabetes doesn’t have a proper cure which is why it is even more important to take care of your health in such cases.

Here are a few ways in which diabetic patients can aim to be healthy and prevent kidney diseases:

  1. Quit Smoking: Smoking increases diabetic complications such as nerve damage and heart strokes which can in-turn affect your kidneys’ functions adversely. Hence, it is advisable to quit smoking to keep diabetes under control.

  2. Healthy Meals: Opt for healthy meals which are balanced and packed with nutrients as they help in increasing the insulin function in your body. Foods such as green leafy vegetables, legumes, fruits and lean meat should be included in your meals.

  3. Engage in Physical Exercise: A diabetic person needs to engage in physical exercise in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Obesity can increase your chances of complications and can be detrimental to your kidneys as well. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

As your MCV is low which means that average volume of RBC is less in your blood and Heamoglobin is normal which means that oxygen is properly transported from the RBC to body tissues and As RBC is less hence we should rule out whether you are suffering from genetic disease of thalassemia but before that also get a cbc report done from a different lab and we can compare the two

Hello I just want to know if there is any cons of masturbation, because now days I am more into it and I am worrying if this can effect to my coming life.

Hello
I just want to know if there is any cons of masturbation, because now days I am more into it and I am worrying ...
Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Masturbation is normal, natural and never unhealthy. Even animals do masturbate. As a human being, you are also an animal. Every animal has sexual instinct because they are designed to reproduce. Human being also has sexual instinct and therefore he needs to satisfy sexual instinct. Therefore, to satisfy sexual instinct, a man or woman, masturbates. In any case, masturbation is never unhealthy or will never affect your physical or sexual health or it cannot affect your future sex life and the ability to have children. Masturbation cannot affect your growth or cause pimples or cause hair fall or cause shrinkage of penis or loss of vital nutrients etc. You should try to reduce the masturbation frequency to thrice a week and continue masturbation. You can be sure; there are no side effects to masturbation if you are able to restrict it to thrice a week. Jogging and physical exercise are always good to keep you fit and stop worrying about sex and allied thinking. I suggest online sex counseling and therapy. Take care.

I am suffering from a lot of running in water in nose and cold and cough again and again.
Hello, Cold usually happens to weather/ season change/ exposure to particular allergen. If you have symptoms like sneezing, running nose, blocked nose, headache, may be mild fever, please follow - 1. Adequate rest, proper sleep, and healthy diet is the key treatment to cold/ coryza. 2. Drink lots of fluids and eat homemade food. 3. Drink hot beverages (tea/ coffee) to relieve nasal congestion. 4. Take steam inhalation carefully by steam inhaler twice a day for 2-3 days 5. Blow Your Nose to sniff mucus out. 6. Take steamy shower. Steamy showers moisturize your nasal passages and relax you. 7. If you have sore throat, do warm saline gargles 2-3 times a day till relief of symptoms. 8. Sleep with an Extra Pillow Under Your Head. This will help with the drainage of nasal passages. 9. Take Tablet Levocetrizine 5 mg tablet once daily after food for 3 days, 10. In case of associated headache, bodyache, mild fever, or sore throat, instead of Levocetrizine, take Tablet Sinarest one tablet 3 times daily after food for 3 days. Consult again if symptoms persist or worsen. ***Get Well Soon*** “Food is the best ever medicine, we have, so do not forget to eat homemade breakfast, make it a habit.”

Hello Doctor, Can I drink cold (not too much cold) pasteurised milk? What are the pros and cons of this? Thank you.

Hello Doctor, Can I drink cold (not too much cold) pasteurised milk? What are the pros and cons of this? Thank you.
Cold pasteurised milk does no harm. You can drink it. Actually warm milk is heavy and takes time to digest. but people boil the milk to kill its bacterias in it. If the milk is pasteurized then there is no harm in drinking it, only if you are not sensitive to cold things.
